9. THE SPIRALING BEAST Once upon a time trees were the humans of our world. They were walking and talking. They were loud and by loud I mean as loud as 5 fire trucks, in your ear. As eert partied they made noise as loud as a rocket, which Mother Nature didn’t like. Mother Nature was always busy looking after her birds and earth so she needed all the sleep she could get. Sleep was impossible with all the eerts partying and that sort of carry on. Mother nature was furious so she stormed into one of the eerts hang outs. “QUIET DOWN”, she shouted at the top of her lungs, all went silent as the furious tyrant left the hang out. Mother Nature arrived back at her home, lay down and slowly faded away. She awoke; disturbed she knew that she had only had 5, maybe 10 minutes of sleep. Mother Nature could hear the thunderous party noises of the eerts. “That’s the last straw” she whispered to herself. She climbed high into the sky calling all the eerts, all came wondering what she was doing, some scared, others standing bravely, Mother Nature rose her arms gracefully, but what happened next was certainly not graceful. The eerts could hear something, something big and frightening, they froze when they could see the rage filled beast in the form of a hurricane rolling towards them. The crazed beasts froze when run over and turned into trees. Mother Nature sleeps often but still sometimes hears the eerts talking and trying to run, so she sends out her prized possessions, hurricanes. By Matt

10. THINK WRITE Formation The formation of a tropical cyclone is dependent upon a number of favorable environmental conditions which are frequently present in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone. These include a warm ocean surface (above 260C) and several physical parameters contributing to a deeply humid and unstable atmosphere . The formation process begins in an area of low pressure coinciding with vigorous convective cloud in the tropics between about 50 and 220 latitude. Usually the cloud cluster drifts slowly towards the west as the convection increases and winds begin spiraling in towards the system centre. Prematurity As the tropical low becomes further organized and the surface winds reach gale force it is then declared a tropical cyclone according to international convention. Satellite and radar observations of the system show the distinctive spiral banding pattern. Full Maturity If the ocean and atmosphere environment continues to be favorable the cyclone may continue to intensify as it moves pole ward. The cloud system becomes more circular in shape and develops a distinct eye. This is the severe cyclone stage where the cyclone is at its most dangerous. Approximately half of the cyclones that form progress to full maturity. Decay Tropical cyclones normally decay when they move into a less favorable environment, either over land or the cooler waters in higher latitudes. The rate of decay varies with the circumstances. A tropical cyclone moving into mid-latitude westerly's may be quickly sheared apart by strong upper winds, or it may react with a frontal system and persists for several more days. Similarly, a cyclone moving over land normally dissipates rapidly due to loss of its energy source, namely the warm ocean surface. However in northern Australia cyclones moving inland are frequently observed to persist as rain depressions for a number of days bringing widespread flood rains, and may even redevelop if they move over the ocean once more. 11. THINK WRITE A new hurricane - named "Darby" - formed today in the Pacific off Mexico's southwest coast , while Hurricane Celia strengthened farther out at sea. Neither hurricane posed an immediate threat to land. Darby, a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 130 kph, was located about 320 km south-southwest of Puerto Escondido on Thursday afternoon , according to the National Hurricane Centre in Miami. It was expected to strengthen over the next two days as it heads west-northwest, well away from land. The hurricane centre projected the storm could take a sudden eastward turn early next week, putting it on a path toward Mexico's southern Pacific coast. Meanwhile, Celia became a Category 4 hurricane as it headed west across the open Pacific. Its maximum sustained winds increased to 215 kph . It was located about 1200 km off the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Why do they have names? Hurricanes seem to hit a lot in Mexico and America probably due to the warm weather Time Wow!!!
