Hospital-acquired pneumonia, also known as nosocomial pneumonia, refers to pneumonia contracted within 48-72 hours of hospitalization and is commonly caused by bacterial infections. It is easy for hospital patients to develop this type of pneumonia because they are generally ill with weakened immune systems. Certain patients are at higher risk, such as those over 70, having prior antibiotic treatments, or using ventilators. Hospital-acquired pneumonia can be difficult to treat due to the variety of bacteria that may cause it, and physicians may perform bronchoscopy to determine the specific bacteria to select the proper antibiotic treatment.

There are a lot of illnesses that get out of
control in environments such as
hospitals. Diseases like infections and
tuberculosis are easily spread in enclosed
spaces. But among these illnesses,
pneumonia is one of the most common
complications one can get in a hospital,
notes Lisa M. Cannon, M.D.
Hospital-acquired pneumonia refers to a
type of pneumonia that people contract
within 48 – 72 hours of their stay in
hospitals and is commonly spread by
bacterial infection as opposed to the viral
nature of community-acquired
pneumonia.
Medical experts say that it’s easy for hospital patients to get this type of pneumonia
because they are generally in an ill state, as well as their weakened immune system.
And because of this, pneumonia has become a common cause of death in intensive
care units among nosocomial infections. It can also prolong a patient’s hospital stay
by as much as two weeks.
While not all patients are at risk of
getting hospital-acquired pneumonia,
some are at a higher risk of contracting
it. These include people over 70, people
who’ve had previous antibiotic
treatments, patients who’ve had

2. abdominal or chest surgery, and people
using ventilators.
What makes hospital-acquired
pneumonia difficult to treat is the
variety of bacteria that causes it.
According to Dr. Lisa M. Cannon,
physicians may go as far as doing a
bronchoscopy to obtain a sample of the
specimen to treat pneumonia faster.
