Arc flash typically occurs when the electrical insulation or isolation between live conductors is severed or can no longer withstand the applied voltage. Near the high power electrical equipment, the short-circuit power available is high and consequently so is the energy associated with the electrical arc in case of a fault.
In Europe, regulation and standardization are mainly aimed at protecting workers against the risks of direct contact during work and interventions on and near electrical installations. The risks in the case of electric arc and the means to prevent them are mentioned but not developed. The effects of the electric arc:
The electric arc produces intense light and heat, high noise, high overpressure
Heat and splashes of molten metal can cause lethal burns
Noise can lead to permanent or temporary hearing loss, a flash of vision disorders
The overpressure can open and project the doors of electrical cabinets or cause falls during work at height
In addition to personal injury, an arc flash can result in serious damage to electrical equipment. which can cause disruption to electrical systems in manufacturing and process industry environments or tertiary buildings. The cost of downtime can be considerable. elec calc™ Arc Flash module provides the professionals of the electrical industry with a fundamental tool in the sector, as the user will be able to develop its safety analysis in the vicinity of switchboards and panels. By design, elec calc™ has almost all the data allowing the calculation of the figures of the arc flash, from which the user will be able to elaborate his security analysis near the tables and boxes.
This training presentation covers the basic on arc flash and other electrical hazards, including the effects of an arc flash incident and how to determine shock and flash protection boundaries for a safe workplace
An arc blast or flash can occur when workers service electrical power, transmission, and distribution systems using high voltage. It is important to understand the OSHA, NFPA, IEEE and NEC requirements as well as the hierarchy of controls to reduce the risk. Understanding how to calculate a flash analysis to determine the protection boundaries, train workers on the hazards of high voltage electricity and use of personal protective equipment and clothing, and using the right tools for the job are all important steps. Learn more about arc blast/flash in this presentation. If you need advice or help with electrical safety, contact our staff of CSPs at The Windsor Consulting Group, Inc. We have past performance working with contractors near powerlines and underground utilities.
Practical Arc Flash Protection for Electrical Safety ProfessionalsLiving Online
Electrical safety is an important issue for those working on electrical facilities in utility networks and large industrial installations. A number of serious accidents including fatalities occur every year due to accidents involving electricity resulting in huge financial losses and wasted man-hours. Arc flashes in electrical equipment are now considered one of the major causes of electrical accidents even surpassing the well known hazards of electric shock. Avoiding arc flash incidents and the resulting injuries is one of major challenges today facing electrical workers and requires adequate attention in the stages of system planning, design, installation, operation and maintenance.
Injuries due to arc flash can depend on many factors, one of which is the incident thermal energy on a worker exposed to a flash. Today, a considerable body of knowledge exists as a result of research efforts and is available to designers and maintenance engineers in the form of standards such as IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E. This workshop will detail the basis of this approach and also about the major advances that have been made in the area of PPE made of FR fabrics and rated for different levels of thermal exposure.
Prevention however still remains the best form of protection and switchgear manufacturers have made considerable design advances to ensure that the effect of arc flash incidents is contained within the enclosure of switchgear (often called arc flash resistant switchgear) and methods of testing such switchgear have also evolved simultaneously. Another important factor is the approach to avoid arc incidents within the switchgear by proper design and maintenance and techniques to reduce the severity of the flash should such incidents occur.
These would form the key focus areas of this workshop.

10 Most Common PPE Mistakes in Electrical Arc FlashMagid
The Top 10 Mistakes Made in Electrical Workplace Safety is a presentation from Magid Glove & Safety breaks down the 10 most common mistakes made in electrical workplace safety and provides safety tips and product recommendations that will help keep your workers safe and protected.
The electrical arc creates a pressure wave. The incident energy is the energy of this arc-flash coming into contact with a surface. Essentially an electric arc creates a radiation burn which accounts for the internal burns a person can receive when exposed to an electrical arc flash.
Many workers working on energised equipment are injured and/or killed each year. Several of these casualties are a result of arc flash.
Arc Flash is considered as one of the most destructive and dangerous instances when dealing with electrical wirings. A single occurrence can destroy metals and it has the ability to kill a person if not protected by Arc Flash Clothing. An arc flash can create an arc blast that can shatter anything because it is as hot as the as surface of the sun. This kind of heat can destroy metals instantly and completely burn a body beyond recognition.
Arc Flash ProtectionSerious injuries are caused by the arc flash:
Burns
Respiratory system damage
Hearing damage
Skin penetration from flying debris
Eye and face injuries
An arc flash may happen instantly and if the worker does not have the correct protection, they will already be dead when the arc flash hits them.
The use of Arc Flash Protective Equipment will lessen the damages caused by an arc flash because all of these equipments are solely made to withstand the heat.
Typical Arc Flash Clothing Applications
Working on electrical systems and switchrooms at 500 volts, live testing and proving dead on electrical systems, fitting and removal of LV-HV earths on electrical systems, working on panels/control circuits with exposed energised conductors, removal of bolted covers from energised electrical equipment, racking in/out of switchgear, racking in/out of starters and control gear, live testing and proving dead on electrical systems 11-33kV - T&D UK stock a broad range of Arc Flash Clothing and PPE.

Impact of IEC 61508 Standards on Intelligent Electrial Networks and Safety Im...Schneider Electric
Improper integration of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) into medium / high voltage electrical networks can impact both network performance and safety. Now, standards such as IEC 61508 provide a framework from which new safety risks can be managed. This paper simplifies the complexity of integrating new devices into existing grid networks by explaining how to implement IEC safety and maintenance standards. Examples are presented for how to minimize cost and maximize safety benefits.
Do IT administrators violate arc flash requirements
when they turn off or reset a branch circuit breaker?
What about swapping out a rack power strip? Most
data center operators are familiar with fire safety and
shock hazard protection, but are less familiar with arc
flash safety. Three IT trends have increased the
severity of a potential arc flash in the IT space; higher
data center capacities, higher rack densities, and
higher efficiency designs.
This paper discusses these three trends in the context
of arc flash safety within the IT space. Arc flash is
explained, potential areas of concern in the IT space
are identified, and compliance with associated regulations
is discussed.
One statistic that continually stands out, the most common cause of arc flash accidents is due to human error. Regardless of how much electrical experience the employee may have, phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground contact often happens because an employee is distracted while performing energized work.
There are many reasons why to believe that the Italian PV market has a bright future.
First of all, data show photovoltaics are playing a fundamental role in the electricity production market. According to Anie Rinnovabili, as of January 2019, Italy witnessed a cumulative installed PV capacity of 20.08 GW. This figure shows that the Italian solar market grew 7% compared to 2017 with 437 MW of new capacity added.
Secondly, the country is renowned for its excellent weather conditions. According to the Photovoltaic Geographical Information System, the annual solar radiation ranges from 3.6 kW per square meter in the Po river area to 5.4 kW per square meter in Sicily. Numbers speak clearly: Italy shows great potential for solar energy project development. Furthermore, Italy is also one of the earliest countries to have reached the “solar market parity” status (subsidy-free PV projects). Traditionally, the solar power capacity in Italy had been directly subsidized through a Feed-in Premium subsidy, known as Conto Energia. In an interview released for Intersolar, Gennaro Sposato (Specialist at the Rödl & Partner consulting firm), affirmed that the expiration of the Conto Energia feed-in tariffs has shined a new light on the country’s solar market. Now that the market is completely independent of political processes, a new horizon of business opportunities has arisen for companies and investors, both in new installations and in the secondary market.
Solar PV panels are very sensitive to solar shadings. Total or partial shading conditions have a significant impact rate on the capability of delivering energy and may result in lower output and power losses. Cells in a solar panel are usually connected in series to get a higher voltage and therefore an appropriate production of electricity. But when shading occurs, this structure presents some limitations.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the digital management of the information processes for the design, construction, and management of building projects. The use of the digital model – the representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a structure – promotes interoperability and interaction among the various stakeholders and the result is a highly interactive environment capable of adapting to changes.
According to “Delivering value with BIM: a whole of life approach” book, a BIM object is a model element which contains:
*Information that defines the product or element
*Geometric characteristic of the physical product or element
*Visualization data giving the object a recognizable appearance
*Functional data that allows the object to be positioned or to behave in a certain manner.
Therefore, a BIM object is not a simple digital representation in 3D, but an intelligent object as it contains the metadata that describes what kind of object it is, its classification, performance values, the material type, expected lifetime, manufacturer, maintenance, its behavior and also information regarding sustainability and energy efficiency and so on. This information is crucial for the management of the object along the whole life-cycle of the building project.
How can BIM objects be classified? Which are their sources?
Any software purchasing process implies a certain time of critical reflection on several aspects: costs, ROI, usability, integration, and technical support just to name a few. Technical support is a fundamental factor that must be necessarily taken into consideration when buying an engineering software solution mainly for three relevant reasons.
First of all, it comes to the learning process. The acquisition and implementation of a new engineering software solution suppose a new work methodology. Furthermore, in case of an issue affecting the operational performance, it is important to count with experienced technical engineering support able to provide assistance in direct contact, with ease and comfort.
Technical support is also a fundamental business unit for being the main point of contact with the customer. Understanding changing clients’ preferences and collecting their consideration and expectations on the software solutions is not only important, but it is necessary as it shows unique chances of improvements to any company.
Access to energy is at the heart of the economic development of any country. This slide shows the fundamental differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources. To cope with climate change and to guarantee the planet survival, the world needs to take urgent action. In this scenario, solar energy is leading the energy shift. Furthermore, with declining investments cost, producing solar electricity for the purpose of self-consumption is on the rise. A solar self- consumption installation uses the PV electricity generated on-site to meet the energy needs of the consumer while minimizing or excluding the use of electricity from the utility grid.
In Africa, the potential for solar energy is immense. The continent is, in fact, is the brightest in the world. Its 30.37 million km² receive a solar irradiance equal to or greater than 2,000 kWh/ (m2 year).
In the management of the energy resources, increasing the production of solar energy and other forms of renewable energy should be the top priority for policymakers, if they are keen to foster the African power transition towards a more prosperous and sustainable future. The African economy is growing and and according to IRENA, the electricity demand should triple by 2030. Africa is endowed with significant renewable resources of all forms: biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar or wind. This great energetic wealth could change the face of Africa forever. In fact, the diversification of energy sources increases the power generation capacity; the energetic shift would then resolve two of the Achilles’ heels in the energy landscape: satisfying the rising demand as well as replacing the poor-quality supply networks with reliable and safe energy supply.
When we talk about Building Information Modeling (BIM) we are not talking about a trend, but about a real digital revolution in the building sector, ready to break up obsolete schemes and processes.
For a long time, the engineering and construction sectors were looking for tools to increase the productivity and quality of their projects by reducing costs and delivery times. BIM has positioned itself in these sectors as the ideal tool for achieving these goals.
Electrical engineers can complete all aspects of electrical design including power and lighting, fire alarm, communications, security systems, and other building services in a single environment.
Through BIM, electrical engineers will be able to detect clashes and avoid electrical conflicts due to contradictory information between documents and building systems.
elec calc ™ BIM is an essential solution for electrical engineering. It is the first software in the world that perfectly integrates the electrical calculation in the BIM process. Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus
Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

4. elec calc™ Arc Flash module
Arc Flash
4. Arc Flash is a dangerous condition associated with
the release of energy caused by an electrical arc.
Arc Flash
5. Arc flash typically occurs when the electrical
insulation or isolation between live
conductors is severed or can no longer
withstand the applied voltage.
Near the high power electrical equipment, the
short-circuit power available is high and
consequently so is the energy associated with
the electrical arc in case of a fault.

6. In Europe, regulation and standardization
are mainly aimed at protecting workers
against the risks of direct contact during
work and interventions on and near
electrical installations. The risks in the case
of electric arc and the means to prevent
them are mentioned but not developed.
Arc Flash
7. In some countries, particularly in North
America, these risks are better taken into
account for human, material and financial
aspects, and regulations are much more
stringent in this area.
Arc Flash
14. Arc Flash
There is no method of analysis
and risk assessment by IEC or
European standards.
15. Arc Flash
In contrast, the United States
has the following documents:
NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace) takes
into account all electrical risks including those due to electric arcs
recommends PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to be used
depending on the level of risk.
IEEE 1584-2002 (Guide for Performing Arc-Flash Hazard
Calculations) gives the methods to calculate the incident energy in
case of electric arc and allows determining an arc flash protection
boundary.
18. Arc Flash
Risk management
and prevention
have always been
important aspects of
the safety programs
within the electrical
industry.
The correct
assessment of the
risk level of the arc
flash can help reduce
downtime and ensure
a safer working
environment.
19. Arc Flash
The arc flash module provides the
professionals of the electrical industry
with a fundamental tool in the sector,
as the user will be able to develop its
safety analysis in the vicinity of
switchboards and panels.
The correct assessment of
the risk level of the arc flash
can help reduce downtime
and ensure a safer working
environment.
20. Arc Flash
By design, elec calc™ has almost all
the data allowing the calculation of the
figures of the arc flash, from which the
user will be able to elaborate his
security analysis near the tables and
boxes.
21. Arc Flash
❑ It calculates the corresponding cut-off
times of the concerned protective
devices.
❑ Specific data of the equipment can be
completed or modified by the user
through a simple interface.
22. Arc Flash
From the operating modes described in a
project, elec calc™ determines the
maximum and minimum three-phase
short-circuit currents that can occur on a
distributor.
23. Arc Flash
The following results are provided
according to the calculation methods of
the IEEE 1584-2002 guide (empirically
derived model or method of Lee
depending upon the characteristics of
the installation):
24. Arc Flash
• The maximum incident energy at the
working distance
• The protection boundary for the
boundary energy
• The glove class (PPE) to be used to
prevent the risk of electric shock (IEC
60903 and ASTM D 120)
26. Arc Flash
elec calc™ allows the edition of the
labels to be affixed on the concerned
equipment or the export of the
corresponding results to make possible
the customization of the labels.
27. Arc Flash
The format of the label is consistent with
the recommendations of the document
NFPA 70E (edition 2018).
In addition, elec calc™ monitors the
evolutions of the installation and
prevents the obsolescence of previously
published labels.
