A taste of Web 2.0, the key to unlocking the
power of the Internet

Cathy Outten – Science Education Librarian

Editor's Notes

  1. Offers new posibilities for education and educators
  2. The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing , interoperability , user-centered design , [1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web . A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators ( prosumers ) of user-generated content in a virtual community , in contrast to websites where users ( consumers ) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites , blogs , wikis , video sharing sites, hosted services , web applications , mashups and folksonomies .
  3. There is some discussion about whether some of these fit into this category (podcasting) but we are taking a broad defintion. So, there are many categories of tools and it would be impossible to talk in depth about all of these in this one session So we have done some research We will define each one briefly and then look at a few in depth that we think will be appropriate, easy and free - to implement in the classroom. http://www.thewebworks.bc.ca/netpedagogy/glossary.html
  4. Blogs. Webblog Blog posts
  5. http://scienceblogs.com/
  6. National Science Digital Library Expert Voices Blogosphere http://expertvoices.nsdl.org/ Using WordPress software.
  7. Searching for images on Flickr Joining Flickr Using images from Flickr Flickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite, and an online community platform, which is generally considered an example of a Web 2.0 application.  In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository. Its popularity has been fueled by its innovative online community tools that allow photos to be tagged and browsed by folksonomic means“ Say something about YouTube as educational tool. Finding videos.
  8. http://www.fat2fitradio.com/
  9. Facebook – Groups, students can join, your updates show up in their “feeds” You can click on their names and see their “public profiles” good time to give a lesson in web privacy.
  10. Folksonomy – "is an Internet-based information retrieval methodology consisting of collaboratively generated, open-ended labels that categorize content such as Web pages, online photographs, and Web links. A folksonomy is most notably contrasted from a taxonomy in that the authors of the labeling system are often the main users (and sometimes originators) of the content to which the labels are applied. The labels are commonly known as tags and the labeling process is called tagging.  The process of folksonomic tagging is intended to make a body of information increasingly easier to search, discover, and navigate over time "
