Knowing that, it should not surprise anyone that increasing numbers of agencies are prioritizing IT modernization to maximize budgets. Keeping the movement toward modernization in mind, in this webinar I’m shedding light on key specs and advantages of the latest Dell servers from a federal government perspective. Amber Transition Sounds like a good topic, Rico. What does Dell’s 13th generation bring to the table in terms of key specs for servers?
- Let’s start with CPUs and RAM. The CPU Family is E5-2600 v4 These processors cause a 20 to 30% performance increase due to the combination of high processor frequency and high core count.
- 13th gens take DDR4 memory. DDR4 has 4 channels, better performance, and higher speed to match the E5-2600 CPUs. The doubled bandwidth, reduced voltage, and dramatically lower power consumption, improves performance and optimizes the total cost of ownership (TCO). Amber Transition Those are some impressive performance increases. What do the latest Dell servers offer in terms of storage?
- Sure, Amber. 13th gen servers also have better storage performance. They’re equipped with PCIe 3.0 and 12Gb/s Controllers Much of the credit for the improved performance should go to the PERC controllers. Dell offers the H330, H730 and H730P. The latter two models double the cache size, and all three are capable of pass-through operations.
- Now for those who don’t want a RAID stack in the way, they can pass through to a software-defined storage environment, as might be implemented through VMware or Hyper-V.
- Lastly, it should be noted the R730XD is the storage flagship of the 13th gen servers It has flexible drive bay configurations including SAS, SATA, nearline SAS, SSD, and PCIe SSD. It can be equipped with up to sixteen 3.5” SAS, SATA, nearline SAS, or SSD drives plus two 2.5” HDDs Or up to eighteen 1.8” SAS, SATA, nearline SAS, or SSD drives plus eight 3.5” SAS, SATA, nearline SAS, or SSD drives, and two 2.5” HDDs Or up to twenty-six 2.5” SAS, SATA, nearline SAS, SSD, or PCIe SSD drives. - Well to start with, it’s important to point out the benefits of having a consistent platform brand across all business units, for example Dell networking, Dell end user equipment, and Dell storage and servers. By maintaining a consistent manufacturer, service call procedures are simplified, and government IT professionals, as well as external civilian contractors, reduce the amount of time necessary to evaluate and maintain systems. This results in reduced IT expenditures.
- In terms of specs, it’s important for government users to decrease footprint so the memory capacity in new servers, including 512GB, 768GB, and 1TB+ configurations, provide plenty of compute power for data-intensive operations all in a single server box.
- It's also important to note the ability to mix drive types saves more allocated funding. Mixing larger capacity drives with high speed flash-based storage in a single server provides enhanced performance for certain applications and eliminates the need for users to purchase expensive external storage.
