The poem describes a speaker's painful nights spent alone in bed, unable to sleep due to nightmares. Over the past two nights, the speaker has been awakened screaming from fiendish dreams filled with terrible images representing mankind's capacity for horror. By the third night, after again waking from these dreams, the speaker weeps like a child, overcome with strange sufferings. While the dreams seem fitting punishment for those deeply stained by sin, the speaker asks why these pains must fall upon him.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The pains of sleep by samuel taylor coleridge (bianca, juana and sol)
1. The Pains Of Sleep
By: Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Sol Santayana, Bianca Ieraci and Juana
Zufriategui.
2. Ere on my bed my limbs I lay,
It hath not been my use to pray
With moving lips or bended knees;
But silently, by slow degrees,
My spirit I to Love compose,
In humble trust mine eye-lids close,
With reverential resignation
No wish conceived, no thought exprest,
Only a sense of supplication;
A sense o'er all my soul imprest
That I am weak, yet not unblest,
Since in me, round me, every where
Eternal strength and Wisdom are.
Poem
3. But yester-night I prayed aloud
In anguish and in agony,
Up-starting from the fiendish crowd
Of shapes and thoughts that tortured me:
A lurid light, a trampling throng,
Sense of intolerable wrong,
And whom I scorned, those only strong!
Thirst of revenge, the powerless will
Still baffled, and yet burning still!
Desire with loathing strangely mixed
On wild or hateful objects fixed.
Fantastic passions! maddening brawl!
And shame and terror over all!
Deeds to be hid which were not hid,
Which all confused I could not know
Whether I suffered, or I did:
For all seemed guilt, remorse or woe,
My own or others still the same
Life-stifling fear, soul-stifling shame.
4. So two nights passed: the night's dismay
Saddened and stunned the coming day.
Sleep, the wide blessing, seemed to me
Distemper's worst calamity.
The third night, when my own loud scream
Had waked me from the fiendish dream,
O'ercome with sufferings strange and wild,
I wept as I had been a child;
And having thus by tears subdued
My anguish to a milder mood,
Such punishments, I said, were due
To natures deepliest stained with sin,—
For aye entempesting anew
The unfathomable hell within,
The horror of their deeds to view,
To know and loathe, yet wish and do!
Such griefs with such men well agree,
But wherefore, wherefore fall on me?
To be loved is all I need,
And whom I love, I love indeed.
5. Summary:
The poem begins with the speaker stating that he has been laying in his bed for
an extended period of time, unable to move. He does pray and turns his soul over
in “reverential resignation” to “Love.” This action should clean his restlessness and
purify the thoughts he’s been having.
As the poem continues, the speaker describes what the last two nights of his life
have been like. He has seen a variety of terrible images (nightmares) that wake
him screaming from sleep. All of these sights represent the horrors that mankind is
capable of, and by default, the speaker himself.
By the end of the piece he is asking, almost desperately, why it is that he is the
one who has to bear the responsibility of this horrible dreams..
6. Title:
The title “the pains of sleep” makes reference to the person that the author
describes who is suffering and cannot move. Through the title the author
symbolise death by using the word sleep, He makes us understand that, death is
approaching to this person in bed. We can get to know through it that someone is
suffering pain from bad dreams or nightmares of remorseful feelings.
7. Literary Devices:
- Imagery: “To natures deepliest stained with sin”; the word “stained” makes us use the
sense of sight, as we imagine the stained red or dark
- Hyperbole: “Had waked me from the fiendish dream”; the author is exaggerating the
dream to make flier his anguish
- Rhymes: “Ere on my bed my limbs I lay, It hath not been my use to pray”, ”ay”
rhymes
- Simile: “I wept as I had been a child”; it is used “as” to compare to thing that are not
the same, the suffer with a child.
8. - Repetition: “Deeds to be hid which were not hid”; he repetís the word “hid” to
emphasize that things are confusing.
- Metaphor: “My anguish to a milder mood”; he is changing an idea for other one, he
expresses that he is very sad and changes to sow thing milder
- Personification: “And having thus by tears subdued”; the poet is giving the tears
and addictive that is generally given to a person.
- Style: “In anguish and in agony”; the author choose this words to express emotion
9. Tone:
The tone is sad.
As the poem starts, it gives a saddening feeling as the author describes the painful
night he spends alone lying in bed.
Moreover, It feels tense as he also describes his feelings, his passion and anguish of
loneliness.
11. Important quotes:
● “To be loved is all I need”: You can notice is suffering because he doesn’t
have one to stay by his side, he is alone, and he is begging for love, he
doesn’t want the feeling of loneliness, he just needs someone, he needs love.
● “To know and loathe, yet wish and do!”: He is being made to “know and
loathe” the acts of humankind and there is nothing he can do about it. The
narrator is only able to wish that he could help in some way.
● “Desire with loathing strangely mixed”: This quote caught our attention as
he is able to feel “desire” and “loathing” at the same time. Like he is not in
control of his own body or mind. He feels combinations of every possible
negative emotion.
12. Our Opinion:
In our opinion, this poem is really good as it represents the daily feelings of a man
during the nights. We liked this poem because it shows a very common reality; in
the poem, it makes sense that the man would have difficulty sleeping at times
when he was dealing with such weighty personal problems. And this is something
that happens to us. When we go to sleep after a fight or after hearing bad news, it
is difficult for us to sleep and there is when we start to think about sad things and
we still get worse. On the other hand, this poem seems to present a past love
which the man could not overcome, and continues suffering because of that
person. We believe this is very tender but sad at the same time because he can't
continue his life as he is thinking all the time.
13. Connection with any other poem, story, song
you have read/listened to:
We could find a connection with the song “”Endless Nightmare” by Jake Hill as the
song talks about the pain and anguish that a person feels from the moment he get
up until he get to sleep. it transmits it as a continuous feeling that persecutes him
and that does not end. This is why we can connect it with the poem since the
author of the poem describes the feeling of anguish and despair of a person
whose nightmares do not allow him to sleep at night because they torment him. In
the song something similar happens because the person the author describes
lives in a constant nightmare that torments him, the same thing happens in the
poem, his nightmares chase him, they don't let him sleep so actually he is living an
endless nightmare.
