Or, strategies for successful essay writing
Things to avoid in essay writing!
Write a creative title for your essay
Consider that the title is the first opportunity you have to inform your reader about the thesis of your essay
NEVER just write “Evaluation Essay”
Capitalize the title correctly
Format the essay with double-spacing and page numbers
FIRST THINGS FIRST
The purpose of an introduction is to:
engage the reader
provide background information
present the thesis
Unless necessary for contextualization, save the evidence to support your claims in the body paragraphs.
Don't serve the main meal at the same time as the appetizer!
Too many details in the introduction:
"Air travel is a form of travel in vehicles that can sustain flight". (Really? No kidding!)
Don't start your essay with a definition of what is probably unnecessary: obesity, global warming, cell phones, the internet, etc.
The purpose of simply taking up space is too obvious and wastes opportunity to craft useful sentences that further your essay.
ONLY use a definition if writing about something truly obscure.
Avoid Useless "definitions"
The trick to avoid these words: insert “as opposed to?”
Basically, very, really, literally, truly, personally (as opposed to...?)
Here is a link to a good page about writing concisely: http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/writing-concisely/
Using Words that Do Not Add Meaning
In this essay I will prove...
I will discuss...
As said in the previous paragraph….
As mentioned before...
Avoid these space fillers! Instead - just write what you are saying.
Don't waste space saying what you WILL write about or what you already wrote.
Example:
Wrong: In this essay I will argue that cell phones should not be used while drive.
Better: Cell phones should not be used while driving.
Announcing Yourself to the Reader
Did you ever get tired of reading essays with questions?
Do you think that these questions would be stronger written as statements?
Are all the questions necessary?
Do they engage the reader?
Especially in a repeating pattern: did you ever wonder, did you ever think, why is it that... blah blah blah?
STOP!
And if writing a question, remember to use a question mark when creating a question, even if it's a rhetorical question.
Rhetorical Questions
Avoid Pointing the Camera at Yourself:
I think, I believe, I feel, in my opinion...
Write what you think in a statement
The reader will know what you think by what you write.
ONLY use “I” when framing a direct response:
“I agree/concede/argue/claim…”
Remove yourself
You didn't actually write the paper, but you're really good at introducing other people's quotes!
Stringing them together is almost writing a paper, right?
Not quite!
The reader needs to hear your voice and your ideas that are supported by the evidence, not replaced by them.
After using a quote, be sure to explain how it supports the claim in the topic sentence and the thesis.
Don’t .

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

How to improve your writing
1. Learning how to help your writing improve
Everyone makes mistakes when writing English, but hopefully this lesson will teach you how to avoid
making the basic errors.
Writing Incomplete Sentences
Example: - Unless, of course, you want to make a style point.
The Example above is an incomplete sentence. However sometimes breaking the rules can be a good
thing. In aessay or letter of complete sentences, an occasionalincomplete sentence will call attention
to an important point you are trying to make. Please don’t write a complete letter using incomplete
sentences this is not a style; it’s just poor English and it will look like you don’t know how to write
complete sentence. Make sure that each one of your sentences has a subject-verb pair, an endmark,
and a completethought.
Sentences Run On (letting sentences run and run)
What is a run in sentence? A run-on sentence is when two or more sentences are stuck together
without any legal“glue”
What is legal glue?
Legal glue is a word such as and or using a semicolon. A common mistake with run-ons is called
comma splice, in which a comma attempts, but fails to attach one complete sentenceto another.
There are words that you need to be careful with that resemble legal joiners (consequently,
however, therefore, nevertheless, and so forth). Use these words for the meaning, and not for gluing
sentences together.
Do not forget to capitalize “I”
Did you realize that i did not capitalize the letter I?
One of the common mistakes people first make when writing English is not capitalizing the letter “I”,
the golden rule is the personal pronoun I is always capitalized. Also do not put a little circle on a the
letter i instead of a dot.
Text and messenger a quick hint
A lot of people use mobile phones for sending text and use an instant messenger on the internet, try
keep up your good habits and don’t start writing l M yours 4ever (I am yours forever).
Being Stingy with Quotation Marks
2. It doesn’t matter if you’re writing for schoolwork, your job, or just for personal reasons, you have to
be honest and that requires you tocredit sources. By using someone else’s words, and using them in
your own writing, and omitting the quotation marks is dishonest. If you are doing school or college
work notquoting the source will result in a low grades; when your work might warrant a higher
grade.
What is the solution?
The solution is very simple. If the words are not yours, then you must credit the source,
Mr Bean writes, “Plagiarism is not clever it just shows a lack of knowledge.” You have to be careful in
work or public life; you may besued if the owner of the works finds out.
Letting Slang Seep into Your Speech
Sometimes you can use slang when you are writing, but you have to be very careful when using it as
the reader might not understand what you are saying and become confused.
Example: -It ain’t that slang is a total no-no in fact using it can be the real bee’s knees. But if you
don’t have the 411, you will end up missing the boat.
The above sentence uses a mixture of slang from several different regions of the UK and America. It
is possible that you mightrecognize oneor two of the slang expressions and missed others. From the
example you can see that people can easily not understand the sentence is trying to get across.
Forgetting to Proofread
Proof reading is very often forgotten about and can result in a loss of grade or loss of work in an
work environment. If you have only finished the letter or project only fifteen minutes before you
have to post it intothe mailbox, use the time wisely to proofread your work.
Example of a not proofreading your work for spelling and punctuation
. id you have olnyfinihed the leter or project only fifteen minutes before you have to post it into the
mailbox, use the time wisely to proofread your, work.
Relying on Computer Checksfor Grammar and Spelling
When using Microsoft office or even emails you will have notices that they have built inspell
checkers, you should rememberto glance at them as you write. (Those red and green lines, that
shows up onthe screen to alert you to a possible mistake.) Most people find that they actuallyhelp,
but do not over trust them to much as they are not 100 percent accurate. It is quite east for errors to
slip through. (Did you spot the error that had slipped through? That last sentence should read It is
quite easy for errors to slip through.) the last point is, the computer will often identifiesa mistake
when the sentence is actually correct. Everyone who uses Microsoft office wilget little wavy lines lots
of times, and as you have figured out at Easy Pace Learning, we are prefect. Er . . . perfect.
Repeating Yourself
3. The finale part of the English lessonis about not repeating yourself when you are writing. Repetition
isn’t a fun or enjoyable way for your reader to spend rime reading your letter. Repetitionwill send
your reader away fast and quickly, and may even result in them not even finishing reading your
letter or work.
