Why Toastmasters and How it Helps Your Daily Job

Editor's Notes

  • #6 ESL Spoken okay; written - bad why TM? Yes That was one of the first best speaker award I got from cupertino morning toastmasters. I started with a lot of 20+ hmms ahs, and off talent in Table Topic, and forgot my speeches half way through, and froze when the red light shows up to tell me that I ran out of time.
  • #7 Six years in TM later, I'm on film being interviewed as a partner, customer, on stage with silico valley CXO to talk about WIT, articulating value props on live TV. Every thing I learned in TM added trenmously value
  • #8 TMOD. IT taught me how to This WIT event, everyone was so loud in there, and I had to get in front and manage the room - that was nerveranking
  • #9 first time interviewing startups competition winner. Thanks to evaluator roles at TM, I empasize with speakers, listen to what they said and recurgitate what they say into something actionable. I even got recognition from our CEO that I did a great job
  • #10 Being on a panel was the hardest thing - but table topics helped me so much, I learned to answer in a concise, structured way, and in a humours maner too! This was in front of 500 people. I decided to bring up a sensitive topic on IVF benefits because of a research topic I did for TM. One of the members actually came up to me in tears thanking me for bringing visibility to that.
  • #11 Prepared speeches - show up confidently; speak on demand; every time with key message; action orieted. WHen I did the talks in Canada - 4 talks in a week. Every talk was different, because I knew the audience is different. One cared more about government related projects, the other more on oil and gas, and next one more on media and entertainment
  • #18 Speeches – schedule it, track it Contest – say yes, work it! Sleep - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tJ9Vcd-cGdNEwgwfAwZ2rz2KdWlgQcUrwVA-4882B0I/edit#gid=0 https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/18/my-international-speech-contest-journey/ Speeches: https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/08/reflect-on-my-path/
  • #19 Schedule it. Track it. Reward yourself https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tJ9Vcd-cGdNEwgwfAwZ2rz2KdWlgQcUrwVA-4882B0I/edit#gid=0 reward - sunshine folder; glass of wine; hang out with friends; massage
  • #20 Contest – say yes, work it! https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/18/my-international-speech-contest-journey/
  • #21 Contest – say yes, work it! https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/18/my-international-speech-contest-journey/ VP stood on stage and froze; heard that happy hour went VERY late - it's a story you don't want to repeat
  • #22 https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/25/effective-follower-leaders/ https://womenleadtm.com/2021/05/05/personalized-communication-meeting-recap/ https://womenleadtm.com/2021/04/04/lead-in-any-situation/ efficient, clear, and individualized.  “Keep it simple, stupid.”  S1 – telling  S2 – selling  S3 – participating  S4 – delegating
  • #23 Give Yourself Time – You don’t need to finish 10 speeches in a year. 5 is okay Adopt to changing expectation -- if your speech didn’t go so well, all good. Write down what you can fix and go to the next speech Don’t judge yourself harshly – think of yourself as an explorer in life, try new things. If it doesn’t work, all good! Try something else. Manage others expectation Communicate clearly - No one knows how to make you happy if they don’t know what makes you happy. If you have a mentor, ask clearly what you’d like to get out of it. If you have a few people that are going to be on the panel for you to moderate, list clearly the commitment to participate Predict Others’ Expectations - Everyone comes to a situation with biases and preconceptions. Ask clarifying questions – do you want me to be the kind of mentor weekly, monthly? Prepare for Problems – do you have a checklist for virtual game plan? > see next slide
  • #24 The one I keep forgetting is : Tell the family the office is a "no fly zone." Breathe. Smile. Relax. Focus on connection, not perfection. ... the good, the bad ... it's all a privilege.

  • #28 This is the time to perfect my thinking and word choices before it’s too late. There – that’s my true why. After going through this exercise a few times, you can quickly get to the answer deep down. Then you’d stop kidding yourself and put in the hard work.  https://womenleadtm.com/2021/01/02/top-5-books-of-the-40-that-ive-read-in-2020/ ... the good, the bad ... Living is all a privilege. Why? Improve public speaking Why? Articulate Why? People can understand me Why? I can drive change Why? Driving change is _____ to you. Power? Value? Significance?
