Benjamin Zephaniah was born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents. He had a difficult childhood, leaving school unable to read or write. His poetry was strongly influenced by Jamaican music and culture. Though he received a criminal record as a youth, he eventually published books of poetry and performed widely. The poem "What if" uses repetition of "If you can" to convey a message of persevering through difficulties with government, neighbors, and injustice while maintaining one's dignity.
