Web 2.0 is a new concept in internet use that focuses on user participation, collaboration, and sharing through interactive and dynamic websites. Some key aspects of Web 2.0 include user-generated content, the ability to share content through social media and bookmarking sites, and utilizing new technologies that allow users to participate online through activities like video sharing, chatting, and using social networks. Web 2.0 represents a shift from static websites to more dynamic sites that are focused on the user experience and user involvement.

By using a mesh of social software applications, we here propose the concept of the Personal Research Portal as a means to create a digital identity for the researcher – tied to his digital public notebook and personal repository – and a virtual network of colleagues working in the same field. Complementary to formal publishing or taking part in congresses, the Personal Research Portal would be a knowledge management system that would enhance reading, storing and creating at both the private and public levels, helping to bridge the academic digital divide.
Web 2.0 has been, during the last years, one of the most fashionable words for a whole range of evolutions regarding the Internet. Although it was identified by the current analysts as the key technology for the next decade, the actors from the educational field do not really know what Web 2.0 means. They have different descriptions/definitions for blog, wiki, podcast, RSS, etc. This paper explores some of the current uses of Web 2.0 tools in education and discusses some of their advantages and disadvantages. The paper concludes with an invitation addressed to the educational actors to use these tools in teaching and learning.
