The World War I And The Red Scare
In the early 20th Century, the United States endured a time of political unrest. During World War I,
fears of socialism and communism entered the psyche of the United States and culminated in the Red
Scare. Hundreds of American citizens particularly immigrants suffered unprecedented arrests and
deportations (Fariello 4). During this time, Charles Schenck, secretary of the Socialist Party of
America, actively opposed the war. Due to Schenck s efforts, the organization distributed thousands of
leaflets criticizing conscription and encouraging readers to assert rights against the draft and
intimidation (Schenck v. United States 1). In the 1919 case Schenck v. United States, the defendants
were charged with violating the Espionage Act of 1917 by causing and attempting to cause
insubordination in U.S. military forces by distributing a document denouncing the draft in name of the
13th amendment (Schenck 1). When insurgency and fear continued, Congress amended the Espionage
Act with the Sedition Act, which limited many more forms of speech (Fariello 14).
At this point, society had to decide whether these limits on speech aligned with its interests. Holmes
similarly had to consider whether to forfeit his belief that ideals in the Constitution and its
Amendments exist absolutely (Cohen 27). In the end, he decided that a balance between absolute
ideals and the responsibilities of Congress must prevail as the most fair compromise or standard. In
this fairness, the Court affords

Advancements in Women s Rights Over the Past 100 Years Essay
Most cultures and societies through both history, and today have viewed women as the weaker sex .
Often they labeled unfit to perform many jobs outside of child bearing and domestic chores, even
considered less intelligent than men are. In the past, this attitude translated into fewer jobs for women,
below average pay, and poor working conditions.
This continues today, despite the many great advances women have made in the past 100 years. This is
evident in the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) fields, where a man is far more likely to get the
position than a woman is. The rate of males EMTs compared to female EMTs was a ration of 8 1 in
2010. During my research, I came across a website which states,
Female Medics are Deadly! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another reason for job inequality could be the misconception that women are unable to make rational
decisions, because they are emotionally driven. Women are emotional creatures, but their emotions do
not override common sense. Typically, women have to study more, and work harder than a man to
achieve their position of power. According to the Harvard Business Review Women, still face tougher
odds not only getting into, but also staying in the C suite. (CEO). They conducted a study in which
they studied the leadership of the world s top 2000 companies; they found that 29 (1.5%) of those
CEOs were women. The Harvard Business Review also notes the difference between men and women
CEOs and suggests that women still aren t treated as equals to men when it comes to high stakes
positions. Another study by Darden Professor Erica James reported that stock in a company drops
after the announcement of a female CEO, but not after that of a male CEO.
As time went on women continued their struggle to earn their right even today. In some areas around
the world, women are still expected to be those perfect 50 s housewives where they cook, clean, make,
and raise the children. In areas around the world like Israel, women who cannot have children appear
as something useless to society. Their husbands

Genetically Modified Foods
Part 1
Genetically Modified Food
With genetically modified foods I believe we have reached the thin edge of the wedge, we are messing
with the building blocks of life and its scary Malcom Walker, Chairman and Chief Executive of
Iceland Foods (Quotes from Scientists).
Genetically modified organisms or GMOs are plants or animals made by splicing the gene and
inserting DNA from different species of plants, animals, bacteria, and viruses. These genes would not
naturally result in a cross breed. As a result of this biotechnology more than ninety percent of corn,
soybean, cotton, sugar, and canola in the US are genetically modified. Other major GMOs are papaya,
zucchini and yellow squash (Non GMO Project). If not stopped it will be a matter of another few years
that they capitalized the entire food industry. Ironically even now, most of the popular food items of
children like cereal, crackers, cookies, and processed lunch meat are all GMOs.
Is genetically modified food good for consumers? What are its impacts? What are the effect of GMO
on the environment? How do they influence the life of a common farmer and the food industry? Is the
situation really bad? How did we get trapped in this? What steps can be taken to control it? These and
many other questions need to be addressed before it is too late.

was modifying living species. The understanding of the genome led to an

In this research paper I m going to describe about theater production technology which it is using
digital production and how it is saturate to the mise en scene.
Cinematic theater is term of using digital projection in contemporary theatre. That can be briefly
described as a fusion of live performance and the magic of the big screen. By utilizing the best
dramatic devices that each art form has to covey a story and entertain an audience; the possibilities to
create interesting narratives and stage dynamics through the synergy of stage and cinematic design is

Stage design allowing the utilization of projected images on surfaces can create a dynamic canvas on
which to apply vision. The applications are only limited by your imagination and ability to position
the projector. Some examples include: a window space to see outside, a mirror to show symbolic
representations of character, floor space to create a pool of water, smoke, curtains etc.
Lighting design:
It is important when incorporating video into live performance that you consider the effect of lights on
the screen surface. One difficulty in setting lights is that they can significantly degrade the brightness
and colour of the screen images if there is light either directly hitting or bouncing from the floor onto
the screen.
One solution is to set the screen up from the floor and placing some blocks/staging in front to block
some of the bouncing light. When considering colour gels it is imperative to consider colours used in
the screen images and try to match them as well as possible to give a blended effect.
Mise en scène
Mise en scène is a French term and originates in the theater. It means, literally, put in the scene. For
film, it has a broader meaning, and refers to almost everything that goes into the composition of the
shot, including the composition itself: framing, movement of the camera and characters, lighting, set

Mountain Man Brewing
Assignment for Week 9
DESCRIPTION
Chris Prangel, a recent MBA graduate, has returned home to West Virginia to manage the marketing
operations of the Mountain Man Beer Company, a family owned business he stands to inherit in five
years. Mountain Man brews just one beer, Mountain Man Lager, also known as West Virginia s beer
and popular among blue collar workers. Due to changes in beer drinkers taste preferences, the
company is now experiencing declining sales for the first time in its history. In response, Chris wants
to launch Mountain Man Light, a light beer formulation of Mountain Man Lager, in the hope of
attracting younger drinkers to the brand. However, he encounters resistance from senior managers.

MMBC brand. It caters to regional tastes (dark, bitter). MMBC also has class cachet (it s a miner s
beer) it s family owned, it s perceived as being high quality and it s a legacy product. People seem to
drink Mountain Man as a way to connect with past generations of their family. Brand played a critical
role in beer purchasing decision. The promotion of MMBC was done by accentuating its dark color by
packaging it in a brown bottle, with its original 1925 design of a crew of coal miners printed on the
front. Mountain Man Lager was priced similarly to premium domestic brands such as Miller and
Budweiser but below specialty brands such as Sam Adams. MMBC used its own sales force to focus
on off premise locations (liquor stores or supermarkets) with much success. Blue collar males
purchased 60% of the beer they drank at these off premise locations. The decline in MMBC was due
to changes in beer drinkers preferences. This decline was happening across the whole United States to
the traditional premium beer category at an annual rate of 4%.
I believe Mountain Man should introduce a light beer to make up for the loss of sales. The
introduction into the market should be done with soft marketing in the core area that Mountain Man
Lager is the strongest, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. I am recommending

The Demise of a Family in Gail Godwin s A Sorrowful Woman
Gail Godwin s A Sorrowful Woman lt leads one to believe that the wife is overwhelmed or possibly
just having a bad day. The belief is that with her husband s understanding she and her family will get
through this difficult time. Everyone has a bad day and people get aggravated at times. However, a
shocking revelation comes to the reader that this isn t just a bad day. A deeper look into the story
reveals that the wife s selfishness and pity for her life is fueling her sorrow and along with their lack
of communication causes the demise of this family. In reading this story we find a woman tired of

It sounds patronizing of her telling him how to put their child to bed. His understanding of such things
does not detour him from dozing after her good super (35) while she puts the dishes away. His
understanding of such things doesn t seem to enlighten him that maybe his wife is in need of more
help than just his being big enough to contain what ever she must do (38). Him allowing her to stop
seeing their son is just enabling her to isolate herself one step further. He should sit her down and
explain, she can either talk to him about what is wrong or she can talk to a doctor. His passiveness
about the issue allows her to make the decisions when it is clear that she is not capable of making any
decisions. In shutting herself off from others, especially a small child, she is being selfish. She is not
considering what feelings the child might have: rejection, feelings of guilt, self esteem. What have I
done for mommy not to want to see me? What is wrong with me? The isolation and turning away her
child and her husband states that her feelings come before theirs. The mother is usually the one
teaching the children of compassion and respect for other s feelings. How does the child learn these
things if his own mother puts her feelings above his needs for nurturing and love? However, at the end
we believe the husband s understanding has paid off and she is coming back to them. She s done all of
these wonderful things for the man and the child

The Existence of God Essay
The Existence of God
What we call religious experience can differ greatly. Some reports exist of supernatural happenings
that it would be difficult to explain from a rational, scientific point of view. On the other hand, there
also exist the sorts of testimonies that simply seem to convey a feeling or a peace of oneness
something which most of us, religious or not, may possibly relate to.
Firstly, I will consider the nature of an experience. Experience involves encounters which are
empirical (testable via senses). We draw non empirical conclusions about many things and people that
they have orange hair and are 5 feet tall, that they are lonely and confused. These conclusions are
mainly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is known through testimonies of the recipients of these experiences.
In categorising religious experiences is helpful to look at them as explicable through one of two
theories: the objectivist thesis or the subjectivist thesis.
The objectivist view supposes that there is some object or actual entity such as god which exists
independently of the experience, interaction which causes the experience itself. God is described as
numinous. This is a term often used to describe the experience in which God s separateness is
highlighted. This was put forward by Rudolf Otto in his book The Idea of the Holy. Otto religion
sprang from experience of the holly. Because the word numinous has many associations he used
numen, something which is wholly other than the natural world
An objectivist would argue that the religious experience is a proof of God s existence. However,
others have criticised the reliability of religious experiences. The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes
asked how it was possible to tell the differences between talking to God in a dream, and dreaming
about talking to God. The objectivist thesis is ultimately the most traditional viewpoint since it views
God as object that is, something which exists independently of us (such as a table or another person).
However,

Difference Between Absolute and Comparative Advatage
The theory of comparative advantage is perhaps one of the most important concepts in international
trade theory.
A country has an absolute advantage in the production of a good relative to another country if it can
produce the good at lower cost or with higher productivity. Absolute advantage compares industry
productivities across countries. In the case of Zambia, for instance, the country has an absolute
advantage over many countries in the production of copper. This occurs because of the existence of
reserves of copper ore or bauxite. We can see that in terms of the production of goods, there are
obvious gains from specialisation and trade, if Zambia produces copper and exports it to those
countries that specialise in the production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Country B has an absolute disadvantage. Due to abundance of raw materials or more productively
efficient production techniques, Country A is able to produce more wheat and more maize that
Country B. Perhaps common sense tells us that Country A should produce both goods and export
surpluses and Country B neither. However, when comparative advantage is considered a different
story emerges.
Consider the opportunity cost of Country A producing one more unit of maize. Half a unit of wheat
has been foregone. When country B produces one more unit of maize two units of wheat are foregone.
Economics is concerned with the allocation of scarce resources. Fewer resources are foregone if
Country A concentrates its resources in the production of maize.
Now consider the opportunity cost of Country B producing one more unit of wheat. Two units of
maize have been foregone. When Country B produces one more unit of wheat only half a unit of
maize is foregone. Fewer resources are foregone if Country B specialises in the production of wheat.
In the above case Country A should produce maize and Country B wheat. The surpluses produce
should then be traded.
We can see that the principle of comparative advantage is clearly counter intuitive. Many results from
the formal model are contrary to simple logic; in the other hand the logic behind absolute advantage is
quite intuitive.

Media Standard
Today s society is centered on media rather it be broadcasting media, print media, mass media, or
social media. Media is the center of it all. The media is our way of staying up to date on the latest
news, passing and receiving information, basically keeping our lives in motion. The media has the
ability to create social norms. One social norm that rubbed writer/director of the documentary Miss
Representation Jennifer Seibel Newsom the wrong way was the misrepresentation of women in the
media. The main claim or argument behind Miss Representation is that woman now days are being
judged only on their appearance rather then their knowledge, achievement, and or power.

Meaning ten hours a day the media is influencing teenagers. The media has created its own standard of
beauty, so when teenage girls spend ten hours a day focusing on media they see that a vast majority of
them don t live up to media s standard of beauty.
Newsom points this out because in the documentary you see three different clips of three half naked,
beautiful women lying down, washing a window and serving a male food at the breakfast table.
(INSERT CITATION) Newsome suggest those clips right there leads to girls being very insecure
about their looks and bodies which leads to losing confidence in their ability because they believe
their value is solely based on their looks. To capture the attention of the younger audience, Newsom
interviewed teenage girls. One girl talks about the fact that when she was in fifth grade she was
worried about her weight. Now in ninth grade she says she is still worried about her weight.(INSERT
CITATION) Here, Newsom suggested she being concerned about her weight at such a young age is
the influence of media. Another girl says it s all about the body, not about the brain (INSERT TIME

The documentaries argument then targets the medias effect on women in power, specifically women in
politics. One example of how media has affected women in power is shown in a clip with former

Massive Resistance Policy Summary
This primary source analysis will define the historic and civic perspectives of Virginian citizens that
supported desegregation and the Massive Resistance policies of Governor Almond during the 1950s.
The Massive Resistance policy was created by Senator Byrd and Governor Almond to prevent the
segregation of white and black public schools. Brown. V. Board of Education provided a federal
mandate to desegregate black and white schools, which would unify them into a single public school
system. In these documents, John G. Bowman (1959) argues for a historical change in the
desegregation of the school systems, which would remain loyal to great leadership of the Founding

Authority Control
Authority control is a method of controlling and limiting where the object in the catalogue gets
shelved under, and what terminology can be used to search for said objects. There are two types of
authority control for this database and those are name and subject.
Now, name authority control is generally used for large collections, to narrow a search or when there
are too many subject terms to search by. To use name authority, it identifies the object in the collection
by its title, publisher or even the author(s). Name authority allows them to be able to locate objects
with ease, so that they can spend more time on other things. For example, if there is more than one
object with similar titles or authors.
To use subject authority control for paranormal romance is about using terms such as magicks or
mythology to represent where the objects should be shelved or grouped under. The authority control
allows the objects to be found with ease in different sections for them to locate which subgenre or
subject within paranormal romance that is desired. For example, under the authority control (subject)

movement in the United states, but also allowed for Reagan be elected president in the 1980s. Ronald
Reagan became a New Right hero. Reagan publicly supported fewer government regulations, free
market economics and lower taxes. Ronald Reagan s tax cuts would in the end result in a tax
increase.Although supported by the New Right, Reagan more often found himself rejecting the
Christian Right. Regan regularly dismayed them by not pursuing their interests, on topics such as
religious prayer and participation in public schools and the subject of abortion, enough as the
Christian Right had wished. In the early 1980s, Reagan created a massive military buildup in the
United States. Because of the military buildup, the Soviet Union was forced to follow suit. The Soviet
Union however, experienced struggles with keeping up with the U.S. buildup due to its already
struggling economy.

Raymond Carver s Neighbors
Raymond Carver s 1993 book Short Cuts featuring A small good thing and Neighbors, are short stories
that shadows the development of their respective characters into an unpredictable and unattractive
reality through developing themes of connectedness, desperation for hope and unpredictable/difficult
situation. Ann s evolution from A small good thing into comprising an unattractive reality has been
heavily influenced by the loss of her child. She displays the desperation for her son s welfare;
displaying how humans crave a happily ever after whereas in reality, her son died as the story
approached the end; displaying reality to be unpredictable and unattractive. Similarly, Bill s evolution
from Neighbors into comprising an unattractive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This is the moment just after Howard asked Ann to go and have a rest. Using quick and snappy

that aspect, the reality became even more unattractive.
Similarly in Neighbors, Bill and her wife s efforts in making their lives happy, they distanced

Internet Sexual Addiction
Internet Sexual Addiction
It seems that the Internet has become an ever growing part in numerous areas of the everyday lives of
people. One area that is worthy of further study involves sexual addiction and how it is related with
too much use of the Internet. Some scholars allege that sociopaths are starting to emerge online and it
has been dubbed as technological addictions . This article looks at Internet addiction with respect to
excessive sexual behavior. It includes discussions of the notion of addiction to sex and whether the
entire notion is viable. This will be achieved through the assessment of the small quantity of available
empirical data. It also concludes that sex on the Internet is a new form of expression that may ... Show

Then again, there is still the argument regarding the most apt term to describe the condition of
individuals with extreme sexual behavior including sexual addiction (Carnes, 1983), sexual
impulsivity (Barth Kinder, 1987), sexual compulsion (Coleman, 1986), and non paraphilia related
conditions (Kafka, 1993). Sexual addiction has been defined by Carnes (1999) as any form of
compulsive behavior that is sex related and obstructs a normal life and eventually becomes
uncontrollable, although he has also referred to it as a pathological affiliation with an experience that
alters the mood (Carnes, 1983). By investigating the psychological motive behind addiction, there
seems to be three fundamental classifications: fantasy addictions (sexual activities that break away
from mundane reality), satiation addictions (sexual activities that ease discomfort and tension), and
arousal addictions (sexual activities that thrill and stimulate).Sexual behavior has the ability to
encompass all these three classifications of sexual addiction. It is difficult to determine the level of
sexual addiction though approximations vary from three percent to six percent of the population
(Carnes, 1999). In addition, studies show that there exists a high association between childhood abuse
and addiction to sex in adulthood, and it is very common for a sex addict to have gone through
significant levels of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse. Socio demographic factors are distorted

1. What is the enhanced screening process ?
Since October 2012 an enhanced screening process has been applied to all unauthorised maritime
arrivals from Sri Lanka to identify whether they are raising claims that engage Australia s non

Australia s non refoulement obligations prohibit the removal of anyone from
Australia to a country where they are in danger of death, torture or other mistreatment, including
arbitrary detention.1

Abstract
In the present work AISI 316L stainless steel samples have been welded by MIG welding. Butt joints
have been made. Plate thickness is kept constant (= 3mm). Some important parameters have been
varied during welding. Thus several butt welded joints have been made. Each sample of the joints has
been prepared under certain combination of welding parameters. The parameters considered for
variation, in the present work have been welding current, gas flow rate and nozzle to plate distance.
The design of experiment has been done using L9 Taguchi design of experiment. The influence of the
process parameters (mainly current, gas flow rate and nozzle to plate distance) has been examined
visually and also through X ray radiographic tests. Next, samples have been cut, machined to conform
to some specified dimensions for tensile testing. The quality of the weld has been evaluated in terms
of ultimate strength, yield strength and percentage of elongation of the

The Success Of E Business
Despite the dot.com collapse, there remains a strong belief that e business with its resurgent potential
for creating new transactional opportunities between firms, suppliers, complementary product/service
providers and customers will ultimately contribute significantly to the future performance of many
established firms. A number of impressive examples come to mind: Tesco in the UK, Otto Versand in
Germany, and Dell Computers and Cisco Systems in the US.1 For organizations such as these, e
business is more than a tool but part of a deeply held strategic disposition that enables them to
outperform the competition.2 Yet, in spite of these high profile success stories many other similarly
situated firms have failed to duplicate these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both questions are of practical importance because they tap into the organizational reasoning that
takes place to explicate and justify e business applications. Unraveling this reasoning is also of
theoretical importance to the information technology (IT) literature in that it underlies the extent to
which organizational success is determined by strategy content and/or process.3 Although intuitively
linked to one another, the content and process perspectives have evolved independently (see
Rajagopalan and Spreitzer (1996) for an extensive review). For example, a large body of content
research shows that various structural considerations influence performance. These antecedents are
both external and internal to the firm. The former is defined by economic, technological, political and
competitive forces (Pettigrew, 1992) and the later by core competencies (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994)
and dynamic capabilities (Teece et al., 1997). Both the external and internal schools of thought have
been used to explain variation in IT related performance (e.g., Porter, 2001; Wade and Holland, 2004).
The process school of thought is concerned with those activities leading to and supporting a choice of
strategy (Huff and Reger, 1987) and its implementation (Thompson and Strickland, 2001). Explaining
how strategy should be executed is the role of process research. This approach seeks the richness of a

Analysis Of Marten s Schematic View Essay
Assignment 1 Marten s schematic view This theory sees personality to be seen as having three
different levels that linked to each other, these personality views are: Psychological core Typical
responses Role related behaviour Psychological core is what people frequently say is the real you and
is the piece of you that contains your beliefs, values, attitudes and what you like ; all of these are
relatively constant and stable. Common responses are the way that you react to the world around you
and with different situations you find yourself in will find yourself responding differently. An example
of this is if you get fouled in football you may shout and make a fuss however on the flip side if you
are meeting new people you will most likely be quiet and shy because you don t want to overwhelm
them or come across the wrong way so you change the way you are around people because your
environment has changed. These are often good signals of your psychological core. Role related
behaviour is often the circumstances you find yourself in and this is the most changeable aspect of
personality. Your personality changes as your perception of your environment changes. For example
you might be the captain of your football team at college and showing leader roles and giving out
instructions then working at your part time job and following instructions you are being given, you are
changing how you deal with this because your environment has changed from the football

Marital Expectations In Edna Pontellier s The Awakening
The pressures and expectations of society can be truly grueling; at times it may seem there is only one
way to escape these pressures. The Awakening follows the transformation of a simple and obedient
housewife, Edna, into a self actualized, empowered woman or so it seems. In an epiphany, Edna
realizes the only way for her to truly escape the oppression she feels from society and her husband, is
to commit suicide. At the beginning of the novel Edna is afraid of water, at the end, it is her escape.
Edna realizes that her biggest fear of overcoming society s expectations is inescapable and these
expectations literally and metaphorically drown her. However, it is unclear if Edna actually made this
choice made for herself or if society chose it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edna s life completely lacked passion: passion for her husband, passion to be a mother, or even
passion towards her art. Edna lacks the internal motherly instincts expected of a woman, She was fond
of her children in an uneven, impulsive way. She would sometimes gather them passionately to her
heart; she would sometimes forget them. The year before they had spent part of the summer with their
grandmother Pontellier in Iberville. Feeling secure regarding their happiness and welfare, she did not
miss them except with an occasional intense longing. Their absence was a sort of relief, though she
did not admit this, even to herself. It seemed to free her of a responsibility which she had blindly
assumed and for which Fate had not fitted her (Chopin 18). Edna refuses to become the property of
her husband even though obedience was expected, You have been a very, very foolish boy, wasting
your time dreaming of impossible things when you speak of Mr. Pontellier setting me free! I am no
longer one of Mr. Pontellier s possessions to dispose of or not. I give myself where I choose. If he
were to say, Here, Robert, take her and be happy; she is yours, I should laugh at you both (Chopin
108). This is ironic because at this time according to Louisiana law, women were, in fact, their
husband s property. Edna s husband tried to control Edna s choices and behavior. The oppression Edna
feels from her marriage is symbolically represented through the parrot at the beginning of the novel.
The parrot is caged, showing Edna s imprisonment in her own marriage. The parrot also shrieks and
curses at Mr. Pontellier after he scolds Edna, showing what Edna wishes she had the power to do,
retaliate (Chopin 1). This symbolic representation is present throughout the novel in showing Edna s
imprisonment in her own life. The bird s shrieking shows how Edna wishes she could stand up for

Manners Changed Manners
How Manners Have Changed Over Time
As Americans, we often talk about the different changes that are taking place in our country and
society. One of those changes is manners, when I was growing up, it was very important to have
manners. This was the only acceptable behavior by adults, and parents would often say, practicing
manners outside of home was a representation of them which made me mannerism When a person
sees a child with manners, that child automatic shows their parent s teaching. I believe, due to the rise
of technology, parent s avoiding teaching their children proper manners and the lack of social skills,
the use of proper etiquette and manners is progressively fading away.
Therefore, with the rise of technology, people have adjusted manners as times have changed.
Particularly in America, with all the use of the different electronics devices such as: smart phones,
smart watches, laptops, computer devices, and etc., have almost obstruct the way we once view proper
etiquette and manners. Proper etiquette like dinner table is one of those manners that have taken its
turn and are almost nonexistent, due to the rise of technology. Family once had ambitious standards
when it came to sitting around the dinner table each night with their family. This was a time each
family valued and shared the important of dinner table manners to their children as a family
traditional.
However, technology is a contributor in this change that family once

Avocado Leaf Plasticity Essay
DIFFERENCES IN SUN AND SHADE LEAVES OF AVOCADO TREES BY PHENOTYPIC
PLASTICITY
INTRODUCTION: Phenotypic plasticity, or differing phenotypes from one genotype in different
environmental conditions, is a way for sessile organisms to adapt to changing environmental
conditions (Valladares et al., 2007). Plasticity was expected to be abundant, however, it did not occur
as often in nature due to resource limitations and environmental stress (Valladares et al., 2007). An
experiment by Matos tested the phenotypic plasticity to light availability in shade and sun leaves of
coffee trees (Matos et al., 2009). Their research indicated that compared [to] sun leaves, shade leaves

This process was done twice on each tree in the understory for shade leaves, and in the canopy for sun
leaves. Each leaf was measured for its surface area, length to width ratio, mass, specific leaf mass, and
color. Surface area was measured by a leaf area meter in squared centimeters. Length to width ratio
was measured by measuring the length (vertically along the bridge of the leaf) and the width
(horizontally on the widest part of the leaf) with a ruler in centimeters, and dividing the length by the
width. Mass was calculated by a balance in grams. Specific leaf mass (thickness) was measured by
dividing the mass by its surface area in grams per squared centimeter. Color was measured by having
three reference leaves provided by the instructor, indicating light (L), medium (M), and dark (D)
leaves and compared our collected leaves. After recording all of the data, these data were then input
into a statistical program called StatCat to determine normality through a normality test. The data for
surface area, length to width ratio, mass, and specific leaf mass for sun and shade leaves were both
normal, therefore, we chose a paired sample t test for all of them. A normality test was not needed for
color for sun and shade leaves due to it being a nominal scale data. The number of light, medium, and
dark shade leaves were tallied up according to color, and the same was done for the sun leaves. A
contingency table was made in

The Glass Unicorn Symbolism
Broken Glass and Breaking from the Past
In Tennessee William s 1944 play entitled The Glass Menagerie, Williams employed prevailing
symbolism to illustrate Laura s odd habit and ultimate fate. Laura escaped from reality when she was
in the presence of her glass animals, and suffered emotionally due to her physical deformity of one leg
being shorter than the other. The figurine in her collection that she admired the most was her glass
unicorn, which also served as a powerful representation of her oddness and physical defect.
Throughout this essay I will further discuss the significance of the glass unicorn, by giving further
detail on the connections made between Laura and the glass unicorn. Tennessee Williams illustrated
the significance of the glass unicorn in a symbolic fashion. The glass collection Laura possessed and
felt so fondly of, was more than just an oddity. Williams used the glass to represent the fragility in
Laura and as a standard for the decorative items that women might possess. The glass unicorn was
fragile and delicate, just as Laura was. This fragility was physically obvious in the glass; as Laura
said, If you breathe, it breaks! (1.7.89). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

some horses that don t have horns and all of them seem to get along nicely together (1.7.16 18). Laura
was much like the unicorn staying on the shelf with other horses without horns. Similar to her glass

Notes On Green Fluorescent Proteins
1. Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) GFP is a widely used tool in the field of Molecular biology and
Cell biology. It involves emission of fluorescence under Ultra Violet light which allows for direct
investigation into the inner working of cells. Green Fluorescent Protein was first isolated from the
jelly fish Aequorea victoria by Osamu Shimomura (Shimomura et al., 1962). Since its discovery, it has
become useful in the field of science. The GFP chromophore is formed from tri peptide in the primary
structure of GFP. Its fluorescence is turned on when exposed to molecular oxygen. The gene of GFP
has been introduced into many bacteria, yeast, fungi, plants and humans (Amsterdam, A. et al., 1996)
and it is still gaining rapid ground in the field of biological science.
2. Structure of the Green Fluorescent Protein
The GFP is composed of two structures; a barrel beta structure consisting of 11 beta strands and an
alpha helix containing the covalently bonded chromophore 4 p (hydroxybenzylidene) imidazolidin 5
one. The chromophore is in the centre of the barrel beta structure (Tsien, 1998). The size of the beta
structure is 42Å long and 24Å in diameter. Due to its length and width it creates a beta like structure
which is common in the GFP family (Yang, 1996). The chromophore is made from a tri peptide Ser65
Tyr66 Gly67. To form its structure GFP first folds into a nearly native conformation, then the
imidazolinoneis is formed by nucleophilic attack of the amide of Gly67 on the

Structural Model Of Structural Family Therapy
Structural family therapy is a model that consist of established, empathetic and exceptional
interventions/techniques and stance of the therapist that can be implemented and used to treat a wide
variety of families. My views on the mechanism of change is informed by the therapeutic paradigm I
use. I am a structural family therapist, and therefore my views about the family and interventions are
influenced by this model. There are several elements of the structural model that resonate with my
style and personality. Therefore in this paper, I will discuss the paradigm, presenting problems and
expected outcomes, mechanism of change, stance of the therapist, major interventions, and, self of the
therapist and diversity and contextual considerations of structural family therapy model.
Family Systems Theory Paradigm Gregory Bateson was one of the pioneers that set the way for
family system theory. Bateson studied families and their communication patterns. According to
Guttman (1991) Bateson believed that the uniformity and variability of a systems behavior were rule
governed. In order for Bateson to study the communication process of different systems he recruited
the support of the Palo Alto group (Guttman, 1991). The Palo Alto looked at the family as a whole and
focused on families with schizophrenic members. With the research the concept of homeostasis was
established. Homeostasis is the principle that negative feedback preserves stability in the system

Some of the physical symptoms attributed to disinfection byproducts include coughing, eye and nose
irritation, anemia, stomach discomfort, damaged hair and skin. Severe symptoms include wheezing or
aggravating asthma. It has also been found that the routine breathing of irritants may increased
sensitivity to other types of irritants such as fungi and bacteria. Improperly balanced chlorinated pools
can actually cause severe asthma. These findings may explain why swimmers are more prone to
exercise induced asthma than athletes in other sports. Results show that nitrogen trichloride or
trichloramine is a cause of occupational asthma in swimming pool workers like lifeguards and swim
instructors, says Dr. K. Thickett of the Occupational Lung Diseases Unit at the Birmingham
Heartlands Hospital. In Dr. Thickett s study, his subjects either stopped taking inhaled corticosteroids
altogether, or their asthma symptoms decreased significantly once they were placed in an environment

European and Australian sources. Outdoor aquatic facilities have plenty of fresh air and UV light,
which means they are not as susceptible to the chloramine problem. Chloramine formation can be
accelerated by a wide variety of aquatic activities.

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Metal Awnings
Wondering What Type Of Awnings To Choose? Here s How Metal And Fabric Compare
If you ve decided it s time to get awnings for your house windows, you might be overwhelmed with
all your choices. Unless you already know the kind of awnings you want, you may wonder which type
is best for your home.
You have two basic choices to begin with. You can install a metal or fabric awning. Each has its own
advantages and disadvantages, but both types work well, so you can t really go wrong no matter which
type you choose. Here is a look at how these options differ.
Awning Appearance
Metal awnings and fabric awnings look similar but since the materials are so different, you can tell
them apart quite easily. Metal awnings can be standing seam or flat metal.
If you have a metal roof, one of these awnings could look like a natural extension of the roof. They

Death And King s Horseman By Wole Soyinka
Death and King s Horseman by Wole Soyinka and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe both take
place in Africa but in different areas. Authors Soyinka and Achebe, created main characters that came
from different tribes, but experienced similar cultural clashes, which led to an issue of suicide within

both led to question their own character, family relations, and make life changing decisions.
Okonkwo, the lead character in Things Fall Apart, commits suicide after he has lost political
independence to colonialism. This is occasioned by the fact that his clansmen do not follow him into
battle against the colonialists. Throughout the story, Okonkwo desires to be seen as the symbol, the
perfect example, the individual who represents the archetype of Umuofian culture and values. His
strong individualism is questioned when the white colonialists arrive. Okonkwo s epiphany at
realizing that his community does not share in his desire to get rid of them only becomes clear in the
face of looming colonial domination. He says: Worthy men are no more...The greatest obstacles in
Umuofia is that

  • 5. The World War I And The Red Scare In the early 20th Century, the United States endured a time of political unrest. During World War I, fears of socialism and communism entered the psyche of the United States and culminated in the Red Scare. Hundreds of American citizens particularly immigrants suffered unprecedented arrests and deportations (Fariello 4). During this time, Charles Schenck, secretary of the Socialist Party of America, actively opposed the war. Due to Schenck s efforts, the organization distributed thousands of leaflets criticizing conscription and encouraging readers to assert rights against the draft and intimidation (Schenck v. United States 1). In the 1919 case Schenck v. United States, the defendants were charged with violating the Espionage Act of 1917 by causing and attempting to cause insubordination in U.S. military forces by distributing a document denouncing the draft in name of the 13th amendment (Schenck 1). When insurgency and fear continued, Congress amended the Espionage Act with the Sedition Act, which limited many more forms of speech (Fariello 14). At this point, society had to decide whether these limits on speech aligned with its interests. Holmes similarly had to consider whether to forfeit his belief that ideals in the Constitution and its Amendments exist absolutely (Cohen 27). In the end, he decided that a balance between absolute ideals and the responsibilities of Congress must prevail as the most fair compromise or standard. In this fairness, the Court affords ... Often they labeled unfit to perform many jobs outside of child bearing and domestic chores, even considered less intelligent than men are. In the past, this attitude translated into fewer jobs for women, below average pay, and poor working conditions. This continues today, despite the many great advances women have made in the past 100 years. This is evident in the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) fields, where a man is far more likely to get the position than a woman is. The rate of males EMTs compared to female EMTs was a ration of 8 1 in 2010. During my research, I came across a website which states, Female Medics are Deadly! ... Genetically modified organisms or GMOs are plants or animals made by splicing the gene and inserting DNA from different species of plants, animals, bacteria, and viruses. These genes would not naturally result in a cross breed. As a result of this biotechnology more than ninety percent of corn, soybean, cotton, sugar, and canola in the US are genetically modified. Other major GMOs are papaya, zucchini and yellow squash (Non GMO Project). If not stopped it will be a matter of another few years that they capitalized the entire food industry. Ironically even now, most of the popular food items of children like cereal, crackers, cookies, and processed lunch meat are all GMOs. Is genetically modified food good for consumers? What are its impacts? What are the effect of GMO on the environment? How do they influence the life of a common farmer and the food industry? Is the situation really bad? How did we get trapped in this? What steps can be taken to control it? These and many other questions need to be addressed before it is too late. One difficulty in setting lights is that they can significantly degrade the brightness and colour of the screen images if there is light either directly hitting or bouncing from the floor onto the screen. MMBC used its own sales force to focus on off premise locations (liquor stores or supermarkets) with much success. Blue collar males purchased 60% of the beer they drank at these off premise locations. The decline in MMBC was due to changes in beer drinkers preferences. This decline was happening across the whole United States to the traditional premium beer category at an annual rate of 4%. In categorising religious experiences is helpful to look at them as explicable through one of two theories: the objectivist thesis or the subjectivist thesis. The objectivist view supposes that there is some object or actual entity such as god which exists independently of the experience, interaction which causes the experience itself. God is described as numinous. This is a term often used to describe the experience in which God s separateness is highlighted. This was put forward by Rudolf Otto in his book The Idea of the Holy. Otto religion sprang from experience of the holly. Because the word numinous has many associations he used numen, something which is wholly other than the natural world An objectivist would argue that the religious experience is a proof of God s existence. However, others have criticised the reliability of religious experiences. The English philosopher Thomas Hobbes asked how it was possible to tell the differences between talking to God in a dream, and dreaming about talking to God. • 14. Difference Between Absolute and Comparative Advatage The theory of comparative advantage is perhaps one of the most important concepts in international trade theory. A country has an absolute advantage in the production of a good relative to another country if it can produce the good at lower cost or with higher productivity. Absolute advantage compares industry productivities across countries. In the case of Zambia, for instance, the country has an absolute advantage over many countries in the production of copper. This occurs because of the existence of reserves of copper ore or bauxite. We can see that in terms of the production of goods, there are obvious gains from specialisation and trade, if Zambia produces copper and exports it to those countries that specialise in the production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Country B has an absolute disadvantage. Due to abundance of raw materials or more productively efficient production techniques, Country A is able to produce more wheat and more maize that Country B. Perhaps common sense tells us that Country A should produce both goods and export surpluses and Country B neither. However, when comparative advantage is considered a different story emerges. Consider the opportunity cost of Country A producing one more unit of maize. Half a unit of wheat has been foregone. When country B produces one more unit of maize two units of wheat are foregone. Economics is concerned with the allocation of scarce resources. Fewer resources are foregone if Country A concentrates its resources in the production of maize. Now consider the opportunity cost of Country B producing one more unit of wheat. Two units of maize have been foregone. When Country B produces one more unit of wheat only half a unit of maize is foregone. Fewer resources are foregone if Country B specialises in the production of wheat. In the above case Country A should produce maize and Country B wheat. The surpluses produce should then be traded. We can see that the principle of comparative advantage is clearly counter intuitive. Many results from the formal model are contrary to simple logic; in the other hand the logic behind absolute advantage is quite intuitive. Source: Economics 7th Edition, David Begg. Team member ratings suggest that transformational leadership has a stronger effect in teams that use only computer based communication, and leaders who increase their transformational leadership achieve higher levels of team performance. This source was of particular use as I had limited information on transformational leadership and it applied the theory to both virtual and face to face teams. The information provided gave me an understanding as to why transformational leadership is vital when interaction between group members is limited and high levels of trust in team members is required. 1. Plate thickness is kept constant (= 3mm). Some important parameters have been varied during welding. Thus several butt welded joints have been made. Each sample of the joints has been prepared under certain combination of welding parameters. The parameters considered for variation, in the present work have been welding current, gas flow rate and nozzle to plate distance. The design of experiment has been done using L9 Taguchi design of experiment. The influence of the process parameters (mainly current, gas flow rate and nozzle to plate distance) has been examined visually and also through X ray radiographic tests. Next, samples have been cut, machined to conform to some specified dimensions for tensile testing. The Success Of E Business Despite the dot.com collapse, there remains a strong belief that e business with its resurgent potential for creating new transactional opportunities between firms, suppliers, complementary product/service providers and customers will ultimately contribute significantly to the future performance of many established firms. A number of impressive examples come to mind: Tesco in the UK, Otto Versand in Germany, and Dell Computers and Cisco Systems in the US.1 For organizations such as these, e business is more than a tool but part of a deeply held strategic disposition that enables them to outperform the competition.2 Yet, in spite of these high profile success stories many other similarly situated firms have failed to duplicate these ... Both questions are of practical importance because they tap into the organizational reasoning that takes place to explicate and justify e business applications. Unraveling this reasoning is also of theoretical importance to the information technology (IT) literature in that it underlies the extent to which organizational success is determined by strategy content and/or process.3 Although intuitively linked to one another, the content and process perspectives have evolved independently (see Rajagopalan and Spreitzer (1996) for an extensive review). For example, a large body of content research shows that various structural considerations influence performance. These antecedents are both external and internal to the firm. The former is defined by economic, technological, political and competitive forces (Pettigrew, 1992) and the later by core competencies (Hamel and Prahalad, 1994) and dynamic capabilities (Teece et al., 1997). Both the external and internal schools of thought have been used to explain variation in IT related performance (e.g., Porter, 2001; Wade and Holland, 2004). The process school of thought is concerned with those activities leading to and supporting a choice of strategy (Huff and Reger, 1987) and its implementation (Thompson and Strickland, 2001). Explaining how strategy should be executed is the role of process research. This approach seeks the richness of a more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Analysis Of Marten s Schematic View Essay Assignment 1 Marten s schematic view This theory sees personality to be seen as having three different levels that linked to each other, these personality views are: Psychological core Typical responses Role related behaviour Psychological core is what people frequently say is the real you and is the piece of you that contains your beliefs, values, attitudes and what you like ; all of these are relatively constant and stable. Common responses are the way that you react to the world around you and with different situations you find yourself in will find yourself responding differently. An example of this is if you get fouled in football you may shout and make a fuss however on the flip side if you are meeting new people you will most likely be quiet and shy because you don t want to overwhelm them or come across the wrong way so you change the way you are around people because your environment has changed. These are often good signals of your psychological core. Role related behaviour is often the circumstances you find yourself in and this is the most changeable aspect of personality. Your personality changes as your perception of your environment changes. For example you might be the captain of your football team at college and showing leader roles and giving out instructions then working at your part time job and following instructions you are being given, you are changing how you deal with this because your environment has changed from the football ... The Awakening follows the transformation of a simple and obedient housewife, Edna, into a self actualized, empowered woman or so it seems. In an epiphany, Edna realizes the only way for her to truly escape the oppression she feels from society and her husband, is to commit suicide. At the beginning of the novel Edna is afraid of water, at the end, it is her escape. Edna realizes that her biggest fear of overcoming society s expectations is inescapable and these expectations literally and metaphorically drown her. However, it is unclear if Edna actually made this choice made for herself or if society chose it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edna s life completely lacked passion: passion for her husband, passion to be a mother, or even passion towards her art. Edna lacks the internal motherly instincts expected of a woman, She was fond of her children in an uneven, impulsive way. She would sometimes gather them passionately to her heart; she would sometimes forget them. The year before they had spent part of the summer with their grandmother Pontellier in Iberville. Feeling secure regarding their happiness and welfare, she did not miss them except with an occasional intense longing. Their absence was a sort of relief, though she did not admit this, even to herself. It seemed to free her of a responsibility which she had blindly assumed and for which Fate had not fitted her (Chopin 18). Edna refuses to become the property of her husband even though obedience was expected, You have been a very, very foolish boy, wasting your time dreaming of impossible things when you speak of Mr. Pontellier setting me free! I am no longer one of Mr. Pontellier s possessions to dispose of or not. I give myself where I choose. If he were to say, Here, Robert, take her and be happy; she is yours, I should laugh at you both (Chopin 108). This is ironic because at this time according to Louisiana law, women were, in fact, their husband s property. Edna s husband tried to control Edna s choices and behavior. The oppression Edna feels from her marriage is symbolically represented through the parrot at the beginning of the novel. The parrot is caged, showing Edna s imprisonment in her own marriage. The parrot also shrieks and curses at Mr. Pontellier after he scolds Edna, showing what Edna wishes she had the power to do, retaliate (Chopin 1). This symbolic representation is present throughout the novel in showing Edna s imprisonment in her own life. The bird s shrieking shows how Edna wishes she could stand up for ... One of those changes is manners, when I was growing up, it was very important to have manners. I believe, due to the rise of technology, parent s avoiding teaching their children proper manners and the lack of social skills, the use of proper etiquette and manners is progressively fading away. Avocado Leaf Plasticity Essay DIFFERENCES IN SUN AND SHADE LEAVES OF AVOCADO TREES BY PHENOTYPIC PLASTICITY INTRODUCTION: Phenotypic plasticity, or differing phenotypes from one genotype in different environmental conditions, is a way for sessile organisms to adapt to changing environmental conditions (Valladares et al., 2007). Plasticity was expected to be abundant, however, it did not occur as often in nature due to resource limitations and environmental stress (Valladares et al., 2007). This process was done twice on each tree in the understory for shade leaves, and in the canopy for sun leaves. Each leaf was measured for its surface area, length to width ratio, mass, specific leaf mass, and color. Surface area was measured by a leaf area meter in squared centimeters. Length to width ratio was measured by measuring the length (vertically along the bridge of the leaf) and the width (horizontally on the widest part of the leaf) with a ruler in centimeters, and dividing the length by the width. Mass was calculated by a balance in grams. Specific leaf mass (thickness) was measured by dividing the mass by its surface area in grams per squared centimeter. Color was measured by having three reference leaves provided by the instructor, indicating light (L), medium (M), and dark (D) leaves and compared our collected leaves. After recording all of the data, these data were then input into a statistical program called StatCat to determine normality through a normality test. The data for surface area, length to width ratio, mass, and specific leaf mass for sun and shade leaves were both normal, therefore, we chose a paired sample t test for all of them. A normality test was not needed for color for sun and shade leaves due to it being a nominal scale data. The number of light, medium, and dark shade leaves were tallied up according to color, and the same was done for the sun leaves. A contingency table was made in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Glass Unicorn Symbolism Broken Glass and Breaking from the Past In Tennessee William s 1944 play entitled The Glass Menagerie, Williams employed prevailing symbolism to illustrate Laura s odd habit and ultimate fate. Laura escaped from reality when she was in the presence of her glass animals, and suffered emotionally due to her physical deformity of one leg being shorter than the other. The figurine in her collection that she admired the most was her glass unicorn, which also served as a powerful representation of her oddness and physical defect. Throughout this essay I will further discuss the significance of the glass unicorn, by giving further detail on the connections made between Laura and the glass unicorn. Tennessee Williams illustrated the significance of the glass unicorn in a symbolic fashion. The glass collection Laura possessed and felt so fondly of, was more than just an oddity. Williams used the glass to represent the fragility in Laura and as a standard for the decorative items that women might possess. The glass unicorn was fragile and delicate, just as Laura was. This fragility was physically obvious in the glass; as Laura said, If you breathe, it breaks! (1.7.89). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Notes On Green Fluorescent Proteins 1. Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) GFP is a widely used tool in the field of Molecular biology and Cell biology. It involves emission of fluorescence under Ultra Violet light which allows for direct investigation into the inner working of cells. Green Fluorescent Protein was first isolated from the jelly fish Aequorea victoria by Osamu Shimomura (Shimomura et al., 1962). Since its discovery, it has become useful in the field of science. The GFP chromophore is formed from tri peptide in the primary structure of GFP. Its fluorescence is turned on when exposed to molecular oxygen. The gene of GFP has been introduced into many bacteria, yeast, fungi, plants and humans (Amsterdam, A. et al., 1996) and it is still gaining rapid ground in the field of biological science. 2. Structure of the Green Fluorescent Protein The GFP is composed of two structures; a barrel beta structure consisting of 11 beta strands and an alpha helix containing the covalently bonded chromophore 4 p (hydroxybenzylidene) imidazolidin 5 one. The chromophore is in the centre of the barrel beta structure (Tsien, 1998). The size of the beta structure is 42Å long and 24Å in diameter. Due to its length and width it creates a beta like structure which is common in the GFP family (Yang, 1996). The chromophore is made from a tri peptide Ser65 Tyr66 Gly67. To form its structure GFP first folds into a nearly native conformation, then the imidazolinoneis is formed by nucleophilic attack of the amide of Gly67 on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
