In the United States an average of approximately 1,100 people die and 40,000 people are injured annually as a result of motor vehicle crashes in work zones. For addressing the safety in the work zones, a clear understanding of work zone traffic control devices and the dangers they pose to the drivers, pedestrians and workers should be obtained. This would be valuable for highway agencies in setting up proper traffic management plans based on the prevailing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to educate transportation departments, consulting engineers, and others on the safety benefits of Longitudinal Channelizing Devices as an alternative to drums and temporary concrete barrier for work zone traffic channelization. The results show that the acceleration of vehicles in case of water-filled longitudinal channelizing devices is much lesser than concrete barriers, hence, the former proves to be a much safer and efficient tool for work zone areas.

Crossroads Vertical Speed Control Devices: Suggestion from Observation
This work focused on traffic audits and investigation of the vertical speed control devices installed at crossroads as traffic speed being controlled but rear-end accidents can still be found. The speed monitoring through 85th percentile speeds for various types of vehicles: i) passenger cars, ii) pickup trucks, iii) motorbikes, and iv) passenger buses and lorries (i.e., more than four wheels vehicles) was performed. Discussion and recommendation from the obtained results have been made. As an alternative choice to reduce crossroad rear-end collisions, this work introduced crossroad speed table.
Roundabouts: Finding the Right Way
In this paper, I argue that modern roundabouts are a highly favorable solution for roadway intersections because of their benefits with regards to safety, environmental factors, and traffic flow efficiency. I begin by addressing public opinion of roundabouts and then explaining their safety benefits. Next, I demonstrate how roundabouts can overcome commonly perceived drawbacks related to usage by pedestrians, cyclists, oversize vehicles, and emergency vehicles. The penultimate sections are devoted to the cost and land considerations and the environmental benefits associated with roundabouts. Lastly, I show how roundabouts improve traffic flow efficiency and conclude that, all factors considered, roundabouts are a highly favorable design solution.

Crossroads Vertical Speed Control Devices: Suggestion from Observation
This work focused on traffic audits and investigation of the vertical speed control devices installed at crossroads as traffic speed being controlled but rear-end accidents can still be found. The speed monitoring through 85th percentile speeds for various types of vehicles: i) passenger cars, ii) pickup trucks, iii) motorbikes, and iv) passenger buses and lorries (i.e., more than four wheels vehicles) was performed. Discussion and recommendation from the obtained results have been made. As an alternative choice to reduce crossroad rear-end collisions, this work introduced crossroad speed table.
Roundabouts: Finding the Right Way
In this paper, I argue that modern roundabouts are a highly favorable solution for roadway intersections because of their benefits with regards to safety, environmental factors, and traffic flow efficiency. I begin by addressing public opinion of roundabouts and then explaining their safety benefits. Next, I demonstrate how roundabouts can overcome commonly perceived drawbacks related to usage by pedestrians, cyclists, oversize vehicles, and emergency vehicles. The penultimate sections are devoted to the cost and land considerations and the environmental benefits associated with roundabouts. Lastly, I show how roundabouts improve traffic flow efficiency and conclude that, all factors considered, roundabouts are a highly favorable design solution.

Abstract
Today road and transport authorities around the world collectively spend large sums of money each year enhancing and maintaining their road networks. Road users in the majority of countries around the world continue to desire better and smoother roads, despite pressure on road authorities to further reduce expenditure. This pressure is brought about, because funding for road infrastructure is only one of the many priorities competing for Government funds. Pavements cannot be managed to the degree desired by decision makers, unless detailed accurate information and analysis supports the system. Road roughness data is considered one of the most important aspects of road condition information used in practice in pavement management systems.
At present in the market, we have various roughness measuring equipments starting from costliest equipment such as ARAN laser (which uses laser beam to measure the roughness) to moderately costly Bump integrator (which uses the bump counts made by the probe wheel), to cheaper equipment such as MERLIN (which uses the slope value of the wheel to calculate the roughness). In the present research work, an attempt is made to develop low cost roughness measuring equipment and to check its reliability and repeatability to minimize the calibration error. It is calibrated using Bump integrator.

- 9. In fact, a recent survey of practices confirmed that temporary concrete barrier is the option most frequently used by state transportation agencies.

- 16. Resistance to change slows industry-wide adoption of water ballast devices. There is an enduring familiarity with concrete and a tendency to rely on concrete barrier for every use, even when it is not the safest or most appropriate device for the job.
- 18. Because there is no requirement or incentive for change, engineers simply continue to specify temporary concrete barrier for all traffic control jobs, in spite of the innovation of safer and more effective mechanisms.
