Hurricane Hugo was a category 5 hurricane that formed over warm Atlantic waters near the equator. It destroyed almost everything in its path, putting people and cities in great danger, and causing millions in damage and repair costs from its strong winds and ability to knock down trees and destroy buildings. Hugo was one of the worst and most dangerous storms ever, with wind speeds over 120 miles per hour, and it was responsible for 82 deaths when it hit South Carolina in September 1989.
