GMOs are prohibited in organic agriculture due to health and safety concerns. Studies have found that both GM maize and the herbicide Roundup acted as endocrine disrupters, causing female animals to die at much higher rates. The WHO classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as probably carcinogenic to humans. Additional studies found GM corn associated with stomach inflammation in pigs, and GM soy was found to damage rat livers and testicles, causing higher mortality rates and smaller litter sizes in rat offspring.
