Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters and gain strength from evaporation. They have powerful rotating winds around an eye and can cause dangerous storm surges and heavy rain that damage buildings, trees, and cars when making landfall. Hurricane Katrina formed in August 2005 and caused catastrophic damage when it struck the Gulf Coast of the United States.
