A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus
A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)
Mourning and the Comfort Beyond
Comfortable Matthew 5:4
May 1. 2016
Prophecy fulfilled through Jesus
Isaiah 61:1-3
1
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to
bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and
release from darkness for the prisoners, 2
to proclaim the year of the
Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who
mourn, 3
and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on
them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead
of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…
Luke 4:21
“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Matthew 5:1-4
1
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat
down. His disciples came to him, 2
and he began to teach them,
saying: 3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted…
“those who mourn” must be understood in the kingdom context of
being “poor in spirit”… recognizing how much we desperately
need God.
Jesus speaks of those who “mourn after God”
(a mourning that grieves with God over the sins of the world)
Mourning and Comfort in the Scriptures:
Psalm 51:4, 10-12
4
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your
sight… … 10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast
spirit within me. 11
Do not cast me from your presence or take your
Holy Spirit from me. 12
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and
grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me….
Luke 19:41-42
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42
and
said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring
you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.
John 16:20-22
20
I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world
rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy… 22
…Now is
your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and
no one will take away your joy.
Romans 7:24-25
24
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body
of death? 25
Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Philippians 3:18
I have often told you before and now say again even with tears,
many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.
2 Corinthians 7:9-10
9
...I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your
sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God
intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10
Godly sorrow
brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret,
but worldly sorrow brings death.
Repentance ushers in God’s comfort
Authentic repentance of our sins brings the comfort of God that
assures us of forgiveness.
For Personal or Group Reflection
1.Sadness and mourning are not something we welcome, are
they? Why not? Why do we go to such lengths to build a world of
comfort around ourselves? What scares you about being a person who
mourns?
2.What would it mean to cease to work for our own comfort? What
would it look like to open ourselves up to mourning the brokenness of
our own lives and the brokenness in the lives of others?
3.Have you ever experienced being comforted from a source beyond
anything you had known before? What was that like?

Weekly news from WCUMC 5 1 2016

  • 1. Weekly News from WCUMC- 5/01/2016 A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) Mourning and the Comfort Beyond Comfortable Matthew 5:4 May 1. 2016 Prophecy fulfilled through Jesus Isaiah 61:1-3 1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…
  • 2. Luke 4:21 “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Matthew 5:1-4 1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted… “those who mourn” must be understood in the kingdom context of being “poor in spirit”… recognizing how much we desperately need God. Jesus speaks of those who “mourn after God” (a mourning that grieves with God over the sins of the world) Mourning and Comfort in the Scriptures: Psalm 51:4, 10-12 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight… … 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me…. Luke 19:41-42 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. John 16:20-22 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy… 22 …Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. Romans 7:24-25 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Philippians 3:18 I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 9 ...I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. Repentance ushers in God’s comfort Authentic repentance of our sins brings the comfort of God that assures us of forgiveness.
  • 3. For Personal or Group Reflection 1.Sadness and mourning are not something we welcome, are they? Why not? Why do we go to such lengths to build a world of comfort around ourselves? What scares you about being a person who mourns? 2.What would it mean to cease to work for our own comfort? What would it look like to open ourselves up to mourning the brokenness of our own lives and the brokenness in the lives of others? 3.Have you ever experienced being comforted from a source beyond anything you had known before? What was that like?
