On July 6, 2021, MariaDB 10.6 became generally available (production ready). This presentation focuses on the most important aspects of it as well as the influence it has. Improvements to InnoDB, SYS Schema Adoption, and deprecated variables and engines are all part of this presentation.
This tutorial covers all parallel replication implementation in MariaDB 10.0 and 10.1 and MySQL 5.6, 5.7 and 8.0 (including how it works in Group Replication).
MySQL and MariaDB have different types of parallel replication. In this tutorial, we present the different implementations that allow us to understand their limitations and tuning parameters. We cover how to make parallel replication faster and what to avoid for maximizing its benefits. We also present tests from Booking.com workloads.
Some of the subjects that are covered are group commit and optimistic parallel replication in MariaDB, the parallelism interval of MySQL and its Write Set optimization, and the ?slowing down the master to speed up the slave? optimization.
After this tutorial, you will know everything you need to implement and tune parallel replication in your environment. But more importantly, we will show how you can test parallel replication benefit in a non-disruptive way before deployment.

There are many aspects to managing an RDBMS. Some of these are handled by an experienced DBA, but there are a good many things that any sys admin should be able to take care of if they know what to look for.
This presentation will cover basics of managing Postgres, including creating database clusters, overview of configuration, and logging. We will also look at tools to help monitor Postgres and keep an eye on what is going on. Some of the tools we will review are:
* pgtop
* pg_top
* pgfouine
* check_postgres.pl.
Check_postgres.pl is a great tool that can plug into your Nagios or Cacti monitoring systems, giving you even better visibility into your databases.

Galera Cluster for MySQL vs MySQL (NDB) Cluster: A High Level Comparison Severalnines
Galera Cluster for MySQL, Percona XtraDB Cluster and MariaDB Cluster (the three “flavours” of Galera Cluster) make use of the Galera WSREP libraries to handle synchronous replication.MySQL Cluster is the official clustering solution from Oracle, while Galera Cluster for MySQL is slowly but surely establishing itself as the de-facto clustering solution in the wider MySQL eco-system.
In this webinar, we will look at all these alternatives and present an unbiased view on their strengths/weaknesses and the use cases that fit each alternative.
This webinar will cover the following:
MySQL Cluster architecture: strengths and limitations
Galera Architecture: strengths and limitations
Deployment scenarios
Data migration
Read and write workloads (Optimistic/pessimistic locking)
WAN/Geographical replication
Schema changes

MySQL Database Architectures - InnoDB ReplicaSet & ClusterKenny Gryp
Following MySQL InnoDB Cluster as our first, fully integrated MySQL High Availability solution based on Group Replication, MySQL Shell 8.0.19 includes MySQL InnoDB ReplicaSet which delivers another complete solution, this time based on MySQL Replication.
The basic idea for InnoDB ReplicaSet is to do the same for classic MySQL Replication as InnoDB Cluster did for Group Replication. We take a strong technology that is very powerful but can be complex, and provide an easy-to-use AdminAPI for it in the MySQL Shell.
In just a few easy to use Shell commands, a MySQL Replication database architecture can be configured from scratch including:
Data provisioning using MySQL CLONE, Setting up replication,
Performing manual switchover/failover.
Understanding ProxySQL internals and then interacting with some common features of ProxySQL such as query rewriting, mirroring, failovers, and ProxySQL Cluster

Pass chapter meeting dec 2013 - compression a hidden gem for io heavy databas...Charley Hanania
Compression: a hidden Gem for IO heavy Databases
The limiting factor in most database systems is the ability to read and write data to the IO subsystem.
We're still using storage layouts and methodologies in SQL Server that are a reflection of old spinning media in times gone by.
Until major changes are made to the internal storage layouts, we have "some" hope with options such as data compression, sparse columns and filtered indexes, which not only save space on disk, but also reflect a saving in memory.
In this session we will go over the IO savings technologies presented in SQL Server, and discuss how implementing some of these will assist in your operational performance goals.
Presenter: Charley Hanania, MVP
Charley is Principal Consultant at QS2 AG in Switzerland and has consulted to organisations of all sizes during his extensive career in Database and Platform Consulting.
He's been focussed on SQL Server since v4.2 on OS/2 and with over 15 years of experience in IT he's supported companies in the areas of DB training, development, architecture & administration throughout Europe, America & Australasia.
Communities are Charley's passion and he became active in database communities in the mid 90's, participating in heterogeneous database user groups in Australia. He continues to lead an active role through community events such as Database Days, the European PASS Conference, PASS & the Swiss PASS Chapter.
So, you know how to deploy your code, what about your database? This talk will go through deploying your database with LiquiBase and DBDeploy a non-framework based approach to handling migrations of DDL and DML.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*

What is new in MariaDB 10.6 ?
15. Atomic DDL's
Implementation
In MariaDB 10.6 DDL's are crash-safe.
Ensure tables are consistent and no temporary tables on Disk during crash.
Support all Storage Engine
Uses ddl_recovery.log for tracking.
Track the temporary tables and have backup of .frm files
--log-ddl-recovery ( location of log file )
16. Simulating DDL Recovery :
Load the data using sysbench and try creating an Index. Crash the MySQL during DDL.
Index : CREATE INDEX k_4 ON sbtest. sbtest1;
DDL Recovery log File ( While DDL is on Process )
17. During the crash recovery a ddl_recovery-backup.log is generated at startup.
DDL Recovery log File ( While DDL is on Process )
19. SKIP LOCKED & NOWAIT
Example
SELECT * FROM t FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED;
SELECT * FROM t FOR UPDATE NOWAIT;
It is similar to MySQL 8.0 ( Skip locked and nowait )
Used with "FOR UPDATE"
Helpful in handling locks on Hot tables
Uses The Key Word ( SKIP LOCKED and NOWAIT ).
20. SKIP LOCKED & NOWAIT
Simulating Skip locked and Nowait:
23. OFFSET
FETCH
Returns the ROWS after a specified offset. ( Skip Rows )
Number of ROWS to be returned.
ONLY & WITH TIES Supported ( with Ordering )
SQL OFFSET & FETCH Support

26. Note :
Primary Key can't be made ignored ( invisible ).
Ignored Indexes
An index can be made ignored by the optimizer ( Invisble ).
Keywords "IGNORED" and "NOT IGNORED".
Helpful in dropping the Unused Indexes safely.
The optimizer may depend on the index stats without using them
Re-Creating an index time consuming once dropped.
Ignored Indexes
28. Sys Schema was added in 10.6
More useful in Analysis and Troubleshooting.
Replication Instrumentation ( Performance schema 5.7 )
Assists in Parallel Replication ( Applier )
