A month or so ago, Talent Lab reached out and asked if I'd be interested in speaking at their upcoming event, The Gathering. I was initially caught off guard by the ask (what? me? really?), but beyond honoured - and really, how could I say no?
After saying HELL YES, I spent a few days brainstorming what I could speak about. It initially felt like a challenge to figure out what "I" (HR lady by day, not a Recruiter!) could speak to a brilliant group of talent acquisition professionals about... but then... it hit me.

So you want to launch a podcast...
That’s what I thought to myself back in 2019 when I launched WPCoffeeTalk. I learned by doing. (Which means I learned by making a LOT of mistakes.)
Since then I’ve launched a few more podcasts, guested on even more, and co-host a few, too.
Launching a podcast is amazing, but there’s a lot you need to take into consideration, and a lot of questions to ask yourself when you get started.
Learn what to do (and what not to do) when you decide it’s time to start podcasting!
Networking, Relationship Building, and CommunityMichelle Ames
Very few people enter a community for the first time with a network already in place and relationships already established. We all started somewhere as a relative unknown. But if you set a strategic course for networking, building relationships, and participating in (and even building your own) community, then establishing your place in the ecosystem is attainable.
Accessibility is More Than Disability AccommodationMichelle Ames
For WordPress and the WordPress ecosystem to be truly accessible, it has to be available to everyone. When we talk about accessibility, we do mean accessible to those with disabilities (and we often focus on screen readers, etc.). But what if I told you that people in the BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Neurodivergent, and even older communities (like me), often find the way to success paved with roadblock after roadblock? And just like the tales of our parents "it's uphill both ways."
This talk will bring forth the struggles that people in our community experience in finding success, as well as ways we can all be advocates for one another, and make room at the table for all.

How to Focus on Customer Success to Grow Your AgencyMichelle Ames
Your Customers’ Success = Your Success
When an agency focuses on a client’s success, their energies and attentions fine tune beyond what “works” and instead turn to what “helps.”
And you know what happens when your customers succeed? You do, too.
How to help your Non-Profit (or Non-Profit clients) connect better with donorsMichelle Ames
There are hundreds of thousands of non-profits in the world, and a huge portion of them use WordPress. How do you make one stand out more than the others when they all compete for donor dollars?
The Care and Feeding of the WordPress CommunityMichelle Ames
The WordPress community is comprised of people and their relationships with one another and the open source CMS itself. Combined we are a global neighborhood, complete with volunteers, freelancers, employees, a marketplace, and a multitude of opportunities; opportunities for relationships, working, learning, teaching, sharing, volunteering, and more.
At its foundation, its most fundamental part, this neighborhood is built by every individual member. We are each an integral part of this growing, morphing phenomenon, so it is up to us to ensure that it is a robust living organism.
How do we do that?
*For Myself: by making sure I stay healthy both physically and emotionally
*For You: by checking in on my friends and coworkers to help where needed
*For Us: by contributing to the community in thoughtful and deliberate ways
This talk shares ideas to keep us all healthy, learning, and flourishing, for the betterment of ourselves, each other, and the WordPress neighborhood.
Attendees can expect to learn more about the social power of WordPress, how the WordPress community functions, and how giving back is really a way to give to yourself.

realize you left something behind…
If you’ve ever been caught snooping in someone’s

5. Then you know what it feels like to experience a 404
page.
@michelleames
@wpcoffeetalk
It feels cut off.
Disconnected.
Like we stepped into the “do not walk on the grass” area.
@404playcom
6. A 404 page is not where you
intended to be, it feels
embarrassing, and sometimes
you’re not sure how to figure
out where to go next.
@michelleames
@wpcoffeetalk
@404playcom
7. A well-designed 404 page feels like discovering an
Easter egg or buried treasure.
A good 404 page uses creativity, is fun to do, and
creates a unique user experience for any site visitor
who ends up there.

20. What should you include?
•Something relevant
•Something appropriate
•Something helpful
@michelleames
@wpcoffeetalk
Make your visitor feel special.
@404playcom
21. It Takes a Little Finesse
•What is the site’s topic
or business?
•What is the site’s
purpose?
•What is the tone of the
rest of the site?
@michelleames
@wpcoffeetalk
The 404 page should stay on brand.
@404playcom
22. Step 1. Make sure you don’t stray too far from
your purpose.
Keep it relevant.
●Is it a restaurant? Please don’t show animals.
●Is it a funeral home? Don’t make jokes.
●Is it a political fundraiser? Don’t malign the competition.
Match the site’s tone.
●A salon that is super exclusive and expensive should have a
404 that is also in that tone. A page with purple and orange
hair might not work.
●A children’s toy website shouldn’t have a serious or scary page.
@michelleames
@wpcoffeetalk

23. Step 2. Brainstorm ideas that could work
• Funny
• Cute
• Clever
• Serious
• Stylish
• Surprising
• Somber

24. Step 3. Design your page
Use open source images/video or create your own
