Know the Signs:
Tuberculosis in
Children
Tubercolosis or TB is mostly known as an adult disease, but young
children can acquire it, too. The warning signs for children with TB
may not be as clear as how adults find out they have it.
Children get the disease when they breathe the droplets a person
infected with TB released into the air through sneezing and
coughing. Children aged 2 to 13 are more susceptible to
contracting the virus, if they are exposed to a person with TB.

When children are infected, they often show no symptoms.
Eventually, they will, at one point, display these signs: persistent
coughing, fatigue, loss of weight and appetite, swollen glands,
fever, sweating at night, and irritability.
Tuberculosis without symptoms needs a long course of treatment.
Children will have to take isoniazid, or INH, an oral drug used to
treat adult tuberculosis, daily for nine months. Children with active
tuberculosis will also have to take two or more antibiotics for six to
18 months, depending on the child’s progress.

Children should not be given ethambutol, another TB drug for
adults, because it can harm their eyesight.
Because TB is hard to spot, it is important for parents and primary
caretakers to carefully monitor the child’s condition. It is also vital
to always have your children tested for TB if he or she comes in
contact with anyone diagnosed with the disease.
