How To Tell If You
Have Sleep Apnea
It is estimated that around 12 percent of the American population suffers from
sleep apnea (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-
topics/topics/sleepapnea/diagnosis) , which is when a person’s throat becomes
blocked for a few seconds while sleeping. The constricted throat muscles prevent
a person from breathing, significantly reducing the quality of sleep and impacting
overall health. Those with sleep apnea often have other related conditions such as
Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other cardiovascular disorders. Fortunately,
the condition can be treated effectively if immediately diagnosed.
Individuals should look for the following signs to see whether they may or may not
have this sleeping disorder. Any of the following conditions should be reported to
one’s physician.

Snoring: Loud, persistent snoring is a common side effect of sleep apnea.
However, just because one snores, this does not necessarily mean that one has
sleep apnea. There are other causes for snoring. That said, there is an increased
potential of developing sleep apnea if one snores. Patients should keep track of
their snoring habits, or ask their partner to describe it.
Pauses in breathing followed by gasping: It is usual for patients to wake
themselves up because they forgot to breathe. This follows an episode of
constricted throat muscles. Partners will also notice a sharp intake of breath as
someone tries to balance breathing patterns.

Excessive sleepiness during daytime: Because the quality of sleep is affected,
patients with sleep apnea are not fully alert during waking hours. They will find
themselves incredibly sleepy and unfocused during the day and may have
problems going to sleep.
If a person has all of these symptoms, he or she should immediately consult with
their medical expert.
Dr. Lisa Marie Cannon (https://plus.google.com/104772313489569127625/posts) ’s
area of specialization is pulmonary medicine, including conditions affecting sleep.
