A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus
A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)
“From Appetite Suppressant
to Appetite Displacement”
Matthew 5:6
May 22, 2016
Worldly Hunger and Thirst versus Hunger and Thirst for God’s
Righteousness
“... the world around us works so hard to do two competing things.
On the one hand, everything around us attempts to cultivate a
voracious appetite within us for whatever the thing of the day
2. happens to be—particularly when it comes to food. On the other
hand, an entire industry has sprung up whose chief goal is to help us
curb our appetites. The kingdom of the world knows two speeds:
indulgence and avoidance.
The Kingdom of God offers us a third way. I wouldn’t call it a middle
way because the Kingdom of Heaven operates on a different plane
than the kingdom of the world. The Kingdom Jesus is building
subverts the ways of the world not by proposing some kind of
moderation somewhere between indulgence and avoidance. Jesus is
not interested in suppressing our appetites but in displacing them.
What if the greatest craving in our life was the craving for
righteousness?
(From Seedbed Daily Text on Matthew 5:6, by JD Walt)
Matthew 5:1-6
1
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat
down. His disciples came to him, 2
and he began to teach them,
saying: 3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6
Blessed are
those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled.
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
When Jesus called his followers to have a passionate hunger and
thirst for righteousness… what did He have in mind?
A hunger and thirst for TOTAL RIGHTEOUSNESS!!
Personal righteousness
AND
Social righteousness
“‘Happy are those who hunger and thirst for total righteousness’ –
the whole, demanding package, the whole wonderful, transforming
way of life. You see most of our righteousness is too fragmentary.
We want righteousness where it’s convenient, but we aren’t too
excited about becoming righteous people.
(J. Ellsworth Kalas, “The Beatitudes from the Back Side”, p. 49)
Matthew 16:24-25
24
…Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me,
he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25
For
whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life
3. for me will find it.”
For Personal or Group Reflection
1. What does the idea of a ‘hunger and thirst for righteousness” mean
to you?
2. Are you interested in becoming this kind of person and living in
this kinds of relationship with God and others? Explain.
3. This is not easy. That’s why we have to begin with poverty of spirit
and the mourning of brokenness and becoming a meek kind of person.
Where are you in that process?
4. How deep is your hunger and thirst for this kind of
righteousness? Explain.
