The document discusses how robots and AI will not lead to widespread job losses and unemployment as some predictions have warned. It summarizes that:
1) Studies have found a positive correlation between robot adoption in countries and unemployment rates and exports, showing that more robots are actually linked to lower unemployment and stronger economies.
2) Many jobs are difficult to fully automate, such as teachers, athletes, detectives, massage therapists, and clergy.
3) While some jobs may be displaced, new jobs will be created through lower prices increasing demand for goods and services, and the spending and demand created will in turn generate more jobs.

The document discusses several trends related to technology, business, and society that are driving rapid changes including the growth of mobile devices, the internet of things, big data, machine learning, and how these changes impact organizations and require adapting strategies. It notes that many strategic planning sessions fail because they do not sufficiently take into account future trends and capabilities.
The document discusses the potential for an "Un Internet of Things" or IoT network that is not based on IP. It argues that TCP/IP is fundamentally insecure and not suitable for life-critical IoT devices due to issues like spoofing of IP and MAC addresses. Alternative low-power wide area network technologies like LoRa and SigFox are presented as more secure options that could support longer battery life and wider ranges between devices compared to cellular or WiFi networks. The talk advocates for a focus on secure identity and audit trails rather than just convenience when building IoT infrastructure and networks.
2015 07 09 OECD: the future of productivityinnovationoecd
The document discusses the future of productivity and ways to stimulate productivity growth. It notes that productivity growth has slowed across developed economies. While some firms at the global productivity frontier continue to see strong growth, diffusion of productivity gains to other firms is declining. This is widening productivity gaps. The document recommends ways to stimulate diffusion, including through trade integration, reallocating resources more efficiently to more productive firms, and maintaining investment in innovation through public and private research. International cooperation, improving university-industry collaboration, and reviewing innovation policy portfolios are also suggested.

It notes that improvements in processing power, data, algorithms, and funding are fueling advances in AI. While human-level AI may be 50-100 years away, narrow AI is already achieving human-level performance in some tasks. The document outlines some of the societal challenges posed by AI, such as threats to privacy, lack of transparency, issues of trust, and unfair outcomes. It also discusses the potential impacts of AI on the workplace and economy, and argues that Australia needs to be at the forefront of AI development given its economic situation.
Skills: Global Trends, Challenges and OpportunitiesEduSkills OECD
Global trends are presenting both opportunities and challenges for skills development. The kinds of routine jobs that can be easily automated are declining, while jobs requiring social, creative, and analytical skills are growing. Technology is also changing how we work and live, with impacts like rising inequality, slowing productivity growth, and changing skill needs. Developing a wider range of cognitive, social, emotional, and metacognitive skills will help countries and individuals adapt and prosper in this changing environment.
The OECD advises governments on economic, social and technological policies. It recommends strengthening innovation through SMEs by: 1) Promoting entrepreneurship cultures and frameworks that support SMEs. 2) Embedding SMEs in knowledge flows through partnerships and collaboration. 3) Strengthening entrepreneurial human capital through education and training. 4) Improving support for social entrepreneurship through financing, research and incubators.

Thinking outside the cube: Attracting & retaining talentWe are AD
The document discusses attracting and retaining talent in the digital technology industry. It notes that while digital employment is growing, the industry remains male-dominated. Specifically, it summarizes that (1) while digital companies employ over 1.4 million people in the UK, 74% are located outside London and 98% are small businesses, and (2) fully utilizing women's skills in the UK could boost the economy by $15-21 billion annually, but the industry needs to become more appealing and accessible to women.
An Ipsos survey with the World Economic Forum found widespread concern about AI among respondents in 27 countries. More respondents agreed than disagreed that governments’ and companies’ use of AI should be more strictly controlled. Global attitudes did not vary much by age, income, education, or gender, though women were slightly more likely to worry about and support regulation of AI than men. The survey results were presented at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in China.
The document discusses how machine learning has the potential to deliver new value in three ways: by automating manual human tasks, augmenting human capability, and making the impossible possible. It provides examples of companies using technology to automate insurance claims processing, create scent sensors by combining biology and technology, and develop a next generation interface that silently captures commands. The document also examines emerging digital assistant platforms and how technology is transforming various aspects of daily life such as commuting, food, and exercise.
This document discusses how technological changes from the digital revolution are transforming the world of work and presenting challenges. While technology has increased productivity, wages have stagnated in many countries, declining labor's share of GDP. The digital age has greatly benefited consumers but its impact on employment has been more disruptive. The nature of innovation is changing as well, as some new technologies allow automation of tasks previously considered human. This could affect a significant portion of the workforce and risks further widening inequality unless countries take steps to plan for these changes and ensure growth remains inclusive.

Independent Study - College of Wooster Research (2023-2024) FDI, Culture, Glo...AntoniaOwensDetwiler
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

UBI is a fixed amount paid by the government to its
citizens regardless of employment status or wealth.
It is being touted as a possible solution to mass
unemployment via automation.
Pros Cons
It could provide financial security for
all, eliminate the number of house-
holds living below the poverty line.
It could lead to an explosion in
creativity, research and
entrepreneurship.
The cost of implementation
for governments would be
too high.
UBI itself disincentivizes,
potentially leading us down a
path towards economic stagnation.
