Oomycetes, also known as water molds, are fungus-like protists that resemble fungi physically but have cellulose rather than chitin in their cell walls. They feed on decaying organic material and reproduce both sexually and asexually, with their asexual spores called zoospores being able to swim using two flagella. Certain water molds are parasites of plants, fish, and other organisms, causing diseases. While most species live saprophytically on dead matter, some cause economically significant plant diseases and fish diseases.
