Hurricane Katrina formed in the Bahamas in August 2005 and traveled across Florida, Cuba, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, killing at least 1,836 people. It was a large storm with winds up to 175 mph that formed from swirling clouds in the center and eliminated everything in its path over the course of 7 days, becoming one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.
