A Look at the Heart and Mind of Jesus
A Sermon Series on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12)
“Blessed are the Poor in Spirit”
... or ...
“I Know I Can’t”
Beatitude means blessing and comes from the Latin word
“beatitudo” which means consummate bliss and from the Greek
word “makarios” which describes an untouchable joy
“Jesus calls us to a ‘beatitudinal way of life’ – a life shaped by the
dynamic of seeking and finding God’s presence in our life, doing
whatever is essential to put God at the very center – or rather to put
ourselves at the very center of God’s will.”
(Maxie Dunham, The Workbook on the Beatitudes, p. 17)
Matthew 5:1-12
1
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat
down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them,
2. saying: 3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. 4
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled. 7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be
shown mercy. 8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11
"Blessed are you when people
insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you
because of me. 12
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward
in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who
were before you.
Matthew 5:3
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Poverty of Spirit is a declaration of our absolute dependence on
God.
“Poverty of spirit is a continual awareness of our total dependence
on God for every good thought, word, or deed. It is the conviction of
our utter inability to produce any good thing, unless ‘every moment
God waters it.’ Poverty of spirit is an aversion to human praise,
knowing that all praise is due only to God.”
(John Wesley, Sermon 21, from “The Standard Sermons in Modern
English”,p. 48, Kenneth Kinghorn)
A New Testament parable of the “poor in spirit” is told in Luke
18:9-14
9
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked
down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went
up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax
collector. 11
The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself:
‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers,
adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12
I fast twice a week and
give a tenth of all I get.’
13
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look
up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me,
a sinner.’ 14
“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went
home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be
humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Jesus indicates in Matthew 5:3 that the key to entry into the
kingdom of heaven is our confession of spiritual bankruptcy… our
poverty of spirit.
Are you “poor in spirit”? Have you confessed, “I Know I Can’t”...?
For Personal or Group Reflection
1. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being “not even close,” where do
you rate yourself on the poverty of spirit scale?
2. How does becoming poor in spirit cut against the grain of all
3. you have learned in life? How do you see poverty of spirit at work in
the life of Jesus?
3. Are you ready to take a deeper step of trust in Jesus as your
teacher? How will you signal that to him?
