WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT AND HOW DID YOU ATTRACT
YOUR AUDIENCE?
Question 4 & 5
My film opening’s genre is thriller, the reason why I aimed my media product for
the age range of 16-35 years old both genders.
The target audience of many thrillers are 18+, this because they contain many
disturbing characters with psychological issues. Some common themes in most
thriller films are violence and psychological issues. These both may be a problem
for younger audiences because this could cause nightmares for younger viewers
and cause them to be very scared for a longer period of time. Because of this, the
thriller genre as a whole is often aimed at more adult audiences. To prove it I
searched in the site “The Numbers”.
Here is a photo of Top-Grossing Movies between 1995 and 2016.
As the picture shows, the MPAA Rating for the first 25 top grossing
movies for Thriller genre are PG-13 and R.
PG-13 means parents strongly cautioned, therefore parents are urged to be
cautious because some material may be inappropriate for pre-teenagers.
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
R means restricted, contains some adult material, therefore parents are urged
to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.
Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
I aimed my media product for the age of 16 years old as well as
adult audiences because I chose to not show blood and violence
scenes in my film opening, therefore my media product could be
rated PG-13 rather than being rated R. Choosing to rate my media
product PG-13, it would be allowed to be watched by more people
and my audience would increase. Another reason why I aimed my
media product for age of 16-35 years old is due to I am 17 years
old and usually I’d rather watch thriller movies than other genres.
I aimed for both males and females because both thriller genre is not
specifically aimed to a specific gender. However thriller films with
different sub-genre are aimed to different people, such as romantic
thrillers to females and action thrillers to males. In my case, my media
product is aimed to both genders because both males and females
could be attracted by the story of my film opening as well as by the
characters’ backgrounds. I think my media product would attract my
target audience because I made my opening scene look like a thriller
film using thriller conventions, such as the sound, low-lightning and
editing. Also the use of the editing like in the film “The Shining” and
the use of the masked killers as seen in “Friday 13th” and “Halloween”
would attract the audience of those films.
