Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a technique that enables the simultaneous transmission of multiple optical signals over a single fiber using different wavelengths of laser light. Initially developed in the 1970s, modern WDM systems can combine up to 160 signals, significantly increasing data capacity. WDM is primarily used in single-mode fiber cables but can also be adapted for multi-mode fibers, providing benefits such as reduced management complexity and improved fiber redundancy.
