2. Overview
Topic: Industrialization and Pollution
Assigned Film: Wall-E
Wall-E is a Disney/Pixar animated film about a robot named Wall-E, who was
left on earth while all the humans moved out of earth to utopia because Earth
was uninhabitable. Although this film is supposedly aimed for the younger
audience, it leaves an important message about humanity and it’s uncaring use
of the environment.
Group Participants: Duy Pham and Taylor Coleman

o Jim Morris
5. Message of Wall-e
Wall-e takes real life scenarios that is the norm in most
cultures, such as the texting culture, over consumption of
food and other products and the unwillingness to take
efforts to keep Earth clean. The film then amplifies the
scenarios to show dehumanization caused by advances in
technology, obliviousness to environmental needs, and
obesity as the standard for human race to illustrate the
consequences humanity is currently, and continuously
facing if no changes are made in the near future.
6. Issues Addressed in Walle
● Human Consumption and Waste
● Human Behavior
● Advances in Technology
8. Regarding to the previous slide with the video
The video is a clip from Wall-E, illustrating the future dystopia that we might be headed to. The clip
starts out with two guys video chatting each other, when they are only a body length apart from each
other. Which makes Wall-E confused on why they would do that. The video clip would zoom out and
then shows everybody on hovering seats interacting with one another in front of their projected
screen, which is basically a computer monitor. At about :38 seconds into the film, the one of the
humans ask for a drink and it was delivered by a robot right away. It is important to note that all of
them are either fat or obese. When one of them happens to fall over, they could not get back up
without the help of Wall-E. It seems that all the jobs that we have nowadays is done by robots now.
And all the humans do is basically what you call “eat, sleep, and play”. But even when playing, for
example the last part showing people at the beach, they were still on their hovering chair and still on
their computer. It seems that going to the beach is only just a place to go to. They don’t go to the
beach to play in the water or build sand castles anymore. This whole film shows that later on our
generation will be too dependant on technology that we don’t have to do anything anymore. It will all
be done by robots. It does sound great not having to do anything, and getting what you want when
you want it. But using technology like this will dehumanize them, no more meeting with each other to
hang out, they will just meet each other over video calling. And getting every handed to you will make
you fat and lazy, which is really unhealthy for your health.
9. Human Consumption and Waste
● Human consumption and waste is the key factor to pollution all around the world.
● The film stresses the problem of obesity and over consuming products that aren’t beneficial to
healthy living
o Takes the real issue, and shows how over time it will affect everyone in the future.
10. Facts about Human Consumption and Waste
● “Americans discard four-fifths of a ton of trash per person, per year”
o Only America
● “1.3 billion metric tons of food in the world is lost (on the production side of the food supply chain)
or wasted (on the consumption side) each year.”
11. Human Behavior
● The film Wall-e shows how unmotivated, unaware, and self centered humanity can be.
o Causing increased waste
o Effecting humans as well the environment
o Ignorance is bliss, in such that the humans are enjoying life outer space while ignoring their
responsibilities and having robots do the dirty work.
12. Facts about Human Behavior
● “Human behaviour is responsible for a variety of large-
scale environmental changes, ranging from systemic
developments like climate change to cumulative
impacts.”
● “Most people even aren’t aware of how their daily
choices are affecting the climate or the larger
environment. Moreover their sense of connection to the
planet- and their understanding of climate change and
environmental processes in general- tend to be quite
limited, easily biased, or even readily avoided.”
13. Technological Advances
● The film uses technology to examine the dangers of
technology.
o Technology is seen as harmless, but is detrimental to the environment.
● Technology dehumanizes humans.
o Loss of compassion towards others
o Increased dependence on technology
o Decreased urge to fix the main issue as well as ignorance of the main issues at hand
● Technology creates a demanding and impatient society
14. Facts about Technological Advances
● Advances causes global impact
o Exposure and contamination of hazardous chemicals, causing injury and diseases
o Land clearances
o Global warming
The release of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and other
greenhouse gases
o Increased reliance on scarce resources.
o Destruction of all resources
Living and Non-living
16. Other notes.
Both Taylor and I have tried our best to contact the other two group members,
Nelida Jaurez-Santoyo, and Shannon Giffard-Sueoka. We posted in our group
a few times, asking them to contact us and even leaving our phone numbers for
them, but none of them replied or contacted us. And when I made this Google
Docs Slideshow, when sharing with them would send them a email notification
doing so. I sent it out on friday morning and right now is sunday afternoon and
there has been no replies from either of them. So Taylor and I had to work on
this project ourselves, while missing two other members.
