WordPress is one of the most widely used open-source content management systems for blogs and websites. The reason for this is due to its out of the box simplicity, usability and variety of plugins that can make a webmaster's life a whole lot easier. Need to enhance your SEO presence, try using the "All in One SEO Pack" plugin. Are you looking to add an ecommerce shopping cart to your site? There's a plugin for that too. The Formic team will walk you through the WordPress interface to show off its value and appeal, recommend specific plugins, review how to install it, and of course go over what you can actually do within it, plus much more.

So you want to launch a podcast...
That’s what I thought to myself back in 2019 when I launched WPCoffeeTalk. I learned by doing. (Which means I learned by making a LOT of mistakes.)
Since then I’ve launched a few more podcasts, guested on even more, and co-host a few, too.
Launching a podcast is amazing, but there’s a lot you need to take into consideration, and a lot of questions to ask yourself when you get started.
Learn what to do (and what not to do) when you decide it’s time to start podcasting!
Networking, Relationship Building, and CommunityMichelle Ames
Very few people enter a community for the first time with a network already in place and relationships already established. We all started somewhere as a relative unknown. But if you set a strategic course for networking, building relationships, and participating in (and even building your own) community, then establishing your place in the ecosystem is attainable.
Accessibility is More Than Disability AccommodationMichelle Ames
For WordPress and the WordPress ecosystem to be truly accessible, it has to be available to everyone. When we talk about accessibility, we do mean accessible to those with disabilities (and we often focus on screen readers, etc.). But what if I told you that people in the BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Neurodivergent, and even older communities (like me), often find the way to success paved with roadblock after roadblock? And just like the tales of our parents "it's uphill both ways."
This talk will bring forth the struggles that people in our community experience in finding success, as well as ways we can all be advocates for one another, and make room at the table for all.
How to Focus on Customer Success to Grow Your AgencyMichelle Ames
Your Customers’ Success = Your Success
When an agency focuses on a client’s success, their energies and attentions fine tune beyond what “works” and instead turn to what “helps.”
And you know what happens when your customers succeed? You do, too.
How to help your Non-Profit (or Non-Profit clients) connect better with donorsMichelle Ames
There are hundreds of thousands of non-profits in the world, and a huge portion of them use WordPress. How do you make one stand out more than the others when they all compete for donor dollars?
The Care and Feeding of the WordPress CommunityMichelle Ames
The WordPress community is comprised of people and their relationships with one another and the open source CMS itself. Combined we are a global neighborhood, complete with volunteers, freelancers, employees, a marketplace, and a multitude of opportunities; opportunities for relationships, working, learning, teaching, sharing, volunteering, and more.
At its foundation, its most fundamental part, this neighborhood is built by every individual member. We are each an integral part of this growing, morphing phenomenon, so it is up to us to ensure that it is a robust living organism.
How do we do that?
*For Myself: by making sure I stay healthy both physically and emotionally
*For You: by checking in on my friends and coworkers to help where needed
*For Us: by contributing to the community in thoughtful and deliberate ways
This talk shares ideas to keep us all healthy, learning, and flourishing, for the betterment of ourselves, each other, and the WordPress neighborhood.
Attendees can expect to learn more about the social power of WordPress, how the WordPress community functions, and how giving back is really a way to give to yourself.
So you can build a technically wonderful website, but does it appeal to your audience? Does it have finesse?
Who is it designed for: the owner, the designer/developer, or the customer/user? Are forms user-friendly?
This talk will show you the things that make a website more complete, user-friendly, and user-appealing. Topics will include favicons, custom 404 pages, form buttons, footers, colors, SSL certificates, and more.

5. Basic Installation
Where to get started
Choose a theme. Upload it.
Free vs. Premium
Updates
Less recognizable
Documentation (usually)
Support and forums
Get rid of footer links
Often easily customized
Customize it.
Logo, colors, background images.
Tip/Hack
Changing your theme won’t delete your content (media,
posts, and pages) but most likely WILL delete any
customization – so if you revert back to an older theme you
will have to re-enter customizations.

6. Basic Installation
Where to get started
Choose your plugins and upload them.
Some of my “must haves” include:
Security (BruteProtect, WordFence)
Spam Control (Disable Comments)
Widget Solutions (Jetpack)
Backup (Backup Buddy, WPClone)
Forms (Gravity Forms, Jotform)
Calendar (Timely)
SEO (Yoast)
Post Expirator

(woo commerce, Ecwid, shopify)
Tip/Hack
Logged into your wordpress.org account? Favorite the
plugins you use frequently for easy uploading from the
repository.

7. Basic Installation
Posts
Where posts appear on the site is theme-dependent
Categories vs. Tags
Scheduling
Expiration (plugin required)
Featured Image
Tip/Hack
If you are using a slider, make sure your featured image
matches the slider dimensions.
MarketedByMichelle.com
8. Basic Installation
Media
Photos
Graphics
Pdf files
Etc.
Keep in mind the file size you are uploading. Larger files will also
take a longer time to display.
Tip/Hack
Don’t want any media to link to the file?
Put this in your functions.php file.
update_option('image_default_link_type','none');
MarketedByMichelle.com
9. Basic Installation
Pages – the “meat” of your site.
Choose your template (different with every theme)
Choose a “parent” for hierarchy
Set featured image – if desired
Use headings for both reading and SEO purposes
Use “save draft” to continue working without publishing the page –
or losing edits. Click “view page” to see work in progress
Tip/Hack
Using the “Visual” vs. “Text” views will allow you to access
and edit different aspects of the page.
MarketedByMichelle.com
10. Basic Installation
Comments
Use a spam filter if you invite comments.
Tip/Hack
You can “layer” your spam filters for added effect. I often
install Antispam Bee and Bad Behavior on blogging sites to
control spam.
MarketedByMichelle.com
11. Appearance
Themes
Delete anything you are not using or will not use.
Customize will have different options based on the theme.
Background may or may not display as you intend – based
on the theme.
Tip/Hack
Never edit theme files directly! Use a child theme or CSS
editor (like the one included with Jetpack) to make CSS
edits.

12. Appearance
Widgets
Widgets area also varies based on themes, but most have
similar functions. Variations may include WHERE widgets can
be placed (i.e. footer, sidebar, header, etc.)
Standard widgets include text boxes, meta functions,
calendar of posts, categories, menus, etc.
Plugins can often provide additional widget options like
Facebook “like” boxes, Twitter feeds, and even industry-
specific options like real estate MLS lookups.
Tip/Hack
The Text Widget allows you to use basic HTML language to
add content, links, graphics, etc. This can really come in
handy!
MarketedByMichelle.com
13. Appearance
Menus
Menus are much more versatile than you may think!
Establish link hierarchy through dropdowns
Add links to outside pages in your menu
Customize labels – change the menu name without changing
the target page or link name
Add blog categories as their own menu items
Tip/Hack
Want a menu link to open in a new tab? Click the “Screen
Options” tab at the top of the menu dashboard and check
“link target.” Now when you edit a menu item you can
check “open in new window/tab.”

14. Users
User Roles
Administrator – somebody who has access to all the administration
features within a single site.
Editor – somebody who can publish and manage posts including the
posts of other users.
Author – somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
Contributor – somebody who can write and manage their own posts
but cannot publish them.
Subscriber – somebody who can only manage their profile.
Tip/Hack
Be very cautious about assigning administrator rights to
anyone. They will have access to make ANY changes on your
site.
MarketedByMichelle.com
15. Settings
What to Change
General Settings
Site Title
Tagline
Timezone
Date Format
Week Starts On
Tip/Hack
Be careful not to change your WP or Site addresses unless
you are confident of what you are doing. You can make your
site “disappear.” You have to know how to navigate the
Cpanel well to fix it.
MarketedByMichelle.com
16. Settings
What to Change
Permalinks
Permalinks will default to unfriendly URL page names (like
sitename.com/?p=123)
Instead click the “Post Name” setting to have your page names
appear in the URL bar. (like www.sitename.com/pagename)
Tip/Hack
Using Post Names as the URL page name also assists with
SEO!
MarketedByMichelle.com
17. Must-Haves
Favicon
A favicon is that tiny 16x16 pixel image that displays in the
tab of your browser page and is unique to your site. Without
one all you will see is this.
To create a great favicon, go to favicon.cc and upload and
edit the image.
Some themes let you upload a file directly.
You may need to FTP the file
to your theme’s image folder.
Tip/Hack
A favicon is the cherry on your website sundae! It’s good for
branding, too!
