This document defines and compares rectangular prisms, cubes, and the volume of each solid figure. It provides the formulas to calculate volume as length times width times height for rectangular prisms and side cubed for cubes. An example calculation finds the volume of a rectangular prism that is 10cm by 3cm by 4cm to be 120cm3 by using the volume formula of length times width times height.

2. Prism
Definition:
A three-dimensional solid that has two
congruent and parallel faces that are
polygons. The remaining faces are
rectangles. Prisms are named by their faces.

Definition:
A three-dimensional solid that has two

4. Cube
Definition:
A rectangular prism in which all faces are
congruent squares.

5. Volume
Definition:
The measure in cubic units of the interior of
a solid figure; or the space enclosed by a
solid figure.
Ex. How much sand will it hold?

6. Volume of a Rectangular
Prism
Ex:
How much sand would I need to fill the
inside of a particular rectangular prism?
Formula:
V = L*W*h

7. Volume of a Cube
Ex:
How much sand would I need to fill the
inside of a particular cube?
Formula:
V = s3

8. Measuring Volume.
Volume is measured in cubic centimetres (also called cubic centimetres).
Here is a cubic centimetre
It is a cube which measures 1cm

We will now see how to calculate the volume of various shapes.

We have now got to find how many layers of 1cm cubes we can place in the
rectangular prism:
We can fit in 4 layers.
Volume = 3 x 10 x 4
Volume = 120cm3
That means that we can place 120 of our cubes measuring a centimetre in all
directions inside rectangullar prism
