Who Is Vignette In My America
Vignette/Story/Anecdote #1 (Retold by Louis Adamic in his book called My America): "In a voice strangely old for her age, the girl said: 'Excuse me,
mister, but we have no eats in our house and my mother she said I should take my brother before we go to school and ring a doorbell in some
house'–she swallowed heavily and took a deep breath–'and ask you to give us...something...to eat'...He had heard that kids were ringing doorbells and
asking for food in the Bronx, in Harlem and in Brooklyn, but he had not really believed it" (7). This excerpt shows that the Depression greatly
affected people, leading them to behave in ways they probably wouldn't have in normal instances, in this case, a young girl and her brother are
begging for food at strangers' homes based on her mother's direction. However, they aren't the only ones, as Adamic wrote that he had heard about
children like the girl and her brother, in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn, three major cities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nonetheless, he dabbled at a job in downtown Manhattan brokerage house. Before long he quit with the explanation: 'I didn't finish until five
o'clock and by the time I got uptown it was six. And then I had to get up early the next morning.' At a later date Astor was employed briefly by a
shipping firm, and when he quit this second job, he commented: 'I have discovered that work interferes with leisure.' He was representative of that
leisure class which Morgan felt must be maintained to save civilization" (13). Even though the Depression affected everyone, the degrees which
people were affected varied based on a variety of factors, especially social status. This excerpt shows that while many poor people struggled to find
jobs, which they would use to take care of themselves and their families, some rich people were not only to find jobs, they didn't value the work as
they believed it interrupted their free

Mountain Men from the North American Rock Mountains
Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810 through the 1880s (with a peak population in the early
1840s). Approximately 3,000 mountain men ranged the mountains between 1820 and 1840, the peak beaver–harvesting period. While there were
many free trappers, most mountain men were employed by major fur companies. The life of a company man was almost militarized. The men had
mess groups, hunted and trapped inbrigades and always reported to the head of the trapping party. This man was called a "boosway", a bastardization
of the French term bourgeoisie. He was the leader of the brigade and the head trader.
Donald Mackenzie, representing the North West Company, held a Rendezvous in the Boise RiverValley in 1819.[2] The rendezvous system was later
implemented by William Henry Ashley of theRocky Mountain Fur Company, whose company representatives would haul supplies to specific mountain
locations in the spring, engage in trading with trappers, and bring pelts back to communities on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in the fall. Ashley
sold his business to the outfit of Jackson and Sublette. He continued to earn revenue by selling that firm their supplies. This system of rendezvous with
trappers continued when other firms, particularly the American Fur Company owned by John Jacob Astor, entered the field.
The annual rendezvous was often held at Horse Creek on the Green River, now called the Upper Green River Rendezvous Site, near present–day

Who Is The Narrator Of Bartleby The Scrivener
The Narrator and Bartleby
In Herman Melville's short story, Bartleby, the Scrivener, the storyteller's aura towards Bartleby is ceaselessly changing, the storyteller's attitude is gone
on through the maker's use of theoretical parts, for instance, lingual power particular and occupying, point of view first individual, and tone–confuse
and inconvenience.
One of the unique parts that Melville uses that go on the storyteller's mindset towards Bartleby is style. The maker's style in this short story is
astoundingly hypnotizing and is moreover imperceptibly silly. One of the ways this is used is the time when the maker carefully scorns the storyteller

Titanic Film Analysis
Inside the setting of film industry, the film Titanic by James Cameron has a place with epic sentiment/disaster sort. The movie, released in 1997, was a
worldwide film industry hit because of the fact that the director gave measure up to significance to history, fiction and sentiment. To be particular, one
can see that the film's plot depends on the historical background of RMS Titanic. On the opposite side, the primary characters including the protagonist
and the woman of courage (Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater) are fictive characters. Plus, the component of romance between the primary
characters (Jack and Rose) is the movie's fundamental attraction. The film uncovers the critical and ramantic story of two young people, Jack Dawson
and Rose Bukater who while on Titanic ship from the shoreline of England to the United States, began to fall in love at first sight regardless of their
diverse social classes.
Jack Dawson was a youthful talented craftsman from a poor foundation, and Rose, a young lady wedded to a wealthy yet savage more man who she
doesn't love, experience a short emotional love life. The film picture uncovers the idea of connections that exist in the general public, and whose
significance connected in the mid 20th century ,as well as which still sounds good right up till the present time. A teenage young lady from a well off
family can, today, get wedded to a poor kid from a modest foundation as long as the two are attracted to each other.

American Fur Trading Company and John Jacob Astor
The American Fur Company and John Jacob Astor
I.Introduction "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely (Lord Acton). John Jacob Astor was a man that had absolute power
during his era and used his power and wealth to benefit himself and not the "social fabric of society". Astor lived during the time of a
post–revolutionary America which allowed him to build a monopolist empire with little restraint from government or society. Starting out in American
as a young German immigrant, John Jacob Astor became involved in the fur trading business "without ever having set a trap" (Stokesbury) and
eventually built a fur trading company that extended across the United States and into Canada and made him the richest man in ... Show more content

He was the "personification of monopoly, determined to rule or ruin," wrote historian Hiram Martin Chittenden in 1903. "And he was thoroughly
hated even by those who respected his power" (Crossen). The issue arises should one person be able to control that much power and isn't held
accountable for the use of that power to society? One complicated issue of the American Fur Company reign was its impact on the expansion of the
United States westward. It strongly influenced the history of the west, not only making way for permanent settlements but by also opening the Great
Lakes commercial fishing, steamboat transportation, and trade in that area (Stokesbury). But was the benefit derived from this westward expansion
justified by the "extraction" that took place against its stakeholders or those it affected? Is injustice every justified?
III.Analysis of Issues Astor, in his desire for more money and greater profit, completely disregarded the needs of the people his actions affected. This
lack of social responsibility was the American Fur Company's worst offense. His was constantly looking for ways to improve his financial bottom line.
Whatever means were needed to increase his company's hold on the American fur trading industry was permissible. When Astor learned that President
George Washington was having the government set up fur–trading posts "to be run with benevolent policies", which would require goods

The Titanic Research Paper
At 11:40 April 14th, 1912, the renowned Titanic hit an iceberg on the journey from Southampton to New York. The skip was completely sunk two
hours later and more than 1500 passengers and crew members died. Over time we have accounted and collected many relics and artifacts from the
wreckage, everything from watches to letters. At an auction in England, a tragic sea–stained letter was sold after being found on the body of a Titanic
victim. It was one of the last known messages to have survived the sinking ship, written by a first–class passenger Alexander Oskar Holverson. It was
written on the ships stationary to the passengers' mother on April 13, 1912, after the ship embarked from Southampton, England. The letter is said to

The Influence Of Tea On American Culture
Did you know that tea is the most popular beverage worldwide? Tea is important in many cultures and is traditional. The introduction of tea in the
Victorian Era had an impact on many countries, making it a part of tradition for cultures.
Tea comes to England and becomes very important to people and cultures. Great Britain, was the last to break into Chinese and East Indian trade
routes. "The first samples of tea reached England between 1652 and 1654." Tea becomes popular enough to replace ale as the national drink of
England. Tea rose from 40,000 pounds in 1699 to 240,000 pounds, in 1708. The English had two main meals, breakfast and dinner.
The first tea parties and flavors of tea in England. "Tea was first made when the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting under a tree while his
servant boiled water for him to drink, when some leaves from the tree fell into the water" (Stash Tea). "Tea was drunk by all levels of society. Anna,
the Duchess of Bedford, started inviting people to her house to have tea and cake at 5 o'clock" (UK Tea & Infusions). "The menu was small cakes,
bread and butter sandwiches, sweets, and of course tea" (Stash Tea). The tea was made in the kitchen and brought out to the lady of the house in

In June 1767, the tea tax was to become the watershed of America's desire for freedom. The colonists rebelled and openly purchased imported tea,
largely Dutch origin. The new Lord of the Treasury, Lord North, as a response to this pressure, granted the new company permission to sell directly to
the colonists, by–passing the colonial merchants and pocketing the difference. In plotting this strategy, England was counting on the well known
passion among American women for tea to force consumption. Throughout the colonies, women pledged publicly at meetings and in newspapers not to

Herman Melville's Story, Bartleby, the Scrivener Essay
In Herman Melville's short story, Bartleby, the Scrivener, the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is constantly changing, the narrator's attitude is
conveyed through the author's use of literary elements such as; diction–descriptive and comical, point of view–first person, and tone–confusion and
sadness. One of the literary elements that Melville uses that convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is diction. The author's diction in this short
story is very descriptive and is also slightly comical. One of the ways this is used is when the author gently mocks the narrator by having him expose
his flaws through his own words. For example, when the narrator talks of John Jacob Astor, a well respected man who complemented him, we ... Show

Diction is just one of the literary elements used in this short story which convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby. Another literary element
that is used to convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is through point of view. In Bartleby, the Scrivener the point of view that is used is
that of first person narration. By Melville's use of first person narration it allows us to get close to Bartleby but still be confused and in awe of him
and since we see him through the eyes of his employer we can quickly identify with the narrator's confusing feelings over Bartleby. An example of
this appears on page 127 in paragraph 6; "I sat awhile in perfect silence, rallying my stunned faculties. Immediately it occurred to me that my ears
had deceived me, or Bartleby had entirely misunderstood my meaning. I repeated my request in the clearest tone I could assume; but in quite as clear
a one came the previous reply, "I would prefer not to." Here Bartleby has just refused orders from his boss who sits at his desk stunned at wheat he has
just heard. This is not the only time throughout the story in which Bartleby does this and always with the same words; "I would prefer not to" which
only frustrates and confuses the narrator. Another contributor to the narrator's growing

How Does Bartleby The Scrivener Relate To Capitalism
Herman Melville's tale "Bartleby, The Scrivener" intentionally reinforces the idea of capitalism. Melville exposes this aspect in his work by the
behavior that is conducted by the lawyer towards his employees and at the end by the death of Bartleby. Working in a capitalist society, the
employees end up becoming dehumanized by the upper class. The upper class looks at them as tools or aide devices. The employees are available
to help aide in the boss's success. Capitalist people are wealthy individuals whom use money to invest in trade in order to gain a profit. In the tale
"Bartleby, The Scrivener" the lawyer's behavior proves that the story reinforces capitalist ideas. The unnamed lawyer is a business lawyer whom deals
with the stocks and bonds of other wealthy individuals. At first I find it interesting that the lawyer remains unnamed. With such high regards about his
character and with the status he takes on, you would assume he would be named in the tale. A nameless person seems to me as well insignificant. We
can take note right away that his views towards his employees aren't of the highest standards. We can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The nicknames signify a certain task they do or a personality trait they exhibit. I see this, as the lawyer does not value them at a respectful level. He
states, "First, Turkey, second, Nippers; third Ginger Nut. These may seem names, the like of which are not usually found in the directory. In truth
they were nicknames, mutually conferred upon each other by my three clerks, and were deemed expressive of their respective persons or characters."
Even though the names were mutually conferred upon each other, it still stood as a dehumanizing agent. It is if they weren't seen as significant to be
able to be called upon by their birth given name. Nicknames tend to be given because someone doesn't feel as if their name is of importance to be
remembered. (Melville,

Scrivener Day Bartleby Discussion Questions
Bartleby, the Scrivener Day 1
1.
The lawyer is a smart and observant man that runs a small law practice with four employees. He seems oddly obsessed with one of his former
employees though. This infatuation with Bartleby has caused him to write an entire short story about him.
2.
The lawyer is considered by others as "an eminently safe man" because his job, lifestyle, and demeanor are not flashy or risky at all. For example, his
job as a lawyer is to work with bonds and mortgages not on high profile murders.
3.
The lawyer's "profound conviction" that the easiest way in life is the best way shows the reader that he is not very motivated, is probably content
with stay where he is at in his career, and is lazy.
4.
The lawyer's business is "a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The lawyer's office and general surroundings are presumably in an office building which is in a city. Inside his office there are two sides one with
Turkey and Nippers. The other side has the lawyer and Bartleby who are separated by a screen. In this story, the setting is important because Bartleby
in particular and the other people in the office as well are trapped in by other buildings and screens.
12
As presented, Bartleby is a quiet, hard working, pale man that rarely leaves the office during work hours.
13
The work quarters Bartleby has been given are very cramped and claustrophobic. For example, out of all the widows near Bartleby's desk the only
thing visible is bricks from the other buildings and right behind him is a screen separating his office with his boss's office.
14
As a new hire, Bartleby is very diligent and effective in his work. The lawyer is surprised by how well his new hire is doing so soon. The lawyer even
described Bartleby as parched for copy work.
15
The lawyer's initial impression of Bartleby was very positive. His impression was so positive that he put Bartleby's desk closest to his own desk so
that he could do his more important and urgent tasks.
16
I regarded Bartleby's response to the lawyer when asked to proofread documents as being as respectful as possible so that he wouldn't upset the

The Tragedy Of The Titanic
Because of a little known film, many people assume that they know the harrowing stories of the tragic tale of the Titanic. But quite often, those
harrowing stories of survival and demise are told from a man's perspective. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that only "19%" of the male
passengers and crew survived the shipwreck while "75%" of the female passengers and crew lived, or maybe it is because the coverage of the
tragedy and inquiries into the global disaster were mainly presented from the male perspective (Henderson). Whatever the reason, primary sources
regarding female passengers are seemingly harder to come across compared to male–centric news stories, inquiry testimonies, and journals. Even after
finding a select number of primary sources featuring women, the number of those related to first–class women compared to third–class women is
alarmingly insufficient. Why is it that an already misrepresented class must be subjected to class exclusion? Sexism and classism for the women
aboard the Titanic continued long after the ship established its watery grave. Fight or flight is a dilemma that nearly every passenger aboard the Titanic
must have contemplated once they learned the fate of the magnificent ocean liner. While it is easy to assume that women had the upper hand in
surviving the catastrophe, it certainly was not a walk through the First Class Lounge. Shortly after the Titanic struck the iceberg, a telegram was sent to
the Olympic relaying that member of the

The New York Public Library is one of the most revered institutions of a city with many competing interests. To stand out of the crowd is a tough and

The two divisions were often on different pages and experienced communication challenges. This created several pricing difficulties making it even
harder to globally market the products. To further the problem, the ID felt as though their R&D received less than sufficient manufacturing
resources, which limited the ability to forecast the global market. Difficulties in communication slowed R&D, decision making, and required a
major change in the organizational structure. Gill decided to increase the capabilities of the ID and give specific regions more power in the decision
making process. Regionalization: New structures were formed in order to approach the ID problems. The organizational reconstruction focused on
speed of results, process to be driven by B&L executives, and input from as many B&L employees as possible. A significant amount of time and
money was dedicated to creating a task force that was goal was to evaluate organizational structure. They concluded that it was necessary for a
fine–tuning of the current organization structure, a regional structure, a product–region matrix, and a global product structure. Eventually the idea
regionalization was adopted by the Advisory Committee. The ID was to be dissolved and replaced by headquarters in Europe, Middle East and Africa,
Asia–Pacific, and the Western Hemisphere. Jobs in the ID were reallocated to different divisions and new products were developed according to align
with the region's needs.

Self-representation in William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe...
The stories William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe and Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Melville are useful examples to discuss the difficulties of
self–representation. While the narrator in Poe's tale begs us to "let me call myself, for the present, William Wilson" the complex self–representation
here is also prevalent in the heart of Melville's story. West's Encyclopedia of American Law tells us that "courts usually discourage self
–representation
...even attorneys are well advised to hire another attorney." The same problems with self–representation occur in literature. The unnamed narrator in
Melville's tale shows the complexities of self–representation through age, his relationship to Astor, anonymity, deceit and his complex values. Poe's...

Astor was known as "the Landlord of New York" and that "while acquiring wealth in this way, Astor made many people suffer... he was widely
despised" most importantly that "most New Yorkers shared this opinion of Astor at the time of the first publication of Melville's story". By associating
with Astor, an individual known for the ruining of other's lives through mortgage foreclosures, the narrator aligns himself with the reputation of a
sinner – even though he claims to have "prudence" and "method" as qualities; clearly, there is nothing prudent or straightforward in the actions of
Astor, who coldly took the money of those who needed it most. Though he considers Astor to be a great man, and takes his compliments highly, it
shows that the narrator's views of greatness are completely opposite to popular opinion. He thinks that by representing himself in this way – as a man
favoured by a famous lawyer– he will appear impressive and integral. Unfortunately, for him, this actually works to the complete opposite effect on the
audience of the period. The narrator also adds that "while of other law–copyists I might write the complete life, of Bartleby nothing of that sort can be

Therefore as the Oregon Trail became more popular and more people pushed west it brought an uprising of conflicts between pioneers and Native

What Is The Difference Between Beowulf And The Wanderer
Time is something that humanity has not been able to conquer. Specifically, John Niles says that "time and an indifferent fate blot out even the most
glorious of human achievements." He means that one person's accomplishments and material rewards will eventually be forgotten over time and thus
mean nothing. This concept of time as an eraser can be seen in both Beowulf and "The Wanderer" where the past is diminished into a shadow of what it
once was before eventually being forgotten.
In Beowulf, there are many instances where the poet will convey how ephemeral a man's achievements in life can be after he is taken by death. Beowulf
tells Hrothgar, "For every one of us, living in this world/ means waiting for our end. Let whoever can/ win glory before death. When a warrior is gone,
/ that will be his best and only bulwark" (Beowulf Ln 1386–9). Beowulf says that glory won in life only matters to the warrior after he is dead, and no
amount of riches or wealth can help him in the afterlife. The warrior fades from the cultural memory until he is totally forgotten. Hrothgar reminds
Beowulf of this later in the poem, "Do not give way to pride./ For a brief while your strength is in bloom/ but it fades quickly...and death will arrive,
/ dear warrior, to sweep you away" (Beowulf Ln 1760–8). Hrothgar warns Beowulf that his strength and prowess will not last long and when they fail,
so too will his legend fade over time. The king says that Beowulf should focus on more spiritual rewards than material ones since the material gains
will eventually wither or be no help to him in the afterlife. After death, time and fate will take away his legend and then his achievements will be
meaningless. At the end of the poem, Beowulf speaks his last words to Wiglaf as he realizes what death has done to his clan. "You are the last of us,
the only one left/ of the Waegmundings. Fate swept us away,/ sent my whole brave high–born clan/ to their final doom," (Beowulf Ln 2813–6). Fate
sent death to Beowulf's clan and with his death, the clan will fall into obscurity over time and eventually be forgotten. The Beowulf poet shows in
many places how easy it is for death, and through it time and fate, to wipe out any trace of man's achievements.

Titanic Argumentative Essay
It is a well known fact that the Titanic's meaning is to have exceptional strength, size, or power, which was true when the RMS Titanic was built. We
still remember the sinking of the Titanic today. It was a memorable moment because the Titanic was thought to be the "unsinkable" and the largest
ship ever made of it's time in 1912. There were also many rich and famous people to set sail on the Titanic from Southampton to New York and many
of them died from the sinking of the Titanic. It was also it's her first voyage to set sail from southampton to New york.
When the Titanic was finally launched on May 31, 1911. Bruce Ismay was the chairman of the White Star Line company and Thomas Andrews was the

Essay about Narrative Styles In Poe, Melville, Hawthorne
narrative styles in Melville's Bartleby, Poe's Arthur Gordon Pym, and Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables. How all three authors utilize a
"conversational" tone for the function of their work.
In works by three of the most classically American authors of the nineteenth century, Melville, Poe, andHawthorne, a trait that can be considered
common to all three authors is pronounced clearly as a means to their narration. This trait is that of deploying a narrative laden with– and moreover led
by –conversational phrasing and asides. The flow of passages in these authors' works, Bartleby, Arthur Gordon Pym, and The House ofSeven Gables,
takes on a spoken structure, and numerous operations are made by each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This feature is then emphasized when the narrator, having finished his resume of Nippers and Turkey, begins his next passage as though backtracking
through his speech (pg. 10): "I should have stated before that..."
In The House of Seven Gables Nathaniel Hawthorne utilizes the conversational approach perhaps the most overtly of any of the three authors, at times
situating the narration in the first person plural, which thereby has the effect of drawing an assumed commonality between the reader and the party of
the narrator. Indeed his use of 'we' is scattered through the entire book, as in the passage (pg. 139): "We must not stain our page with any
contemporary scandal, to a similar purport, that may have been whispered against the judge," and the in this passage further on (pg. 139.):
But it is too fruitful a subject, this of hereditary resemblances, –the frequent recurrence of which, in a direct line, is truly unaccountable, when we
consider how large an accumulation of ancestry lies behind every man, at the distance of one or two centuries. We shall only add, therefore, that the
Puritan– so, at least, says chimney–corner tradition, which so often preserves traits of character with marvelous fidelity –was bold, imperious,
relentless, crafty... ...Whether the judge in any degree resembled him, the further progress of our narrative may show.

Titanic Film Analysis
In the early hours of April 15th 1912, the luxury steamship R.M.S Titanic sank during its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic after sideswiping an
iceberg. Of the 2,240 passengers on board, more than 1,500 lost their lives in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. Since its
doomed maiden voyage, Titanic has remained a fixture of public consciousness and popular culture. The most famous example of this is James
Cameron's 1997 film Titanic. This film centres on the fictional love story of characters Jack and Rose, which is intertwined with the chronicle of the
1912 sinking. Following the sinking, several investigations took place, which involved interviewing witnesses and survivors and consulting maritime
experts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a scene in which Rose mentions many first class passengers, including John Jacob Astor, Benjamin Guggenheim, Cosmo Edmund Duff
Gordon and the Countess of Rothes. These people were real passengers on board the Titanic. However, the fact that the central characters to the story
of the film are not real lessens the film's accuracy.
Throughout the film, Cameron also demonstrates the differences between classes on board the Titanic. One of the clearest differences between classes
is the contrast of their living quarters. The first class quarters of character Rose are in the suites B52–B56. These suites featured in the film have many
similarities with a photo of suite B58 of the Titanic, which shows that Cameron researched this aspect fairly thoroughly. The first class suites are
extremely ornate, with detailed interior designs and soft furnishings. The suite was also made up of several rooms, including a bedroom, sitting room
and private promenade. Third class rooms are also displayed in the film. These rooms consisted of two bunk beds and a small sink. Compared to the
first class suites, these rooms were unadorned and had no storage space. This information is consistent with photographs of the original Titanic, which
increases Cameron's accuracy. Another area of life on board the Titanic which represents the class differences is recreation. According to the

How Did Rockefeller And Standard Oil Illustrate The Limits...
1. With reference to the levels and spheres of corporate power, Standard Oil changed society if a number of ways especially legally, economically and
technologically. Legally, laws have been set not because of Rockefeller, making it illegal to grow and dominate the way he did. Economically and
technologically, Standard Oil employed a lot of people and helped create or boost industries that used oil, which in turn created more jobs. I think,
although his tactics were ruthless at times, he still kept with the social contract at the time because I feel I affected more people in a positive way than
it did a negative.
2. The story of Rockefeller and Standard Oil illustrates the limits of business power because he exceeded the limits to crush his competitors and force
them out of business. Rockefeller had power over individuals, the economy, culture, technology, politics and the environment, this helped him build his
monopoly to what it was. I think the theory best illustrated through this example would be the dominance theory because he abused his power and

Yes,John D. Rockefeller did act unethically at times, especially when it came to his competition. He would either buy out competitors or drive them
out of business, but at the time it wasn't illegal or unethical to create a monopoly. By today's standards, he would be in big legal trouble for his
unethical ways of doing business. I think he was able to be a devout Christian and a ruthless monopolist at the same time because he kept both entities
separated. Since there weren't as many regulations at the time, in his eyes his ruthless ways were more strategic advantages. Yes there is a
contradiction between his personal ethics and business ethics, because he was a generous man, unlike Jacob Astor, and gave to charities, but he grew

19th Century American Egalitarianism
During the 19th century many people began to think seriously about equality between each other, and the belief that a person should earn their place
/position rather than inheriting it. These concepts led to the egalitarian ideology. Between the years 1829 and 1850 Americans developed the beliefs
and ideals of an egalitarian society. These beliefs had a tremendous effect on the lives of Americans who lived during these times, but also challenged
future generations to struggle with the paradoxes of the egalitarian creed.
Egalitarianism is a system of thought that favors equality for all. People in an egalitarian society don't permit inherited positions or authority; rather

The political face of egalitarianism was Andrew Jackson. Born to poor Scots–Irish colonial origins on the Carolina border in 1767, Jackson became a

Who: Ship was created by White Star Liner. The architect was Thomas Andrews. Around 2,200 people were boarded on the ship. Edward John Smith

What:
The construction of the RMS Titanic started on March 31, 1909 in Belfast, North Ireland and cost $7.5 million. The man who designed it was a
naval architect named Thomas Andrews. The ship was built to be the world's largest passenger steamship, along with two other ships, the Olympic
and Britanic. Although the ship has always been known to many as unsinkable, it was actually never supposed to be advertised like that. Extra
measures were put into the ship to insure safety, for example, if four watertight compartments out of the 16 were flooded, the ship would still stay
afloat. Even though all these precautions were made, who would have ever thought that a single iceberg could cause such a huge devastation. The
ship set sail on April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England and on its way to New York. The total passengers were around 2,200 people, including a
crew of around 900. The passengers were divided into certain classes depending on what kind of ticket they paid for, with first class being the most

Did you know that the fourth smokestack on the Titanic was fake, and that is was made just for looks? Thomas Andrews, the Titanic's architect,
thought instead of having three smokestacks that having four would raise public interest. But when the Titanic was sinking, the fake smokestack fell
on people and instantly killed them. The Titanic was made for luxury and had succeeded but all of the effort was wasted when all of the items became
dead weight at the bottom of the sea. All the work and effort was lost when the Titanic struck theiceberg. The Titanic was designed to be the best but
lost when it sunk. After the horrible tragedy nothing was considered unsinkable anymore but the French claimed that one of their ships was unsinkable.

NBC News reports a letter that was discovered after the Titanic went down, still covered in stains from the Atlantic, was sold for the record setting

The note was written on Titanic "on–board" stationary from first–class passenger Alexander Oskar Holverson, to his mother the day before the the
world's largest ocean liner at that time sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
In the note, recovered from the man's body, he tells his mother to plan on his arrival, adding a now chilling warning in:
"If all goes well we will arrive in New York Wednesday A.M."

The Controversing Of Titanic : The Sinking Of The Titanic
Jaden Prudhomme Mrs. Burrow English 10/25/17 Sinking of the Titanic On April 15th, 1912 the Titanic collided with an iceberg that ripped the
ships hull in several places. The construction of the ship was one of the most innovative ship built in the world. Over the course of two and a half
hours the ship ripped in two places and sunk. The Titanic carried two thousand two hundred and twenty four people, only seven hundred and ten
escaped in the lifeboats, and one thousand five hundred and seventeen people died in the icy water that night. Over ninety percent of the second class
men perished that night. The captain of the ship, Edward J. Smith, had a background that makes you wonder if he should have been captain of the
titanic (History professors). The Titanic was coined the unsinkable ship for a reason and the sinking of the Titanic was a perfect storm of events that
had to happen for it to sink. The designer of the Titanic, Thomas Andrews, designed the ship he made the hull of the ship have sixteen separate
watertight compartments, so that if the shell of the boat was compromised the watertight compartments would not let it be detrimental to the ship, and
in the worst case they would just allow the ship to sink at a very slow pace giving the occupants plenty of time to escape safely. A major flaw in the
construction of the compartments was that the compartments had no lid to them, so they were no where near waterproof, "essentially they were like a
jar without a lid". When

Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener"
The narrator states fairly early on in Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" that both he and Bartleby are "sons of Adam" (55). The phrase plays
on a double entendre, referring to both the Calvinist Biblical Eden and to the view of America as the "new Eden." Many recent critics have traced the
biblical aspects of this and other elemen ts of the story, claiming the character of Bartleby as a Christ–figure, and as such carries out the role of a
redeemer.1 The story, however, is not Bartleby's, but rather the narrator's. "Bartleby" is simultaneously a biography about a scriven er and an

Fur Industry's Effect on Society
The fur trading industry played a major role in the development of the United States and Canada for more than 300 years. The fur trade began in the
1500's as an exchange between Indians and Europeans. The Indians traded furs for such goods as tools and weapons. Beaver fur, which was used in
Europe to make felt hats, became the most valuable of these furs. The fur trade prospered until the mid–1800, when fur–bearing animals became scarce
and silk hats became more popular than felt hats made with beaver. Traders and trappers explored much of North America in search of fur. They built
trading posts in the wilderness, and settlements grew up around many of these posts. Some of these settlements later became such major cities as
Detroit, New Orleans, and St. Louis in the United States; and Edmonton, Montreal, Quebec, and Winnipeg in Canada.
Also as a result of the Fur trade, the beaver population depleted, Indian trappers became debilitated, tribal cultures buckled under the pressure of new
economic motives, tools and values. Consequently, since production fell within an area, the traders moved and settlers moved in developing farms and
towns. The Indians in that area were either killed or moved by the government.

What Is The Working Class In Bartleby The Scrivener
Herman Melville's short story, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" was written in the mid–nineteenth century, during a time when economic revolutions swept
across Europe and class riots erupted in New York. Inspired by this environment, Melville depicts the working class as laborers struggling to survive
the game of life and achieve their goals. The working class possesses a very hectic and repetitive life that often leads to unhappiness. This is
demonstrated in the office where Bartleby and his coworkers, Turkey, Nippers, and Ginger Nut work. They all exhibit signs of depression, they all
appear easily bothered, and they all possess an odd and unique quality. The context of the story and the environment in which it was written encourages

During the mid–1840s to 1850s the political climate of New York was driven by hostility between the upper and lower classes. This has led to an
outbreak of labor riots (Foley 90). The most prominent of these riots occurred in 1849, called the Astor Place Riots. These riots began as a dispute
between two actors, Edwin Forrest and Charles Macready, but quickly escalated into a class struggle between the lower class which mostly supported
Forrest, and the upper classes, who supported Macready.1 Although these events are not introduced in "Bartleby, the Scrivener", they are arguably
important to the genesis of Melville's short story because he resided only a few blocks away from the theater. Incidentally, Melville was a follower of
Macready; so in the context of the riot, he allied himself with the upper class (Foley 102). These events are important to understand because they help to

Karl Behr: The Rivalry Of The Titanic
"To our mind the idea of the Titanic sinking was preposterous."– Karl Behr, a passenger on the Titanic. To everyone who had been involved in the
construction and designing of the Titanic she was truly unsinkable. The story of the Titanic began with a rivalry, includes her first voyage, and includes
some notable people.
The Titanic was built for many reasons, such as comfort, luxury, and safety. She was designed by Thomas Andrews, managing director of Harland &
Wolff's design department. The idea to build the grandest vessel of the twentieth century started as a conversation among friends in July of 1907 (AT).
Joseph Bruce Ismay, the chairmen of the White Star Line was having dinner with his good friend and colleague, William Pirrie, who was the
managing director of Harland & Wolff. (AT) They were discussing shipbuilding and naval developments of the future. Eventually one of the men
brought up their rival company, Cunard, which was receiving much attention for their flagship, Mauretania. This ship had been awarded the Blue
Ribband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1907 (AT). They had never cared about their speed crossing the ocean; they believed that a
trip should be enjoyed and not rushed. Now ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
a ship named Caronia sent Titanic a message using the Marconi system, Morse Code, claiming to have seen an iceberg. Not even three hours later at
11:20 another ship, Amerika, also reported an iceberg warning. These warnings were ignored or simply were not passed on the bridge because the ship
continued traveling at almost full speed. Another message arrived, this time from Noordam at 11:40, reporting that there was "much ice"(TT). The
Titanic maintained their speed, trying to beat the record that the White Star's rival had set, and risked all of their lives. Captain Smith and everyone else
on the ship believed that since the Titanic was supposedly unsinkable that nothing, not even an iceberg, could sink

Who Is Vignette In My America

  • 1. Who Is Vignette In My America Vignette/Story/Anecdote #1 (Retold by Louis Adamic in his book called My America): "In a voice strangely old for her age, the girl said: 'Excuse me, mister, but we have no eats in our house and my mother she said I should take my brother before we go to school and ring a doorbell in some house'–she swallowed heavily and took a deep breath–'and ask you to give us...something...to eat'...He had heard that kids were ringing doorbells and asking for food in the Bronx, in Harlem and in Brooklyn, but he had not really believed it" (7). This excerpt shows that the Depression greatly affected people, leading them to behave in ways they probably wouldn't have in normal instances, in this case, a young girl and her brother are begging for food at strangers' homes based on her mother's direction. However, they aren't the only ones, as Adamic wrote that he had heard about children like the girl and her brother, in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn, three major cities. ... Before long he quit with the explanation: 'I didn't finish until five o'clock and by the time I got uptown it was six. And then I had to get up early the next morning.' At a later date Astor was employed briefly by a shipping firm, and when he quit this second job, he commented: 'I have discovered that work interferes with leisure.' He was representative of that leisure class which Morgan felt must be maintained to save civilization" (13). Even though the Depression affected everyone, the degrees which people were affected varied based on a variety of factors, especially social status. This excerpt shows that while many poor people struggled to find jobs, which they would use to take care of themselves and their families, some rich people were not only to find jobs, they didn't value the work as they believed it interrupted their free ... • 2. Mountain Men from the North American Rock Mountains Mountain men were most common in the North American Rocky Mountains from about 1810 through the 1880s (with a peak population in the early 1840s). Approximately 3,000 mountain men ranged the mountains between 1820 and 1840, the peak beaver–harvesting period. While there were many free trappers, most mountain men were employed by major fur companies. The life of a company man was almost militarized. The men had mess groups, hunted and trapped inbrigades and always reported to the head of the trapping party. This man was called a "boosway", a bastardization of the French term bourgeoisie. He was the leader of the brigade and the head trader. Donald Mackenzie, representing the North West Company, held a Rendezvous in the Boise RiverValley in 1819.[2] The rendezvous system was later implemented by William Henry Ashley of theRocky Mountain Fur Company, whose company representatives would haul supplies to specific mountain locations in the spring, engage in trading with trappers, and bring pelts back to communities on the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in the fall. Ashley sold his business to the outfit of Jackson and Sublette. He continued to earn revenue by selling that firm their supplies. This system of rendezvous with trappers continued when other firms, particularly the American Fur Company owned by John Jacob Astor, entered the field. The annual rendezvous was often held at Horse Creek on the Green River, now called the Upper Green River Rendezvous Site, near present–day ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the unique parts that Melville uses that go on the storyteller's mindset towards Bartleby is style. The movie, released in 1997, was a worldwide film industry hit because of the fact that the director gave measure up to significance to history, fiction and sentiment. John Jacob Astor was a man that had absolute power during his era and used his power and wealth to benefit himself and not the "social fabric of society". Astor lived during the time of a post–revolutionary America which allowed him to build a monopolist empire with little restraint from government or society. Starting out in American as a young German immigrant, John Jacob Astor became involved in the fur trading business "without ever having set a trap" (Stokesbury) and eventually built a fur trading company that extended across the United States and into Canada and made him the richest man in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was the "personification of monopoly, determined to rule or ruin," wrote historian Hiram Martin Chittenden in 1903. "And he was thoroughly hated even by those who respected his power" (Crossen). The issue arises should one person be able to control that much power and isn't held accountable for the use of that power to society? One complicated issue of the American Fur Company reign was its impact on the expansion of the United States westward. It strongly influenced the history of the west, not only making way for permanent settlements but by also opening the Great Lakes commercial fishing, steamboat transportation, and trade in that area (Stokesbury). But was the benefit derived from this westward expansion justified by the "extraction" that took place against its stakeholders or those it affected? Is injustice every justified? III.Analysis of Issues Astor, in his desire for more money and greater profit, completely disregarded the needs of the people his actions affected. This lack of social responsibility was the American Fur Company's worst offense. His was constantly looking for ways to improve his financial bottom line. Whatever means were needed to increase his company's hold on the American fur trading industry was permissible. The skip was completely sunk two hours later and more than 1500 passengers and crew members died. Over time we have accounted and collected many relics and artifacts from the wreckage, everything from watches to letters. At an auction in England, a tragic sea–stained letter was sold after being found on the body of a Titanic victim. It was one of the last known messages to have survived the sinking ship, written by a first–class passenger Alexander Oskar Holverson. It was written on the ships stationary to the passengers' mother on April 13, 1912, after the ship embarked from Southampton, England. The letter is said to be the most important ... In plotting this strategy, England was counting on the well known passion among American women for tea to force consumption. • 11. Herman Melville's Story, Bartleby, the Scrivener Essay In Herman Melville's short story, Bartleby, the Scrivener, the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is constantly changing, the narrator's attitude is conveyed through the author's use of literary elements such as; diction–descriptive and comical, point of view–first person, and tone–confusion and sadness. One of the literary elements that Melville uses that convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is diction. The author's diction in this short story is very descriptive and is also slightly comical. One of the ways this is used is when the author gently mocks the narrator by having him expose his flaws through his own words. Diction is just one of the literary elements used in this short story which convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby. Another literary element that is used to convey the narrator's attitude towards Bartleby is through point of view. In Bartleby, the Scrivener the point of view that is used is that of first person narration. By Melville's use of first person narration it allows us to get close to Bartleby but still be confused and in awe of him and since we see him through the eyes of his employer we can quickly identify with the narrator's confusing feelings over Bartleby. An example of this appears on page 127 in paragraph 6; "I sat awhile in perfect silence, rallying my stunned faculties. Immediately it occurred to me that my ears had deceived me, or Bartleby had entirely misunderstood my meaning. I repeated my request in the clearest tone I could assume; but in quite as clear a one came the previous reply, "I would prefer not to." Here Bartleby has just refused orders from his boss who sits at his desk stunned at wheat he has just heard. This is not the only time throughout the story in which Bartleby does this and always with the same words; "I would prefer not to" which only frustrates and confuses the narrator. • 12. How Does Bartleby The Scrivener Relate To Capitalism Herman Melville's tale "Bartleby, The Scrivener" intentionally reinforces the idea of capitalism. Melville exposes this aspect in his work by the behavior that is conducted by the lawyer towards his employees and at the end by the death of Bartleby. Working in a capitalist society, the employees end up becoming dehumanized by the upper class. The upper class looks at them as tools or aide devices. The employees are available to help aide in the boss's success. Capitalist people are wealthy individuals whom use money to invest in trade in order to gain a profit. In the tale "Bartleby, The Scrivener" the lawyer's behavior proves that the story reinforces capitalist ideas. The unnamed lawyer is a business lawyer whom deals with the stocks and bonds of other wealthy individuals. At first I find it interesting that the lawyer remains unnamed. In truth they were nicknames, mutually conferred upon each other by my three clerks, and were deemed expressive of their respective persons or characters." The lawyer is considered by others as "an eminently safe man" because his job, lifestyle, and demeanor are not flashy or risky at all. For example, his job as a lawyer is to work with bonds and mortgages not on high profile murders. 3. • 15. The Tragedy Of The Titanic Because of a little known film, many people assume that they know the harrowing stories of the tragic tale of the Titanic. But quite often, those harrowing stories of survival and demise are told from a man's perspective. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that only "19%" of the male passengers and crew survived the shipwreck while "75%" of the female passengers and crew lived, or maybe it is because the coverage of the tragedy and inquiries into the global disaster were mainly presented from the male perspective (Henderson). Whatever the reason, primary sources regarding female passengers are seemingly harder to come across compared to male–centric news stories, inquiry testimonies, and journals. Even after finding a select number of primary sources featuring women, the number of those related to first–class women compared to third–class women is alarmingly insufficient. Why is it that an already misrepresented class must be subjected to class exclusion? Sexism and classism for the women aboard the Titanic continued long after the ship established its watery grave. Fight or flight is a dilemma that nearly every passenger aboard the Titanic must have contemplated once they learned the fate of the magnificent ocean liner. • 18. Self-representation in William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe... The stories William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe and Bartleby, the Scrivener by Herman Melville are useful examples to discuss the difficulties of self–representation. While the narrator in Poe's tale begs us to "let me call myself, for the present, William Wilson" the complex self–representation here is also prevalent in the heart of Melville's story. West's Encyclopedia of American Law tells us that "courts usually discourage self –representation ...even attorneys are well advised to hire another attorney." The same problems with self–representation occur in literature. By associating with Astor, an individual known for the ruining of other's lives through mortgage foreclosures, the narrator aligns himself with the reputation of a sinner – even though he claims to have "prudence" and "method" as qualities; clearly, there is nothing prudent or straightforward in the actions of Astor, who coldly took the money of those who needed it most. Though he considers Astor to be a great man, and takes his compliments highly, it shows that the narrator's views of greatness are completely opposite to popular opinion. He thinks that by representing himself in this way – as a man favoured by a famous lawyer– he will appear impressive and integral. Unfortunately, for him, this actually works to the complete opposite effect on the audience of the period. • 20. What Is The Difference Between Beowulf And The Wanderer Time is something that humanity has not been able to conquer. Specifically, John Niles says that "time and an indifferent fate blot out even the most glorious of human achievements." He means that one person's accomplishments and material rewards will eventually be forgotten over time and thus mean nothing. This concept of time as an eraser can be seen in both Beowulf and "The Wanderer" where the past is diminished into a shadow of what it once was before eventually being forgotten. In Beowulf, there are many instances where the poet will convey how ephemeral a man's achievements in life can be after he is taken by death. Beowulf tells Hrothgar, "For every one of us, living in this world/ means waiting for our end. Let whoever can/ win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, / that will be his best and only bulwark" (Beowulf Ln 1386–9). Beowulf says that glory won in life only matters to the warrior after he is dead, and no amount of riches or wealth can help him in the afterlife. The warrior fades from the cultural memory until he is totally forgotten. Hrothgar reminds Beowulf of this later in the poem, "Do not give way to pride./ For a brief while your strength is in bloom/ but it fades quickly...and death will arrive, / dear warrior, to sweep you away" (Beowulf Ln 1760–8). Hrothgar warns Beowulf that his strength and prowess will not last long and when they fail, so too will his legend fade over time. The king says that Beowulf should focus on more spiritual rewards than material ones since the material gains will eventually wither or be no help to him in the afterlife. After death, time and fate will take away his legend and then his achievements will be meaningless. At the end of the poem, Beowulf speaks his last words to Wiglaf as he realizes what death has done to his clan. "You are the last of us, the only one left/ of the Waegmundings. Fate swept us away,/ sent my whole brave high–born clan/ to their final doom," (Beowulf Ln 2813–6). Fate sent death to Beowulf's clan and with his death, the clan will fall into obscurity over time and eventually be forgotten. The Beowulf poet shows in many places how easy it is for death, and through it time and fate, to wipe out any trace of man's achievements. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the film, Cameron also demonstrates the differences between classes on board the Titanic. One of the clearest differences between classes is the contrast of their living quarters. The first class quarters of character Rose are in the suites B52–B56. These suites featured in the film have many similarities with a photo of suite B58 of the Titanic, which shows that Cameron researched this aspect fairly thoroughly. The first class suites are extremely ornate, with detailed interior designs and soft furnishings. The suite was also made up of several rooms, including a bedroom, sitting room and private promenade. Third class rooms are also displayed in the film. These rooms consisted of two bunk beds and a small sink. Compared to the first class suites, these rooms were unadorned and had no storage space. Where: Left from Southaptom, England, and was on its way to New York. Made stops in Cherbourg, France and sailed to Queenstown(now known as Cobh), Ireland. Sank in the North Atlantic. Who: Ship was created by White Star Liner. The architect was Thomas Andrews. Around 2,200 people were boarded on the ship. Edward John Smith was the appointed captain. What: The construction of the RMS Titanic started on March 31, 1909 in Belfast, North Ireland and cost $7.5 million. The man who designed it was a naval architect named Thomas Andrews. The ship was built to be the world's largest passenger steamship, along with two other ships, the Olympic and Britanic. Although the ship has always been known to many as unsinkable, it was actually never supposed to be advertised like that. Extra measures were put into the ship to insure safety, for example, if four watertight compartments out of the 16 were flooded, the ship would still stay afloat. Even though all these precautions were made, who would have ever thought that a single iceberg could cause such a huge devastation. The ship set sail on April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England and on its way to New York. The total passengers were around 2,200 people, including a crew of around 900. The passengers were divided into certain classes depending on what kind of ticket they paid for, with first class being the most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thomas Andrews, the Titanic's architect, thought instead of having three smokestacks that having four would raise public interest. But when the Titanic was sinking, the fake smokestack fell on people and instantly killed them. The Titanic was made for luxury and had succeeded but all of the effort was wasted when all of the items became dead weight at the bottom of the sea. All the work and effort was lost when the Titanic struck theiceberg. The Titanic was designed to be the best but lost when it sunk. After the horrible tragedy nothing was considered unsinkable anymore but the French claimed that one of their ships was unsinkable. They were soon tested and failed when ... The note was written on Titanic "on–board" stationary from first–class passenger Alexander Oskar Holverson, to his mother the day before the the world's largest ocean liner at that time sunk to the bottom of the ocean. In the note, recovered from the man's body, he tells his mother to plan on his arrival, adding a now chilling warning in: "If all goes well we will arrive in New York Wednesday A.M." • 32. The Controversing Of Titanic : The Sinking Of The Titanic Jaden Prudhomme Mrs. Burrow English 10/25/17 Sinking of the Titanic On April 15th, 1912 the Titanic collided with an iceberg that ripped the ships hull in several places. The construction of the ship was one of the most innovative ship built in the world. Over the course of two and a half hours the ship ripped in two places and sunk. The Titanic carried two thousand two hundred and twenty four people, only seven hundred and ten escaped in the lifeboats, and one thousand five hundred and seventeen people died in the icy water that night. Over ninety percent of the second class men perished that night. The captain of the ship, Edward J. Smith, had a background that makes you wonder if he should have been captain of the titanic (History professors). The Titanic was coined the unsinkable ship for a reason and the sinking of the Titanic was a perfect storm of events that had to happen for it to sink. The designer of the Titanic, Thomas Andrews, designed the ship he made the hull of the ship have sixteen separate watertight compartments, so that if the shell of the boat was compromised the watertight compartments would not let it be detrimental to the ship, and in the worst case they would just allow the ship to sink at a very slow pace giving the occupants plenty of time to escape safely. A major flaw in the construction of the compartments was that the compartments had no lid to them, so they were no where near waterproof, "essentially they were like a jar without a lid". When ... Herman Melville's Bartleby, the Scrivener Essay Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" The narrator states fairly early on in Herman Melville's "Bartleby, the Scrivener" that both he and Bartleby are "sons of Adam" (55). The phrase plays on a double entendre, referring to both the Calvinist Biblical Eden and to the view of America as the "new Eden." Many recent critics have traced the biblical aspects of this and other elemen ts of the story, claiming the character of Bartleby as a Christ–figure, and as such carries out the role of a redeemer.1 The story, however, is not Bartleby's, but rather the narrator's. Fur Industry's Effect on Society The fur trading industry played a major role in the development of the United States and Canada for more than 300 years. The fur trade began in the 1500's as an exchange between Indians and Europeans. The Indians traded furs for such goods as tools and weapons. Beaver fur, which was used in Europe to make felt hats, became the most valuable of these furs. The fur trade prospered until the mid–1800, when fur–bearing animals became scarce and silk hats became more popular than felt hats made with beaver. Traders and trappers explored much of North America in search of fur. They built trading posts in the wilderness, and settlements grew up around many of these posts. Some of these settlements later became such major cities as Detroit, New Orleans, and St. Louis in the United States; and Edmonton, Montreal, Quebec, and Winnipeg in Canada. Also as a result of the Fur trade, the beaver population depleted, Indian trappers became debilitated, tribal cultures buckled under the pressure of new

  • 39. What Is The Working Class In Bartleby The Scrivener Herman Melville's short story, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" was written in the mid–nineteenth century, during a time when economic revolutions swept across Europe and class riots erupted in New York. Inspired by this environment, Melville depicts the working class as laborers struggling to survive the game of life and achieve their goals. The working class possesses a very hectic and repetitive life that often leads to unhappiness. This is demonstrated in the office where Bartleby and his coworkers, Turkey, Nippers, and Ginger Nut work. They all exhibit signs of depression, they all appear easily bothered, and they all possess an odd and unique quality. During the mid–1840s to 1850s the political climate of New York was driven by hostility between the upper and lower classes. This has led to an outbreak of labor riots (Foley 90). The most prominent of these riots occurred in 1849, called the Astor Place Riots. These riots began as a dispute between two actors, Edwin Forrest and Charles Macready, but quickly escalated into a class struggle between the lower class which mostly supported Forrest, and the upper classes, who supported Macready.1 Although these events are not introduced in "Bartleby, the Scrivener", they are arguably important to the genesis of Melville's short story because he resided only a few blocks away from the theater. Incidentally, Melville was a follower of Macready; so in the context of the riot, he allied himself with the upper class (Foley 102). To everyone who had been involved in the construction and designing of the Titanic she was truly unsinkable. The story of the Titanic began with a rivalry, includes her first voyage, and includes some notable people. The Titanic was built for many reasons, such as comfort, luxury, and safety. She was designed by Thomas Andrews, managing director of Harland & Wolff's design department. The idea to build the grandest vessel of the twentieth century started as a conversation among friends in July of 1907 (AT). Joseph Bruce Ismay, the chairmen of the White Star Line was having dinner with his good friend and colleague, William Pirrie, who was the managing director of Harland & Wolff. (AT) They were discussing shipbuilding and naval developments of the future. Eventually one of the men brought up their rival company, Cunard, which was receiving much attention for their flagship, Mauretania. This ship had been awarded the Blue Ribband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1907 (AT).
