Digital access equipment attached to central office switches can use ISDN lines or standard dial tones to initiate calls outside a local area network. The central office switch routes calls by temporarily connecting local access lines to long distance services through a switching matrix. It accepts incoming calls and digitally connects to destinations using high-speed intraswitch trunks operating at a minimum of 45 megabits per second.
