Wall-E
Genre PowerPoint
Narrative
• WALL-E, is the last robot left on Earth. Humanity essentially seems to have
destroyed everything. He spends his days tidying up the planet, one piece of
garbage at a time. But during 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality, and
he's more than a little lonely. Then he spots Eve a sleek and shapely probe sent
back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten WALL-E embarks on his greatest
adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy.
• I think this is a good plot as it is really easy to follow, this is essential in order for
children to understand it and considering its an animation the target audience is
children. However because the story line is very original and quite family
orientated- there is no reason why people of all ages couldn’t enjoy it which again
is essential for a child's movie as a child has to go to the cinema with someone! This
makes the film a ‘blockbuster’ the larger the audience the more money. The better
the story line the more conversations and the more interest in the film.
Todorovian theory
• Equilibrium: Wall-e alone on earth clearing up the mess humans have left- garbage.
• A disruption: Shortly after arriving on Earth, EVE discovers the plant. She stores it
and activates her homing beacon, then deactivates as she waits to be retrieved.
• Realisation: When EVE is examined, the plant is missing. EVE and WALL-E witness GO-
4 trying to send the plant away aboard the escape pod.
• Attempt to repair: Wall-e and eve are sent to a repair ward. Wall-e mistakes cleaning
for Eve being harmed and crashes through the glass wall and disables the repair ward
and accidently realises lots of robots.
• Restoration: The AXIOM returns to Earth. EVE finds the parts to repair WALL-E; he
returns to working order, but he has lost his memory. EVE is saddened, and gives
WALL-E a hug and a “kiss.” The electric spark of the kiss re-boots WALL-E’s memory.
Conventions
• The main character is a robot- Wall E. Wall-e is often compared to r2d2 and c3po
‘famous robots’ from the blockbuster film star wars.
• Spaceships
• The setting of the film is mostly on a human less garbage site. The world looks
completely abandoned which suggests that there has been a disaster- a futuristic
prediction of society.
• Moral threat: suggests humans have become lazy and obese and have allowed the
world to become this way. We know this because of lines like ‘Blue- it’s the new
red’; too lazy to change clothes.
• Suggests life span of 150+
• Wall-e suggests that humanity has destroyed the environment which leads on to
the idea of moral threat.
• The robots are trying to figure out the point in living. Which in itself is a science
question- what is the universe’s purpose? Why are we here?
• The film is futuristic- clearly because of the robots and futuristic blue tones
however it could also be set in the past. It is almost as though they are there before
everything has been created, trying the discover the origin.
• Wall e also plays on religious ideas as the robot with Wall e is named eve. Which
could suggest ‘Adam and Eve’ who were the first people on earth in eyes of
Catholics and Christians.
Sub genre
• Romance- Even though they are robots signs of love are
shown. Suggesting robots with emotions abit like Ex
Machina. Wall-e is saved from his isolation when he
meets Eve, he has a companion. Eve saves Wall-e with a
kiss after his memory was wiped/
• This sub genre widens the audience and would typically
intrigue more females as a hybrid of sci fi and romance.
• Adventure- Wall-e is also considered adventure as the
whole point is Wall-e and Eve finding there way around
and solving the mystery of the seedling.
• Conventions of romance: flowers (the seedling),
isolation turning into having a companion (Eve and Wall-
e).
• Conventions of Adventure: Wall-e trying to jump over
the plant but gets injured, Wall-e gets crushed in a
garbage truck which he thought was a cleaning
procedure, trying to sort out the ship, Following Eve
across the galaxy.
• Having a hybrid opens up the audience. Romance intriguing females, Adventure appealing to males and the animated
Film appealing to children.
Enigma codes:
• Why is this robot here?
• Why is he so isolated?
• Where are all the humans?
• Why must Wall-e complete this clean up process?
• Who created Wall-e?
• Will he survive?
• What's the purpose of this plant?
Linear plot: • I think the film is linear as the
narrative is in chronological order.
• There is a clear pattern In what
happens and although the time
periods jump change in parts, the
plot is still consistent.
• The plot is also linear because its
actually quite a straight forward
story- a robot clearing up rubbish
and meeting another robot- there
is nothing involving flashbacks ect.
Humans abandon Earth on Axiom.
Wall e starts clean up process.
The Axiom captain dreams of returning to Earth.
The Axiom captain finds hope in the lonely plant.
EVE and the captain watch EVE's recordings of Earth.
Passengers prepare for the return to Earth.
Passengers prepare for the return to Earth
Axiom returns to earth.
The captain and passengers walk unsteadily from the Axiom
towards home.
Passengers nearly stumble on their way to Earth.
EVE reawakens WALL-E by holding his hand.
Plant-life revealed in film's closing.
Ending credits show Earth renewed.
EVE and WALL-E nurture a garden on Earth.
Binary opposites
• HUMAN VS ROBOTS.
• In the film there is a clear human vs robot divide. The humans abandon earth
for robots to fix the mess. Almost as though the humans are treating Wall E as
a slave.
• HUMAN VS NATURE.
• The humans clearly destroyed Earth, they turned it into landfill- consequently
destroying their own habitat so ventured into space where they became obese
and had to adapt due to gravity.
• RICH VS POOR.
• The humans who are wealthy enough live on the Axiom and escape earths
horrors.
Setting
• Although the majority of the film is set on Earth- the science fiction traits
are most definitely there. The world looks grey and polluted. It is made to
look toxic. Earth is projected to be a completely different place in the film
as to how it is now. It is highlighting moral threat of what the world could
turn into-inhabitable. The size of wall-e compared to the garbage sky
scrappers truly indicates the extent of disruption. It is truly a dystopian
future suggesting that future generations are at risk.
• The other main setting is the Axiom. Axiom literally means ‘a statement
or proposition on which an abstractly defined structure is based’. The
Axiom is a ship in which the humans who are wealthy enough live on.
They do nothing for themselves- the Axiom is very modern/high tech
which robots/machines that allow the humans to sit all day long. This
suggests that humans are becoming so lazy and selfish that they are
destroying their own race.
Mise en scene:Meeting of
Wall-e and eve The background is of fire
which highlights
the destruction Eve and Wall-
e are experiencing
consequently of the humans
selfish actions.
The aren’t
‘costumes’ as they are robots.
Being robots highlights the
genre of the movie. Also Eve
looks more constructed that
Wall-e, more modern, which
suggests that she has been sent
by someone
wealthy and has a strong
purpose for being there.
The shot is a medium shot. You get to see Eve and Wall-e
fairly close up which is essential to understand their
characters and their differences however you can also see
their surroundings. This is essentially Wall-e’s home and its
completely destroyed.
The camera is behind them which is effective
as it makes you feel in the moment and you can
see what the characters are supposed to be witnessing.
The camera is at eye level.
The light is very orange toned like
the fire which suggests the fire is the
only light left. Even the sun is destroyed
there is just no life anymore.
Wall-e looks as though he is
turning away from Eve.
This signifies the isolation Wall-
e has felt- he doesn't
know how to approach others.
Eve looks as though she is
staring into the fire which
indicates that she cant believe
what her eyes are showing her.
She doesn't seem to have even
noticed Wall-e which again
highlights his ‘invisibility’.

Soundtrack
Sound
• The majority of the film is actually silent diegetic wise
which makes Wall-e usual as silent films are definitely
not part of our era. This could actually be the ‘unique
selling point’ as the film had to have amazing effects in
order to make up for the missing sound and to keep
the audience intrigued. Obviously the odd sounds of
Wall-e and Eve ‘talking’ or Wall-e moving however
these are only minor. Its amazing that even with just a
‘bleep’ coming from Wall-e the audience understand
his emotions as the physical reactions have been
thought out so well.
• A huge part of the film is actually music- Eve and Wall-e
have many dance scenes which are the scenes which
highlight their love.
Song for effect
• The opening scene uses the song ‘put on your sunday clothes’ which is actually from
another film called ‘Hello Dolly’- but it simply sums up the film Wall-e so perfectly. Taking
the last few lines: We'll join the Astors At Tony Pastor’s And this I'm positive of That we
won't come home No we won't come home No we won't come home until we fall in love!
• Wall-e and Eve are trying to sort out Wall-e’s home and the humans home: Earth. They also
fall in love at the end. So even though this is the opening song it tells some of the story-
however its more of a enigma code as the audience wont nesacarily pick out the song in the
much detail. ‘Why will they need to get home?’
• The song also starts with lines about the brilliance of the world if you strive and look for it-
which is a really key message. If we lived outlives in a manner that was benefiting the Earth,
it could become a ‘magical place’- unlike what the humans have done in Wall-e. However
the song is also saying that this can be fixed (by Wall-e and Eve)!

Wall e

  • 2. Narrative • WALL-E, is the last robot left on Earth. Humanity essentially seems to have destroyed everything. He spends his days tidying up the planet, one piece of garbage at a time. But during 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality, and he's more than a little lonely. Then he spots Eve a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy. • I think this is a good plot as it is really easy to follow, this is essential in order for children to understand it and considering its an animation the target audience is children. However because the story line is very original and quite family orientated- there is no reason why people of all ages couldn’t enjoy it which again is essential for a child's movie as a child has to go to the cinema with someone! This makes the film a ‘blockbuster’ the larger the audience the more money. The better the story line the more conversations and the more interest in the film.
  • 3. Todorovian theory • Equilibrium: Wall-e alone on earth clearing up the mess humans have left- garbage. • A disruption: Shortly after arriving on Earth, EVE discovers the plant. She stores it and activates her homing beacon, then deactivates as she waits to be retrieved. • Realisation: When EVE is examined, the plant is missing. EVE and WALL-E witness GO- 4 trying to send the plant away aboard the escape pod. • Attempt to repair: Wall-e and eve are sent to a repair ward. Wall-e mistakes cleaning for Eve being harmed and crashes through the glass wall and disables the repair ward and accidently realises lots of robots. • Restoration: The AXIOM returns to Earth. EVE finds the parts to repair WALL-E; he returns to working order, but he has lost his memory. EVE is saddened, and gives WALL-E a hug and a “kiss.” The electric spark of the kiss re-boots WALL-E’s memory.
  • 4. Conventions • The main character is a robot- Wall E. Wall-e is often compared to r2d2 and c3po ‘famous robots’ from the blockbuster film star wars. • Spaceships • The setting of the film is mostly on a human less garbage site. The world looks completely abandoned which suggests that there has been a disaster- a futuristic prediction of society. • Moral threat: suggests humans have become lazy and obese and have allowed the world to become this way. We know this because of lines like ‘Blue- it’s the new red’; too lazy to change clothes. • Suggests life span of 150+ • Wall-e suggests that humanity has destroyed the environment which leads on to the idea of moral threat. • The robots are trying to figure out the point in living. Which in itself is a science question- what is the universe’s purpose? Why are we here? • The film is futuristic- clearly because of the robots and futuristic blue tones however it could also be set in the past. It is almost as though they are there before everything has been created, trying the discover the origin. • Wall e also plays on religious ideas as the robot with Wall e is named eve. Which could suggest ‘Adam and Eve’ who were the first people on earth in eyes of Catholics and Christians.
  • 5. Sub genre • Romance- Even though they are robots signs of love are shown. Suggesting robots with emotions abit like Ex Machina. Wall-e is saved from his isolation when he meets Eve, he has a companion. Eve saves Wall-e with a kiss after his memory was wiped/ • This sub genre widens the audience and would typically intrigue more females as a hybrid of sci fi and romance. • Adventure- Wall-e is also considered adventure as the whole point is Wall-e and Eve finding there way around and solving the mystery of the seedling. • Conventions of romance: flowers (the seedling), isolation turning into having a companion (Eve and Wall- e). • Conventions of Adventure: Wall-e trying to jump over the plant but gets injured, Wall-e gets crushed in a garbage truck which he thought was a cleaning procedure, trying to sort out the ship, Following Eve across the galaxy. • Having a hybrid opens up the audience. Romance intriguing females, Adventure appealing to males and the animated Film appealing to children.
  • 6. Enigma codes: • Why is this robot here? • Why is he so isolated? • Where are all the humans? • Why must Wall-e complete this clean up process? • Who created Wall-e? • Will he survive? • What's the purpose of this plant?
  • 7. Linear plot: • I think the film is linear as the narrative is in chronological order. • There is a clear pattern In what happens and although the time periods jump change in parts, the plot is still consistent. • The plot is also linear because its actually quite a straight forward story- a robot clearing up rubbish and meeting another robot- there is nothing involving flashbacks ect. Passengers prepare for the return to Earth Axiom returns to earth. The captain and passengers walk unsteadily from the Axiom towards home. Passengers nearly stumble on their way to Earth. EVE reawakens WALL-E by holding his hand. Plant-life revealed in film's closing. Ending credits show Earth renewed. EVE and WALL-E nurture a garden on Earth.
  • 8. Binary opposites • HUMAN VS ROBOTS. • In the film there is a clear human vs robot divide. The humans abandon earth for robots to fix the mess. Almost as though the humans are treating Wall E as a slave. • HUMAN VS NATURE. • The humans clearly destroyed Earth, they turned it into landfill- consequently destroying their own habitat so ventured into space where they became obese and had to adapt due to gravity. • RICH VS POOR. • The humans who are wealthy enough live on the Axiom and escape earths horrors.
  • 9. Setting • Although the majority of the film is set on Earth- the science fiction traits are most definitely there. The world looks grey and polluted. It is made to look toxic. Earth is projected to be a completely different place in the film as to how it is now. It is highlighting moral threat of what the world could turn into-inhabitable. The size of wall-e compared to the garbage sky scrappers truly indicates the extent of disruption. It is truly a dystopian future suggesting that future generations are at risk. • The other main setting is the Axiom. Axiom literally means ‘a statement or proposition on which an abstractly defined structure is based’. The Axiom is a ship in which the humans who are wealthy enough live on. They do nothing for themselves- the Axiom is very modern/high tech which robots/machines that allow the humans to sit all day long. This suggests that humans are becoming so lazy and selfish that they are destroying their own race.
  • 10. Mise en scene:Meeting of Wall-e and eve The background is of fire which highlights the destruction Eve and Wall- e are experiencing consequently of the humans selfish actions. The aren’t ‘costumes’ as they are robots. Being robots highlights the genre of the movie. Also Eve looks more constructed that Wall-e, more modern, which suggests that she has been sent by someone wealthy and has a strong purpose for being there. The shot is a medium shot. You get to see Eve and Wall-e fairly close up which is essential to understand their characters and their differences however you can also see their surroundings. This is essentially Wall-e’s home and its completely destroyed. The camera is behind them which is effective as it makes you feel in the moment and you can see what the characters are supposed to be witnessing. The camera is at eye level. The light is very orange toned like the fire which suggests the fire is the only light left. Even the sun is destroyed there is just no life anymore. Wall-e looks as though he is turning away from Eve. This signifies the isolation Wall- e has felt- he doesn't know how to approach others. Eve looks as though she is staring into the fire which indicates that she cant believe what her eyes are showing her. She doesn't seem to have even noticed Wall-e which again highlights his ‘invisibility’.
  • 11. Camera Shot: Zooming in Camera Angle: High Duration: 4 seconds Sound: Non diegetic song Camera Shot: Closing in Camera Angle: Eye level Duration: 8 seconds Sound: Non diegetic song Camera Shot: Panning forwards Camera Angle: High Duration: 5 seconds Sound: Non diegetic song Camera Shot: Medium shot Camera Angle: Low eye level Duration: 4 seconds Sound: Diegetic: Song and sound of Wall-e moving robotically. Camera Shot: Close up Camera Angle: Low tilted up Duration: 3 seconds Sound: Diegetic: Song and sounds of Wall-e crushing garbage. Camera Shot: Panning Camera Angle: High tilted down Duration: 6 seconds Sound: Song stops until wall-e appears back in scene like its coming from wall-e so sound becomes diegetic
  • 13. Sound • The majority of the film is actually silent diegetic wise which makes Wall-e usual as silent films are definitely not part of our era. This could actually be the ‘unique selling point’ as the film had to have amazing effects in order to make up for the missing sound and to keep the audience intrigued. Obviously the odd sounds of Wall-e and Eve ‘talking’ or Wall-e moving however these are only minor. Its amazing that even with just a ‘bleep’ coming from Wall-e the audience understand his emotions as the physical reactions have been thought out so well. • A huge part of the film is actually music- Eve and Wall-e have many dance scenes which are the scenes which highlight their love.
  • 14. Song for effect • The opening scene uses the song ‘put on your sunday clothes’ which is actually from another film called ‘Hello Dolly’- but it simply sums up the film Wall-e so perfectly. Taking the last few lines: We'll join the Astors At Tony Pastor’s And this I'm positive of That we won't come home No we won't come home No we won't come home until we fall in love! • Wall-e and Eve are trying to sort out Wall-e’s home and the humans home: Earth. They also fall in love at the end. So even though this is the opening song it tells some of the story- however its more of a enigma code as the audience wont nesacarily pick out the song in the much detail. ‘Why will they need to get home?’ • The song also starts with lines about the brilliance of the world if you strive and look for it- which is a really key message. If we lived outlives in a manner that was benefiting the Earth, it could become a ‘magical place’- unlike what the humans have done in Wall-e. However the song is also saying that this can be fixed (by Wall-e and Eve)!
