Program Description: Black box. The back room. Behind closed doors. Such is the life of a Technical Services department. The literal and figurative disconnect between TS and the rest of the library can cause confusion and misinformation among library staff which, in turn, decreases the quality of service the library provides to its patrons. How can we use technology to overcome this disconnect? Many librarians have been successful using LibGuides as a tool to disseminate information from librarians to students and researchers. At Miami University, the TS department decided to experiment by creating a LibGuide to exchange information between TS and other library staff. By incorporating the department s WordPress blog, Google forms and spreadsheets, and RSS feeds into the LibGuide, we have created a place for dynamic interchange of essential information among library staff. The TS department uses the LibGuide to distribute information about our departmental policies and
procedures, as well as e-resource issues and statistics. All library staff can access this information as well as interact with TS staff by using the LibGuide to submit OPAC error reports, e-resource access problems, and report requests. This presentation will explore the planning, building, and implementation of the LibGuide and its evolution since its launch. There will be discussion on the pros and cons of the approaches tried, and on the considerations a department must take into account before building an online presence for intra-library communications.

Faculty members across the Sciences & Engineering agree: the e-resources of the library are used more heavily today than their print counterparts were fifteen years ago. Learn how one library has rediscovered relevance to its academic communities by removing over half of the printed collections from the physical space.
The DeLaMare Library was the "beautiful library", with impeccable collections, located in a historic building at the crossroads of the departments it serves on the university campus, and had undergone a complete retrofit and remodel in 1997; yet 12 years later, students were only occasionally seen browsing its collections, with faculty only dropping by to put materials on course reserve. This paper is a case study of how the library, after in-depth analysis of holdings and close observation of end-user patterns, made seemingly radical changes that have resulted in an over five-fold increase in gate count in less than two years; rather than a quiet repository of books, the library has become a hotbed of learning and knowledge creation, with students and faculty driving the need to more than double the number of computer workstations and library open hours. Details shared will include numerous low to no-cost ideas that have proven effective in front-line advocacy for the Science & Engineering Library, and enabled the library to meet the increased demand without corresponding increases in library staff.
In a debate between Jenny Robins, professor, and Floyd Pentlin, LMS retired and madman, these slides present the side of the debate questioning an over reliance on database information as the source of vetted, edited information without considering some of the weaknesses of pre-digested information which isn't always as accurate as we would like to believe.

Convergence Consulting Group supported the RNC in migrating their data from legacy on prem. systems to a Microsoft Azure Cloud data warehouse. The RNC and its partners can now utilize Microsoft Power BI to expose the data from anywhere with a few simple clicks. See some examples of recent polling data in the presentation. Questions? Weather is a leading factor in customer behavior, so why don't more businesses take weather into account when forecasting customer purchases? In this presentation, Ahmed Sherif walks you through a live example of integrating weather data into reservation data using Python and IBM Cognos Analytics to predict customer cancellations for a restaurant. This same process can be applied to any forward looking transaction dat analysis.

The title of this workshop is a reference to The Artist Is Present, a performance art piece by Marina Abramovic. Marina spent months at MOMA sitting silently across from a nearly endless series of museum visitors, some of whom broke into tears.
The notion of presence is a critical idea for those of us in user experience. At the risk of sounding like Yoda, presence is tied to self-knowing. During ten years of writing, lecturing and coaching on “interviewing users”, many of the questions that Steve Portigal receives are about controlling or influencing another person’s behavior. Yet these interactions with others are really about ourselves, what’s inside us, who we are.
Therapists, as part of their education, must go through therapy themselves. They are expected to achieve a certain level of insight about themselves — their biases, their discomforts, and so on. While we are not therapists, we go out and study people without that level of self-insight!
A lack of self-insight sometimes manifests itself as passion, commitment, or being driven by a mission. While those have their place, it’s easy to become blinded by what we can’t let ourselves see. Sometimes this shows up as discomfort at the micro level, when we react to something a user might tell us about themselves; sometimes it’s a macro issue, when we’re uncomfortable with people who hold different values, preferences, or beliefs than ourselves. And it crescendos as know-it-all douchebaggery, when we think our job is to tell other people what’s best for them — when phrases like “frictionless sharing” fall from our lips as naturally as “what time is dinner?”
In this workshop, you’ll tap into a new level of personal authenticity to unlock a powerful boon. Together, we’ll explore this point of view and participate in a range of exercises to learn more about these ideas — and about ourselves.

Therapists, as part of their education, must go through therapy themselves. They are expected to achieve a certain level of insight about themselves – their biases, their discomforts, and so on. While we are not therapists, we go out and study people without that level of self-insight! A lack of self-insight sometimes manifests itself as passion, commitment, or being driven by a mission. While those have their place, it’s easy to become blinded by what we can’t let ourselves see. Sometimes this shows up as discomfort at the micro level, when we react to something a user might tell us about themselves; sometimes it’s a macro issue, when we’re uncomfortable with people who hold different values, preferences, or beliefs than ourselves. And it crescendos as know-it-all douchebaggery, when we think our job is to tell other people what’s best for them – when phrases like “frictionless sharing” fall from our lips as naturally as “what time is dinner?”
In this interactive talk we will delve into the concepts of presence and mindfulness and develop an understanding of how this informs how you engage with the world around you, as a designer, a professional, and a person.

This presentation combines highlights from two 2014 ER&L presentations: Never Mind I’ll Just Buy It: Why Users Won’t Jump Through Your Hoops and DDA 2.0: Evidence-Based Selection of E-Books.
Via an entertaining compare and contrast, this presentation explores disconnects between e-books via library PDA and third-party platforms compared to “real world” resources such as Kindle e-books.
Then, the presenter will show how UConn Libraries PDA program is quite successful from an acquisitions perspective, but access to DRM-encased e-books is a less than ideal user experience and share how UConn Libraries is working to provide access to thousands of DRM-free e-books while only purchasing titles with highest use.
The purpose is to illustrate how library resources and commercial resources aim to meet user needs in radically different ways, and how libraries can fix it.

A talk I gave Sept 8, 2010 on major technology trends & their impact on the library user during my interview as a candidate for the position of Head of Digital User Experience at IU Bloomington Libraries.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
