The document discusses the end of support for SQL Server 2005 and provides guidance on upgrading paths and licensing options. It recommends checking for application compatibility, running an upgrade advisor tool, understanding downgrade rights, and considering whether to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2014 or 2016 based on licensing and compatibility needs. The document is produced by Aventis Systems to provide information and services for upgrading SQL Server databases.

Monitoring advanced Azure PaaS workloads in the enterprise - Level: 200Karl Ots
Presented at TechDays Sweden on 25.10.2017.
Modern applications leverage a variety of services, and often span across onpremises, public cloud, IaaS and PaaS. Monitoring these environments is different from traditional systems. We have more and more data available from the platfrom with the likes of ARM Activity Logs, Azure Monitor, MOMS and Application Insights. With a massive amount of signal and noise being generated in all these systems, how do we get our arms around what is happening? How will I know if my application uptime is impacted? Are my servers handling the load? Are my integrations still running as they should? How many users are impacted by the incident and what is the root cause? Come and hear how to answer these questions as I walk through what actionable monitoring means in Azure applications. We will cover recent updates to the platform and tooling. After the session, you’ll have deeper understanding of end-to-end monitoring techniques in Azure solutions.

Let Data Flow: Removing the Latest DevOps Constraints with DataOpsDelphix
While IT teams have automated many parts of the application development process, managing data has emerged as the latest constraint holding DevOps teams back, suppressing the pace of innovation delivery. Data provisioning, versioning, and aligning database code with application code are still manual processes that impede the flow of high-quality, secure data to teams that need it most. But it does not have to be that way.

In this deck we review the significant licensing changes introduced with SQL 2012. If our experience as Microsoft's Gold Certified Member has taught us anything - it is one thing. During migrations many of our clients get outright lost when trying to figure out the number of licenses they have or need. This often leads to under-deployment, and subsequently serious compliance issues with Microsoft. And yes, in some cases over-deployment means big savings back to your department.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Welcome to, ‘RIP SQL Server 2005 - Time to Move On.’
For today’s webinar we are discussing the upgrade paths and practices for getting away from SQL Server 2005. This is important to discuss now because as of April 12th, 2016 it will no longer be covered under Microsoft’s extended support. This means that there will no longer be any security updates released to fix security risks.
Moderator Interjection
April will be here before we know it! What’s the first tip?
Our first tip is to check with the vendors of the applications that are using SQL to ensure compatibility with later versions before migrating to a newer version.
Nothing would be worse than upgrading and having an incompatible product! This planning will help you save a headache down the road.
Once you have checked compatibility, your next step is to run the SQL upgrade advisor to check the system for any issues that may hinder the upgrade process. Once the advisor comes back clean you are ready to upgrade!
Moderator Interjection
That’s an important first step, Jennifer! What’s next?
Our next tip revolves around deciding which new SQL version for your business to upgrade to.
If you decide to only upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 you will find it nearly impossible to find licensing. This is because microsoft has discontinued their sale of these licenses.
Instead, you will need to purchase newer licensing and take advantage of downgrade rights.
For SQL Server you are allotted downgrade rights for two versions back. This means if you want SQL Server 2008 R2, you can purchase SQL Server 2014 Open Business Licensing to give you compliance with SQL Server 2008 R2 databases.
Likewise, purchasing SQL Server 2016 licensing will give you compliance with SQL 2014 and 2012.
Another important thing to point out is the difference in the SQL licensing methods. While you can still buy licensing based on a server plus user or device CAL model, the processor model has changed.
Instead of one license per processor, you are now buying one license per core regardless of it being a physical or virtual environment. This option is more expensive, but offers unlimited users.
