Media-evaluation, question 4
Classification. Description.
u class. U class is for children aged 4 and over. The film
should not unsettle anyone older than this.
pg class. Pg class is for children aged 8 and up unless
accompanied by na adult and should not unsettle
anyone above the age of 8.
12 and 12a class. 12 and 12 a class means that the film is suitable
for children 12 and up and 12a would suggest
that an adult should accompany the child.
15 class. 15 class is the child should not be under this age
as the film may contain aspects which are not
suitable for a younger age. Eg frequent violence,
drug use, nudity or horror.
18 class. 18 class tells us that the film will not be suitable
for anyone younger, strong violence, horror,
sexual references, nudity, threat or blood and
gore may occur frequently throughout the film.
 The amazing spider man 2- contains moderate violence and an element of threat. I
believe the specific element are similar but not as frequent.
 The expendables 3- contains frequent violence and strong language. I think this is
similar to our product which would have less violence however drug use, which is
included in our product, may have an effect on the age rating.
 Montana- contains strong blood violence, strong language, drug use and sexual
references. i believe this is very similar to out product in the way the element are
shown but not through the whole film.
 The women in black- contains strong horror and psychological threat. Originally
this film was a 15 but was edited to be a 12a to create I wider audience.
 Sin city- contains strong blood violence, strong sex, nudity and drug use. Our
product contained some of these but to a much lesser degree. For example drug
use and violence.
 The purge anarchy- contains strong blood violence, threat and strong language.
This has a similar narrative to our product and contains the same thing but to a
lesser extent.
In my opinion my product would be rated a 15. this is
because it does contain some violence and also as it is
gang related things like drug use and strong language
however it will not be throughout the entirety of my
product. This is why I chose not to rate it an 18 as I found
that the things named which are in an 18 are throughout
the film and becomes part of the narrative. For example
the purge which is a similar genre to my product, contains
strong blood violence throughout the whole film which is
where they would differ and I think making my product a
15.
 During the planning of our product we created a survey monkey questionnaire for
the rest of the group to fill out. The idea of this was that it would tell us what sort
of things people of our age group would most like to see in a thriller film. This is
what we based our product around in the making of it as we felt by doing this our
product would attract our target audience.
 This also helped us to workout what classification our product is. This is because
it highlight what element people of that age group want to see. For example one of
the favourite sub genres was crime this is why we decided to do crime and looked
at existing crime thrillers and looked at the age rating they had. The majority
were rated age 15.
This is an
example of a
crime thriller
with a similar
narrative
which is rated
a 15.
