Essay About Bharatanatyam
Mind blowing facts about Bharatanatyam
Bharatnatyam dance form is a classical dance form which is immensely popular all over the world and is said to have its origin point in the Tamil
region of South India. There is certain confusion regarding the exact time of origin of this dance form. If we take into consideration various literary
works and ancient manuscripts we can see that this dance form dates back to 2nd century BC. During the early time of the origin of the dance form it
was mainly limited to temple and was regarded as temple dance used to be danced mainly by Deva–Dasis (Servants of God or Temple maiden). This
dance form was considered as a form of worship. Interestingly the name of this dance form was derived from the name Bharata ... Show more content

based on Nataraj avatar of Lord Shiva where he is seen in a Tandava posture.

of Bharatanatyam is said to take shape from the regime of Maratha Ruler Saraboji II which dates back to 19 th century AD. His Tanjore court saw the
shaping of the modern form of this dance form with the help of experts like Poonia Pillai, Chinmayya Pillai, Vadivelu Pillai and Sivanandama Pillai.

Chapter 5 Essay
WORLD MUSIC CHAPTER 5 1. Why does the Indian classical tradition dominate the musical image of South Asia in the west? The classical music of
India has gained most of the attention of outsiders probably due to the colonization era that has brought Indo–European invaders (Aryan Civilization)
into their territory between 2000 and 1500 BCE due to the presence of rich resources. However, Indian music, unlike the communal music of Africa and
Southeast Asia, is individual and often virtuosic and can be both vocal and instrumental. The Hindustani one (North) is more appealing to the Western
society as it is more instrumental based, whereas the Carnatic (south) one is more vocally oriented. Another factor that attracts the Western attention...

Carnatic music is said to have originated in the Karnatak region of south India. On the other hand Hindustani music is said to have originated in
several parts of northern and western India in different times. While Carnatic music is sung and performed in only one style, there are various styles
of singing and performing in Hindustani music. Each style of school is called a 'gharana'. The number of ragas used in Carnatic music is more when
compared to the fewer ragas used in Hindustani music. It is interesting to note that Carnatic music is characterized by the presence of 72–melakarta
raga scheme. Each of the 72 principal ragas is divided into several subordinate ragas. Both the types of music differ in terms of the instruments used in
the playing of music as well. While both types of music use instruments such as violin and flute, Hindustani music extensively employs the use of Tabla
(a kind of drum or a percussion instrument), Sarangi (a stringed instrument), Santoor, Sitar, etc. On the other hand Carnatic music extensively employs
the use of musical instruments such as Veena (a stringed instrument), Mridangam (a percussion instrument), Gottuvadyam, Mandolin, Violin, Flute,

A Brief Look at Bharatanatyam
Introduction
"India's precious heritage of music, drama and dance is one which we must cherish and develop. We must do so not only for our own sake but also for
our contributions to the cultural heritage of mankind. Nowhere is it truer than in the field of art that to sustain means to create. Traditions cannot be
preserved but can only be created afresh. It will be the aim of this Akademi to preserve our traditions by offering them an institutional form..." (Maulana
Azad, 28th January 1953, inauguration of Sangeet Natak Akademi)
India is very rich in the tradition of classical and non–classical dance. It is one of the refined developed systems of dance and is also recorded as far
back as the 9th century, and it was although called the Sadir in the 1900's. The Natya Shastra is one of the oldest surviving texts on stagecraft in the
world and has also been called as the fifth Veda. The other factor which preserved the dance form is the Devadasis (temple dancers) who enjoyed
high status and prosperity and was encouraged by public funds to pursue their arts. Slowly this tradition of the Devadasis fell into disrepute due to
economic and social pressures. Rukmini Devi, a member of the Brahmin family is credited for reviving the art form bringing it back to stage in the
early 1900's. During the initial days of theatre, the artists would mime, the singers/vocalists would sing and the dancer who occupied the central
position would bring out the meaning of the story through hand and

Dance And Religion
Dance is globally presented in religion and culture. Dance has been important for entertainment, rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. In India they
have a god of the dance whose name is Shiva. Shiva is the third God in Hindu triumvirate. Anytime someone is doing a classical Indian dance Shiva is
present. When you are doing a classical Indian dance you learn with one teacher and afterwards you usually have a long term relationship with that
teacher. For hundreds of years Indian dance has been based on sacred text surrounding the inner sanctum within the Hindu temples. Kalanidni

Indian Classical Music Structure And Sets It Apart
What differences Indian classical music structure and sets it apart in the world's classical traditions? Give examples that highlight structural and
conceptual differences. (For example the shruthi or the drone – how vital is it, and what is the philosophy behind it?)
Indian classical music is one of the oldest forms of music in the world. It is rooted in antiquity, with traces of its origin found in areas such as the
ancient religious Vedic hymns, tribal chants, devotional temple music, and folk music. Indian music is melodic in nature, as opposed to Western music
which is harmonic. The most important point to note is that movements in Indian classical music are on a one–note–at–a–time basis. This progression of
sound patterns along time is the most significant contributor to the tune and rhythm of the presentation, and hence to the melody. Indian music can be
further distinguished into two main streams of Hindustani (Northern Indian) and Carnatic (Southern Indian). The origins and fundamental concepts of
both these types of music are the same, although the prime form of music here is the ancient complex patterns of melody called raga merged with Talas
or rhythm that affects energy centres laying emphasis as a tool of meditation for self–realization.
North Indian music, known as Hindustani Sangeet is usually considered to be a mixture of traditional Hindu musical concepts and Persian performance
practice. North Indian classical music sprang from an amalgamation of musical

Some people dream of success while others wake up and work hard at it. ~ Winston Churchill.
It has been a year since I have joined KDA. And this past year this quote has been my motto I live by. I have spent this past year, devoting myself to
practicing and perfecting my dancing skills, and I hope to continue so. I can never get bored with it because there is always room to improve. To me,
dance is more than just a beautiful art form. Dance is me expressing what I cannot always express in words. As I look back on this past year at KDA, I
would consider myself as an inspired dancer.

Music And Dance In India
Throughout Indian culture, music and dance are the most distinguished art form within. The range of musical variety in India expands far beyond
simple melodies to intricately formed classical sagas. India is the seventh biggest country in the world and the 3rd largest in the northern hemisphere.
Of the 29 states, it consists of a population of 1.32 billion citizens. Due to its vastly increasing population, it's culture continues to adapt and thrive
within an ever–changing society. The most vital and key ingredient within any Modern society is the ability to adapt to this tool, this segways
towards a wide variety of different sights and sounds flowing all around the area. Despite the fact that Indian culture is well known for its exotic
animals, foods and much more. It is beloved for their art and music. Shortly after the sweet birth of music, came dance; which originally served a
spiritual purpose and described a spiritual energy that connected its people with several figures within the Hindu religion. It wasn't till around 1960
when dance art forms began turning towards more modern and western themes. In 1899 the first Bollywood short film was screened for the first time,
which planted seeds for pop culture to take root within music and redesigned what Hindi music was and will ever be. In a western society like the
United States, Bollywood takes on the role of squashing the many stereotypes that linger and taint the image that defines what exactly Indian

Bharatanatyam A journey from temples to the proscenium
An introduction
Bharatanatyam is a Sanskrit word, which means the dance of Bharata (India). True to its name, it is one of the oldest and most popular dance forms of
India. It originated in the temples of Southern India and was later codified and documented as a performing art by the Tanjore Quartet. It is now the
most popular Indian classical dance and is appreciated worldwide. Bharatanatyam is a language in itself. Like Sanskrit language, bharatanatyam follows
strict rules and is technically sound. The grammar of the steps is followed rigorously. It is danced to Carnatic music and the mathematical precision of

Many padams (narrative pieces) depicted the love story of a nayak (hero) and a nayika (heroine). In most cases, the nayak was in the form of Lord
Krishna, or Shiva or any other mythological hero. While Shiva was said to be serious, Krishna was full of pathos and love. Thus, the choreographies
mainly concentrated on Sringara rasa (love).
Gradually the devadasi system started getting plagued with several notorious ills. Around this time, it was customary for the Indian people hailing
from royal or aristocratic families to invite a devadasi to a celebration, to sing and dance and perform. The best dancers were invited to the royal
courts to perform, in return which they were provided with a shelter. In this period, the position of the devadasis could be compared to that of an
apsara (celestial nymph) who danced in the courts of the Gods in order to please them. Eventually, the rich men and the aristocrats attracted the
devadasis with good money and luxurious lifestyles and lured them into being their mistresses. The devadasis were easily enticed to the kind of
lifestyle offered to them. Thus, the sringara rasa in their choreographies converted into eroticism and they danced merely to appease the rich men. As
consequence of which, these devadasis who were held at par with the temple priests lost their respect in the society.
By this time, the Europeans had arrived to India. Their

Golden Age
It was when Gods called a council and realized that there was nothing to occupy their time or grab their attention to that they thought of putting an
end to this situation by retelling stories with the help of gestures and motions. And so came about the art of dance and drama into being. All this
happened approximately in the era which is called the Golden Age or Krita Yuga in Indian mythology. The Golden Age lasted for hundreds of
thousands of years and then according to cosmic laws Krita Yuga was replaced by Treta Yuga and everything in the world underwent great changes.
Ideals, morals, ethics were distorted. It is said that the human body is Shiva's damaru (drum). Shiva always carried a drum because it is symbolic of
the rhythm of life. When we run a race or when we're excited or scared, we hear "dhun, dhun, dhun" in our head. This is the rhythm of the body. The
rhythm of the body is not just in the beat of the heart. Every fiber and every pranic nadi in the body has its own... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Music has been a common phenomenon in every culture on this planet and has always been a stepping stone for a spiritual process. Especially with
Indian classical music, it is a possibility of walking you through creation, and when possible, to touch the Creator. In Indian culture, music, dance or
whatever else you did was not entertainment; it was also a spiritual process. In classical music, the way sound is used – the ragas, the tunes, everything
– is such that if you get deeply involved in it, it will bring meditativeness. Classical Indian music has, to a mathematical precision, recognized which
sound can do what. If you know how to use sounds, a proper arrangement of sounds can do incredible things to people and to the situation. There are

Research Paper On Anna Pavlova
How did a seven–year–old girl go from being a ballet enthusiast to one of the greatest ballerinas of all time whose influences are still so evidently felt
today? Anna Pavlova is a famous Russian ballerina who is best known for introducing and popularizing ballet around the world, defying the traditional
expectations of ballerinas and her contribution to the modern pointe shoe. Her love for classical ballet, determination, perseverance, and elegance stole
the hearts of people around the world.
At the age of eight Anna Pavlova, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on 31 January 1881, was amazed by the performance of The Sleeping Beauty at the
Mariinsky Theater and was thereafter determined on becoming a professional ballerina. Despite not having the ideal, strong, muscular and compact
figure of a ballerina at the time, Pavlova was accepted into the Imperial Ballet School in 1891. Pavlova attracted the attention from her teachers and at
the annual graduation performance in 1899, it was announced that Pavlova, after graduating, would join the Imperial Ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre.
Pavlova, with her grace, talent and work ethic, rose through the ranks quickly, she was named coryphГ©e in 1902, premiГЁre danseuse in 1905, and
finally, after her extraordinary performance in Giselle, she was promoted to prima ballerina in 1906.

Nearly five thousand years back flourished India's first major civilisation along the Indus River valley. The twin cities of Mohenjodaro and Harappa
now in Pakistan were ruled by priests and held the rudiments of Hinduism. These civilisations are known to possess a sophisticated lifestyle, a highly
developed sense of aesthetics, an astonishing knowledge of town planning and an undecipherable script language. The Indus civilization at one point
of time extended nearly a million square kilometres across the Indus river valley. It existed at the same time as the ancient civilizations of Egypt and
Sumer but far outlasted them. Surviving for nearly a thousand years the Indus valley civilisation fell to tectonic upheavals in about 1700 BC, which
caused a series of floods.
The coming of the Aryans around 1500 BC, gave the final blow to the collapsing Indus Valley civilisation. At the dawn of Vedic ages the Aryans came
in from the North and spread through large parts of India bringing with them their culture and religious beliefs. The Four Vedas or the important books
of Hinduism were compiled in this period.

The Role Of Women In Bollywood Dance
Bollywood is a dance form originating in India, that has recently been spreading across Western nations and increasing in popularity. I had the
opportunity to take a Bollywood Class at the dance studio where I teach, A Leap Above Dance. While I have a strong dance background in ballet
and jazz, I had never before tried Bollywood. The class had about 15 students, all female, and was taught by Megan Powell, who was a part of the World
Dance Program at BYU, where she had the opportunity to take a course on Indian dance practices. What I witnessed in class, as well as through my
research, has exposed a sexual representation of females within Bollywood dancing. This sexualization can be seen through the costume choices, hip
movements, and the male gaze often featured in Bollywood dances.
Bollywood dance is an art form derived from Indian classical and folk dances that originated in the 1950s's and 60's1. The dance practice involves
fast paced, precise hand movements, each of which has its own unique cultural significance. While many of the hand positions look similar and
were easy for me to mix up, Megan explained that they are very distinct, and it is important to use the correct motion. The word itself comes from a
combination of two names, Bombay (a city in India, now referred to as Mumbai) and Hollywood1. Mumbai hosts what is considered to be the
Hollywood of India, where many of the Bollywood films and dancing occur. It is often considered a film dance, due to the

Bharatanatyam Essay
Bharatanatyam is a dance that is widely popular in India, and especially in the Southern part of India. Bharatanatyam is originated in Tamil Nadu a
southern state in India. Along with basic footwork and hand gestures, Bharatanatyam also has the capacity to tell stories and emote various feelings to
tell a story. The dance stems from a scripture called the Natyashastra, which includes all the guidelines about classical dance and performance
etiquette. According to Sridevi Jagannath, a dance teacher in Cary, North Carolina, and the Director of Laasya School of Dance and Music, "
Bharatanatyam is a dance that connects mind, body, and soul and has the ability to tell a story using expressions called the Navarasas and show
emotions using the mind, body, and soul called Bhavam." In Bharatanatyam, Navarasas and Bhavam play a major role like hand gestures and footwork.
Navarasas are the nine emotions, erotic, humorous, pathetic, terrible, heroic, fearful, odious, wonder, peaceful. In simple words, Bharatanatyam is like
a musical, but incorporates the Jathis, which are items of dance which are about two to three minutes. In Bharatanatyam, dance is not the only thing
you need, but you also need music. Each dance in Bharatanatyam contains, Raga known as the tune of dance and Tala known as the beat or the rhythm
of the dance. In every dance, the Raga and the Tala changes. Six different kinds of Tala. Originally, there are 72 Ragas, but there are always new

Learning Bharatnatyam, An Indian Classical Dance Form
As the music began, I started to move; the pounding of my feet blending in with the melodious sounds of the flute, the ghungaroo(bells) around my
ankles, the mridangham (drums), and the blood rushing into my own heart. With the music and my first movements, the fear of being on stage washes
away and I am focused on my movements and my expressions–using them to tell a story about my culture, my heritage, and me.
Learning Bharatnatyam, an Indian classical dance form, since the age of 5 has taught me perseverance and the importance of hard work

dance and has been reinforced by memorable experiences along the way. One of my earliest experiences involved a childhood friend who battled a
brain tumor for nearly three years before succumbing to her illness. To me, her loss was heightened by a sense of unfairness–she was too young to
have been robbed of her life before she truly had a chance to live. These thoughts followed me through adolescence as my mother also began to face a
variety of health problems. Seeing how much disease and pain robs an individual of their essential nature frightened me and made me feel helpless.
But out of this helplessness, came a strong desire to help and be involved in medicine. I persevered in the study of sciences, volunteering in clinical

Kathak And Indian Culture And Culture
Cultures around the world express themselves in a variety of forms, and some are more well–known then others. It can take the form of both music and
dance, and Indian culture in particular is very popular around the world, especially concerning their types of dance. One dance style is called kathak,
and it is performed in several countries. Kathak is especially important for Indian culture because it is also a way for the Indian diaspora to connect
with their culture and associate with it. As a result, kathak dance is a part of Indian identity, and strongly influences its individuals as well. It has a rich
culture and history, and is performed in a certain format. Kathak also holds lots of meaning, as it associates with both Hinduism and Islam as well. To
begin with, kathak originated in India, and is a North Indian style of dance. It is considered to be a form of abstract dancing, and dancers use lots
of footwork in their performance, which is called nritta (Sanger, 2016). Kathak is one of the major classical forms of Indian dance and is
performed globally, with a huge range of dancers and performances (Chakravorty, 2015). It used to be performed for royalty, and the dancers would
begin their performances by saluting, which was an Islamic tradition called thata (Chakravorty, 2006). It was mostly performed by Muslim women

“Indian Classical Dances; Bharatanatyam the Elite Form”...
There are eight individual and unique classical dances in India. Each has its own distinctive dance movements, make–up, and costumes. The classical
dance forms that have developed in India all have set rules which have been followed traditionally over the years. This set of rules that the classical

eight forms that have succeeded in reaching the conventions of the Natya Shastra are: the Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Kathak, Manipuri,

In these works, there is also evidence of the nature of the technique, the presentation style and the response of the audience"(20). Along with Tamil
sources, Bharatanatyam can also be looked back from another basis, Sanskrit texts. "Sanskrit texts and literature reached Tamil Nadu and the Southern
States fairly early" states Vatsyayan. This meaning that the Bharatanatyam could be tracked back to a form explained in the Natysasastra, and there it
was called Ekharya Lasyanga. This form demonstrates a single dancer performing many roles and "Instead of many actors presenting a dramatic story,
the solo actor presents, though the four types of abhinaya, the particular dominate state (sthayibhava)"(20). As I explained earlier, I feel that
Bharatanatyam has a strong sculpture look to it. This sculptural movements can be looked back to the fifth century A.D. to find evidence of them, "it
has been established from what that the position common to classical dance (margi style) was the ardhamandali with the outturned knees."(20). This
position of the performer bent low with the knees turned out, much like in a squat position, has become a popular symbol in dance styles in Indian
Classical dances today. The basic position has influenced "...styles from Orissa to Gujarat and from Khajuraho to Trivandrum"(20). Vatsyayan goes on

Bharatanatyam, one of eight designated classical dance forms of India.
The culture of India refers to the religions, beliefs, customs, traditions, languages, ceremonies, arts, values and the way of life in India and its people.
India's languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food, and customs differ from place to place within the country. Its culture often labeled as an
amalgamation of these diverse sub–cultures is spread all over the Indian subcontinent and traditions that are several millennia old.[1] Several elements
of India's diverse culture, such as Indian religions, yoga, and Indian cuisine, have had a profound impact across the world. ... Show more content on

There is significant historical discourse in India on the notion, relevance, and the existence and non–existence of God. Dharmakirti, for example, in 7th

Main article: Stereotypes of South Asians
India's diversity has inspired many writers to pen their perceptions of the country's culture. These writings paint a complex and often conflicting picture
of the culture of India.
According to industry consultant Eugene M. Makar, for example, traditional Indian culture is defined by a relatively strict social hierarchy. He also
mentions that from an early age, children are reminded of their roles and places in society.[16] This is reinforced, Makar notes, by the way many believe

The Great Success Of Bahubali In The Telugu Film Industry
The grand success of the Telugu movie, Bahubali, at the box–office has brought the spot–light on to the Telugu film industry. In the past, many popular
Telugu movies were remade, dubbed in Hindi and Tamil, particularly in last few decades; but the success of Bahubali is altogether at a different level.
The movie has set new benchmarks with all time records for a dubbed Hindi version; in two weeks it has already occupied a position in the top five
movies of Indian cinema. The makers plan to release an international version in English and Chinese, the final run could take it to number one position,
which would be remarkable for a movie from the Telugufilm industry, given the limited audience range it catered to so far.
The Telugu language version of Bahubali has already earned more than twice the money of previous biggest blockbuster from the Telugu film

Exploration to the History of Bollywood Dance
History of World Dance 3813–001

An Exploration to the History of Bollywood Dance In 2008, the movie "Slum dog Millionaire" inspired a new dance craze, quickly spreading across
the globe. Due to the movies, popular hit song, "Jai Ho" and the famous choreographed dance shown in a memorable performance during the closing
credits of the film, known as Bollywood dance, has exploded into dance studios, workout facilities, and films worldwide. For decades, the infusion of
song and dance has been a vital element of the Indian and Hindu film industry. Bollywood dance is not an easy topic to discuss because it does not

The fundamental nature of the ancient text Natya Shastra can be explained as a guide to the traditional Hindu theatre. It describes Bharata Natyam key
elements, such as; mudras, specific hand movements and positions used to convey the stories, facial expressions, body movements and postures.
Additionally, explained in the Natya Shastra, the dancer must use emotions, known as "rasas" to convey her story. There are eight basic rasas; love,
humor, pathos, anger, heroism terror, disgust and wonder, added later was serenity. Families and teachers who taught the devadasis, made a conscience
effort to continue the teachings of this dance for generations through oral tradition. Originally performed for royalty and the wealthy, eventually
devadasis, in some areas, were considered prostitutes and priests were known as pimps. The devadasis reached an all time low when the British began
colonization of India toward the end of the nineteenth century. They were shocked to see women singing in dancing in temples, with very little or no
clothing. In 1927, temple dancing in India was banned. However, it continued to survive, in 1934 Rukmini Devi decided to establish a school,
Kalashektras, in Madras. She paved the way for a more respectable dance movement. When the school was established, Rukmini, changed the name

If you answered none of the above, then you are absolutely correct. Through my close involvement in Sunatya, a classical Indian dance team, I strove to
find a niche for myself within the student body. I strongly believe that the most impactful lesson of my undergraduate career was gaining the
appreciation for a diverse community.
While my undergraduate institution highly encouraged pursuit of cultural activities, it was only because of the student community at UC Davis that
this was feasible. My involvement in the Davis community was largely intertwined with cultural activities, and allowed me to form deep connections

Short Essay On Katha Kahakan Dance
Indian Classical dances have evolved and is still evolving over the years now, and all the classical dances of India have gone through various changes
in terms of form, costumes, gender discourses, recognition etc., over the period of time. Being a Kathak dancer myself from six years now, I have seen
this dance form has given a lot to its people and also have taken a lot from them. While giving recognitions to the dancer, Kathak has been very
choosy rather it has attached prejudices to male and female dancers. Some are known all over the world and some are lost in the crowd. As far as
female dancers are concerned prejudices are specifically attached to them because she is a dancer and her body is under surveillance of her family in
the beginning and then it passes to her husband. This paper will be largely discussing on the prejudices attached to the females kathak dancers and lack
of recognition given to them and the modern day notions attached to male kathak dancers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cultural Appropriation Of Ballet Folklorico
The stage travels, and outbursts, many swirling, dazzling colors, followed by a stampede of footwork accompanying the sound of the mariachi.
Envision it. Mesmerizing isn't it?
Loud, colorful, and live. Three words that describe the engaging form of dance, Ballet Folklorico.
In the 1960's, Ballet Folklorico was founded in the United States by the famous choreographer, Amelia Hernandez. With the combination of her own
heritage and experience of classical ballet, she merged the two, creating Ballet Folklorico. It is traditional Mexican dances and ballet characteristics
with a great emphasis on local folk culture.
But wait! Isn't that appropriating Mexican culture? No.
Cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Two very different terms that many individuals have yet to comprehend. It's understandable, it can be
daunting trying to figure out how to please everyone or at a minimum not offend anyone. The difference between the two is not always clear. There is
a very thin line to walk on.
It is not wrong to wear clothing or eat food from cultures different from your own, but the minute credit is not given to the right people is the minute
one's "appreciation" turns into appropriation.
Cultural appropriation is not seen exclusively in dance but rather a multitude of pop culture. For example in fashion. Fashion is a huge part of today's
culture, and many designers created their clothing through the inspiration of other objects and or culture. Appropriation begins to

The Classical Music : The Hindustani And The Carnatic
Hindustani Classical Music is a form of Hindu classical music that is believed to have originated before the 13th century (CFCRAT). Before the 13th
century, the Hindu Culture had not split their music into types. But their culture soon pushed to two types of classical music after the 13th century.
This was because of the Islamic takeover of northern portions of the subcontinent that introduced Arab and Persian music (Nettl). The two types of
classical Indian music that were created were the Hindustani and the Carnatic (CFCRAT).
During the 13th century of India, composer, ЕљДЃrngadeva wrote the SangД«taratnДЃkara which is proclaimed to be the most influential piece in
Indian Classical Music (ЕљДЃrб№…gadeva). Within this book, ЕљДЃrngadeva explains both types of Indian music, the Hindustani and the Carnatic.
It is believed that this book had major impacts on many musicians of the 13th century and changed Hindustani Classical Music as a whole
(ЕљДЃrб№…gadeva).
Hindustani music is made up of ragas, which are a form of Hindu music that has melodic form, and rhythm. The music is also comprised of
improvisation and parts of tala rhythmic structures (Nettl). This type of music is primary centered around the soloist but also includes accompanists
(Rao 25). In the culture of India, Hindustani music is also best for a small setting and the listeners will sit on the floor with the artists. This helps add
interaction with the audience and creates verbal interruptions and non–verbal expressions (Rao

Society:
According to Eugene M. Makar, the traditional Indian culture is defined by relatively strict social hierarchy. He also mentions that from an early age,
children are reminded of their roles and places in society. This is reinforced by the fact that many believe gods and spirits have integral and functional
role in determining their life. Several differences such as religion divide culture. However, far more powerful division is the traditional Hindu
bifurcation into non–polluting and polluting occupations. Strict social taboos have governed these groups for thousands of years. In recent years,
particularly in cities, some of these lines have blurred and sometimes even disappeared. Nuclear family is becoming central to Indian culture.
Important family relations extend to as far as gotra, the mainly patrilinear lineage or clan assigned to a Hindu at birth. In rural areas it is common that
three or four generations of the family live under the same roof. Patriarch often resolves family issues.
Among developing countries, India has low levels of occupational and geographic mobility. People choose same occupations as their parents and rarely
move geographically in the society.
Family:
India for ages has had a prevailing tradition of the joint family system. It's a system under which even extended members of a family like one's parents,

Reflections Chapter Fourth: Bugaku and Ballet, from the Royal Courts to Theatrical Dance.
The author, Harriet Lihs begins explaining that It is very difficult to separate religious dance and court dance. because the linking of dance to the
courts of nobility has been inevitable in history of the sacred role of the highest authority. So there's for two reasons, firstly dance vividly provided
displays of power, and secondly dance seeks patrons.
So Court dance is related to folk dance, dance demonstrated hierarchy in relationships, demonstration of power, dance for the king, emperor, monarch,
sultan, etc.
Court Dances explores dance in the royal courts of the world and shows how its function lives on in European ballet, Japanese Bugaku, and the dance of

Claerbout: A Visual Analysis
I had previously visited the Contemporary Art Museum on my own and seen parts of David Claerbout's work, but I did not know anything about

I heard others point it out; another dance we do has a storyline that is much more focused on the differing cultural values of India and America and this
is the one I had associated with cultural blending. After the studio I was thinking about how relevant fusion dancing is today in America because many

My Favorite Music
I have been immersed in music for most of my life. My musical home is influenced by both American music–culture and Pakistani music culture. I
grew up listening to Pakistani, Indian, and American music and still do. Along with those cultures, I recently developed a taste in South Korean music.
However, I have never thought about how my musical home and the music culture I grew up in influenced my music preferences. My tastes in music
cannot be labeled as one certain thing. My iPod is filled with music of many different genres and cultures. If I were to break down my music
preference, there are generally three aspects that influence how I resonate with music: the vocalization, the instruments, and the lyrics (if any). Apart
from those aspects, songs that express a certain emotion or story clearly appeal to me.
Vocalization is what most attracts me to a certainsong or style of music. There are some artists whose voices and tones attract me no matter what
genre they sing. Some of my favorite artists are Arijit Singh, Shilpa Rao, Roy Kim, and Yoo Kihyun. Singh has the type of voice that sounds
pleasant no matter what type of song he sings. His song "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" shows the emotional depth of his voice while his song "Nashe Si
Chadgayi" shows the more playful side of his voice. Rao has a very smooth and soothing voice. Her song "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo" mixes her

Tap. Swirl. Pirouette. Move like your body is free from all shackles. With a burning desire in your heart, dance, like your life depends on it. Dance,
like nobody is watching.
When your mind wants to express something, you speak. When your heart wants to express something, your face does the talking. Similarly, dance is
the body's way of expressing itself.
India, with its rich cultural heritage, has plenty to offer. One of the most famous forms of culture that depicts Indian tradition, are the classical dance
forms. The mother of classical dance forms is Bharatnatyam.
HISTORY
Bharatnatyam is presumably the oldest classical dance heritage of India. Conventionally a solo dance performed only by women, it initiated in the
Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu. Eventually, it flourished in South India. The theoretical base for this dance form is the "Natya Shastra", an ancient Hindu
text about the performing arts. Bharatnatyam depicts Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, by way of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The nattuvanar can also play the cymbals or any other instrument. Bharatnatyam is mostly associated with Carnatic music. The instruments that
complement a Bharatnatyam performance consist of cymbals, the flute, a long pipe horn called nagaswaram, a drum called the mridangam, and the
veena. The verses recited during a performance are usually in Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu.
Bharatnatyam is a highly revered, and the most difficult dance form to perfect. The poise, grace and precision one learns from this art form, cannot be
matched by any other. If you can master Bharatnatyam, you can master any dance form in the world!

Analysis Of The Odissi Dance From Dominican Republic

Differences Bring You Closer
For centuries upon centuries, dance has been used as a form as expression. Whether it be religiously to please and entertain the gods, or as a form of
entertainment for the townspeople, dance has brought joy to countless people. Because dance doesn't leave a written history trail it is assumed, but
not proven, to have originated over 2500 years ago. However, dance continues to evolve even today. Take for example the odissi dance from India that
is almost two thousand years old versus the bachata dance from Dominican Republic that is only about 50 years old. Both of these dances originated in
complete separate parts of the world at very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odissi dance was held to a very high esteem not only by commoners, for even royalty were expected to be great dancers of this kind. However, as a
sensual dance of great passion, love, and joy, it doesn't come to be a great surprise that after the 17th century odissi dance took a turn for the worse.
The dancers went from being admired to being known as prostitutes and whores; it was a dark time for odissi dance as it came very close to being
extinct. Nevertheless, India Independence Day marked an enormous change due the recognition that culture and dance was essential to unifying India
once again. Many individuals then set out to revive odissi dance for the better (Nirmal). Odissi dance has since then taken on many different forms
and has even split into three different schools: mahari, nartaki, and gotipua. Mahari dance is the traditional form of odissi used in rituals; narthaki
dance was developed in the royal courts; and gotipua dance is the form of odissi where males wear female costumes and assume those roles (Courtney).
One of the main differences between these dances is the purpose and symbolism. While odissi dance has been used for entertainment it is a classical
temple dance. It is used in rituals and has originally been created for the Divine, bachata on the other hand is the complete opposite. It symbolizes
freedom from one of the worst dictatorships Dominican Republic has ever seen and a freedom of speech they

There is certain confusion regarding the exact time of origin of this dance form. If we take into consideration various literary works and ancient manuscripts we can see that this dance form dates back to 2nd century BC. During the early time of the origin of the dance form it was mainly limited to temple and was regarded as temple dance used to be danced mainly by Deva–Dasis (Servants of God or Temple maiden). • 3. Chapter 5 Essay WORLD MUSIC CHAPTER 5 1. Why does the Indian classical tradition dominate the musical image of South Asia in the west? The classical music of India has gained most of the attention of outsiders probably due to the colonization era that has brought Indo–European invaders (Aryan Civilization) into their territory between 2000 and 1500 BCE due to the presence of rich resources. However, Indian music, unlike the communal music of Africa and Southeast Asia, is individual and often virtuosic and can be both vocal and instrumental. The Hindustani one (North) is more appealing to the Western society as it is more instrumental based, whereas the Carnatic (south) one is more vocally oriented. Another factor that attracts the Western attention... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carnatic music is said to have originated in the Karnatak region of south India. On the other hand Hindustani music is said to have originated in several parts of northern and western India in different times. While Carnatic music is sung and performed in only one style, there are various styles of singing and performing in Hindustani music. Each style of school is called a 'gharana'. The number of ragas used in Carnatic music is more when compared to the fewer ragas used in Hindustani music. It is interesting to note that Carnatic music is characterized by the presence of 72–melakarta raga scheme. Each of the 72 principal ragas is divided into several subordinate ragas. Both the types of music differ in terms of the instruments used in the playing of music as well. While both types of music use instruments such as violin and flute, Hindustani music extensively employs the use of Tabla (a kind of drum or a percussion instrument), Sarangi (a stringed instrument), Santoor, Sitar, etc. On the other hand Carnatic music extensively employs the use of musical instruments such as Veena (a stringed instrument), Mridangam (a percussion instrument), Gottuvadyam, Mandolin, Violin, Flute, Jalatarangam. 4. • 4. A Brief Look at Bharatanatyam Introduction "India's precious heritage of music, drama and dance is one which we must cherish and develop. We must do so not only for our own sake but also for our contributions to the cultural heritage of mankind. Nowhere is it truer than in the field of art that to sustain means to create. Traditions cannot be preserved but can only be created afresh. It will be the aim of this Akademi to preserve our traditions by offering them an institutional form..." (Maulana Azad, 28th January 1953, inauguration of Sangeet Natak Akademi) India is very rich in the tradition of classical and non–classical dance. It is one of the refined developed systems of dance and is also recorded as far back as the 9th century, and it was although called the Sadir in the 1900's. The Natya Shastra is one of the oldest surviving texts on stagecraft in the world and has also been called as the fifth Veda. The other factor which preserved the dance form is the Devadasis (temple dancers) who enjoyed high status and prosperity and was encouraged by public funds to pursue their arts. Slowly this tradition of the Devadasis fell into disrepute due to economic and social pressures. Rukmini Devi, a member of the Brahmin family is credited for reviving the art form bringing it back to stage in the early 1900's. During the initial days of theatre, the artists would mime, the singers/vocalists would sing and the dancer who occupied the central position would bring out the meaning of the story through hand and ... • 6. Indian Classical Music Structure And Sets It Apart What differences Indian classical music structure and sets it apart in the world's classical traditions? Give examples that highlight structural and conceptual differences. (For example the shruthi or the drone – how vital is it, and what is the philosophy behind it?) Indian classical music is one of the oldest forms of music in the world. It is rooted in antiquity, with traces of its origin found in areas such as the ancient religious Vedic hymns, tribal chants, devotional temple music, and folk music. Indian music is melodic in nature, as opposed to Western music which is harmonic. The most important point to note is that movements in Indian classical music are on a one–note–at–a–time basis. This progression of sound patterns along time is the most significant contributor to the tune and rhythm of the presentation, and hence to the melody. Indian music can be further distinguished into two main streams of Hindustani (Northern Indian) and Carnatic (Southern Indian). The origins and fundamental concepts of both these types of music are the same, although the prime form of music here is the ancient complex patterns of melody called raga merged with Talas or rhythm that affects energy centres laying emphasis as a tool of meditation for self–realization. North Indian music, known as Hindustani Sangeet is usually considered to be a mixture of traditional Hindu musical concepts and Persian performance practice. And this past year this quote has been my motto I live by. I have spent this past year, devoting myself to practicing and perfecting my dancing skills, and I hope to continue so. I can never get bored with it because there is always room to improve. To me, dance is more than just a beautiful art form. Dance is me expressing what I cannot always express in words. The range of musical variety in India expands far beyond simple melodies to intricately formed classical sagas. India is the seventh biggest country in the world and the 3rd largest in the northern hemisphere. Of the 29 states, it consists of a population of 1.32 billion citizens. Due to its vastly increasing population, it's culture continues to adapt and thrive within an ever–changing society. Despite the fact that Indian culture is well known for its exotic animals, foods and much more. It is beloved for their art and music. Shortly after the sweet birth of music, came dance; which originally served a spiritual purpose and described a spiritual energy that connected its people with several figures within the Hindu religion. It wasn't till around 1960 when dance art forms began turning towards more modern and western themes. In 1899 the first Bollywood short film was screened for the first time, which planted seeds for pop culture to take root within music and redesigned what Hindi music was and will ever be. Many padams (narrative pieces) depicted the love story of a nayak (hero) and a nayika (heroine). In most cases, the nayak was in the form of Lord Krishna, or Shiva or any other mythological hero. While Shiva was said to be serious, Krishna was full of pathos and love. Thus, the choreographies mainly concentrated on Sringara rasa (love). Gradually the devadasi system started getting plagued with several notorious ills. Around this time, it was customary for the Indian people hailing from royal or aristocratic families to invite a devadasi to a celebration, to sing and dance and perform. The best dancers were invited to the royal courts to perform, in return which they were provided with a shelter. In this period, the position of the devadasis could be compared to that of an apsara (celestial nymph) who danced in the courts of the Gods in order to please them. Eventually, the rich men and the aristocrats attracted the devadasis with good money and luxurious lifestyles and lured them into being their mistresses. The devadasis were easily enticed to the kind of lifestyle offered to them. Thus, the sringara rasa in their choreographies converted into eroticism and they danced merely to appease the rich men. As consequence of which, these devadasis who were held at par with the temple priests lost their respect in the society. By this time, the Europeans had arrived to India. Their ... Golden Age It was when Gods called a council and realized that there was nothing to occupy their time or grab their attention to that they thought of putting an end to this situation by retelling stories with the help of gestures and motions. And so came about the art of dance and drama into being. All this happened approximately in the era which is called the Golden Age or Krita Yuga in Indian mythology. The Golden Age lasted for hundreds of thousands of years and then according to cosmic laws Krita Yuga was replaced by Treta Yuga and everything in the world underwent great changes. Ideals, morals, ethics were distorted. It is said that the human body is Shiva's damaru (drum). Shiva always carried a drum because it is symbolic of the rhythm of life. I had the opportunity to take a Bollywood Class at the dance studio where I teach, A Leap Above Dance. While I have a strong dance background in ballet and jazz, I had never before tried Bollywood. The class had about 15 students, all female, and was taught by Megan Powell, who was a part of the World Dance Program at BYU, where she had the opportunity to take a course on Indian dance practices. What I witnessed in class, as well as through my research, has exposed a sexual representation of females within Bollywood dancing. This sexualization can be seen through the costume choices, hip movements, and the male gaze often featured in Bollywood dances. Bollywood dance is an art form derived from Indian classical and folk dances that originated in the 1950s's and 60's1. The dance practice involves fast paced, precise hand movements, each of which has its own unique cultural significance. While many of the hand positions look similar and were easy for me to mix up, Megan explained that they are very distinct, and it is important to use the correct motion. With the combination of her own heritage and experience of classical ballet, she merged the two, creating Ballet Folklorico. It is traditional Mexican dances and ballet characteristics with a great emphasis on local folk culture. But wait! Isn't that appropriating Mexican culture? No. Cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Two very different terms that many individuals have yet to comprehend. It's understandable, it can be daunting trying to figure out how to please everyone or at a minimum not offend anyone. The difference between the two is not always clear. There is a very thin line to walk on. It is not wrong to wear clothing or eat food from cultures different from your own, but the minute credit is not given to the right people is the minute one's "appreciation" turns into appropriation. Cultural appropriation is not seen exclusively in dance but rather a multitude of pop culture. For example in fashion. Fashion is a huge part of today's culture, and many designers created their clothing through the inspiration of other objects and or culture. Appropriation begins to ... • 34. The Classical Music : The Hindustani And The Carnatic Hindustani Classical Music is a form of Hindu classical music that is believed to have originated before the 13th century (CFCRAT). Before the 13th century, the Hindu Culture had not split their music into types. But their culture soon pushed to two types of classical music after the 13th century. This was because of the Islamic takeover of northern portions of the subcontinent that introduced Arab and Persian music (Nettl). The two types of classical Indian music that were created were the Hindustani and the Carnatic (CFCRAT). During the 13th century of India, composer, ЕљДЃrngadeva wrote the SangД«taratnДЃkara which is proclaimed to be the most influential piece in Indian Classical Music (ЕљДЃrб№…gadeva). Within this book, ЕљДЃrngadeva explains both types of Indian music, the Hindustani and the Carnatic. It is believed that this book had major impacts on many musicians of the 13th century and changed Hindustani Classical Music as a whole (ЕљДЃrб№…gadeva). Hindustani music is made up of ragas, which are a form of Hindu music that has melodic form, and rhythm. The music is also comprised of improvisation and parts of tala rhythmic structures (Nettl). This type of music is primary centered around the soloist but also includes accompanists (Rao 25). In the culture of India, Hindustani music is also best for a small setting and the listeners will sit on the floor with the artists. This helps add interaction with the audience and creates verbal interruptions and non–verbal expressions (Rao ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both, when balanced with one another, provide for the strongest form of society in which all are unified under some ideas, but differences are tolerated and accepted. One of the strongest factors of determining the present status of unity and diversity is the current state of affairs within a community. Society: According to Eugene M. Makar, the traditional Indian culture is defined by relatively strict social hierarchy. He also mentions that from an early age, children are reminded of their roles and places in society. This is reinforced by the fact that many believe gods and spirits have integral and functional role in determining their life. Several differences such as religion divide culture. However, far more powerful division is the traditional Hindu bifurcation into non–polluting and polluting occupations. Strict social taboos have governed these groups for thousands of years. In recent years, particularly in cities, some of these lines have blurred and sometimes even disappeared. Nuclear family is becoming central to Indian culture. Important family relations extend to as far as gotra, the mainly patrilinear lineage or clan assigned to a Hindu at birth. In rural areas it is common that three or four generations of the family live under the same roof. Patriarch often resolves family issues. Among developing countries, India has low levels of occupational and geographic mobility. People choose same occupations as their parents and rarely move geographically in the society. Family: India for ages has had a prevailing tradition of the joint family system. • 36. Reflection Of Bugaku And Ballet Reflections Chapter Fourth: Bugaku and Ballet, from the Royal Courts to Theatrical Dance. The author, Harriet Lihs begins explaining that It is very difficult to separate religious dance and court dance. because the linking of dance to the courts of nobility has been inevitable in history of the sacred role of the highest authority. So there's for two reasons, firstly dance vividly provided displays of power, and secondly dance seeks patrons. So Court dance is related to folk dance, dance demonstrated hierarchy in relationships, demonstration of power, dance for the king, emperor, monarch, sultan, etc. Court Dances explores dance in the royal courts of the world and shows how its function lives on in European ballet, Japanese Bugaku, and the dance of the Asante kings of Ghana (West Africa). • 38. Claerbout: A Visual Analysis I had previously visited the Contemporary Art Museum on my own and seen parts of David Claerbout's work, but I did not know anything about him or his work. I was intrigued by the explanation behind Claerbout's work; I had not considered the fact that his art is a still image that simultaneously seems to capture the passage of time and a specific moment. The Elvis piece was one that I was taken by surprise by during the Perception Studio. I had previously seen the compositional sketch of the piece and sections of the video, but I had not made the connection between the two. As an art student, I found it fascinating to see Claerbout's planning compared to his final piece. This emphasizes how what the viewer perceives, especially in relation to contemporary art, may be very different from the artist's intended vision. I think it is important for viewers to both form their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One thing that immediately came up was the fact that the dance appeared to be a blend of cultures and styles. This is accurate because USF Naach is a Bollywood fusion group and so the songs we use include both English and Hindi songs; we also include elements of classical Indian dance styles (Bharatanatyam), bhangra, raas, contemporary, and hip–hop. I hadn't really considered the cultural blend as much with this particular performance until I heard others point it out; another dance we do has a storyline that is much more focused on the differing cultural values of India and America and this is the one I had associated with cultural blending. After the studio I was thinking about how relevant fusion dancing is today in America because many of us grew up not entirely fitting into either the traditional Indian or American cultural norms, while others grew up in India and experienced a drastic change when they came to the US. Thus, fusion provides a balance between the two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. My Favorite Music I have been immersed in music for most of my life. My musical home is influenced by both American music–culture and Pakistani music culture. I grew up listening to Pakistani, Indian, and American music and still do. Along with those cultures, I recently developed a taste in South Korean music. However, I have never thought about how my musical home and the music culture I grew up in influenced my music preferences. My tastes in music cannot be labeled as one certain thing. My iPod is filled with music of many different genres and cultures. If I were to break down my music preference, there are generally three aspects that influence how I resonate with music: the vocalization, the instruments, and the lyrics (if any). Apart from those aspects, songs that express a certain emotion or story clearly appeal to me. Vocalization is what most attracts me to a certainsong or style of music. There are some artists whose voices and tones attract me no matter what genre they sing. Some of my favorite artists are Arijit Singh, Shilpa Rao, Roy Kim, and Yoo Kihyun. Singh has the type of voice that sounds pleasant no matter what type of song he sings. His song "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" shows the emotional depth of his voice while his song "Nashe Si Chadgayi" shows the more playful side of his voice. Rao has a very smooth and soothing voice. Her song "Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo" mixes her soothing voice with EDM. It is an interesting combination that is both mellow and exhilarating. Both Singh ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Odissi dance was held to a very high esteem not only by commoners, for even royalty were expected to be great dancers of this kind. However, as a sensual dance of great passion, love, and joy, it doesn't come to be a great surprise that after the 17th century odissi dance took a turn for the worse. The dancers went from being admired to being known as prostitutes and whores; it was a dark time for odissi dance as it came very close to being extinct. Nevertheless, India Independence Day marked an enormous change due the recognition that culture and dance was essential to unifying India once again. Many individuals then set out to revive odissi dance for the better (Nirmal). Odissi dance has since then taken on many different forms and has even split into three different schools: mahari, nartaki, and gotipua. Mahari dance is the traditional form of odissi used in rituals; narthaki dance was developed in the royal courts; and gotipua dance is the form of odissi where males wear female costumes and assume those roles (Courtney). One of the main differences between these dances is the purpose and symbolism. While odissi dance has been used for entertainment it is a classical temple dance. It is used in rituals and has originally been created for the Divine, bachata on the other hand is the complete opposite.
