VOICE OVER IP
Abstract
Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is
a technology that enables one to
make and receive phone calls
through the Internet instead of using
the traditional analogy PSTN (Public
Switched Telephone Network) lines.
INTRODUCTION
• Encode audio & video with audio codes & video codes
• It allows 2 way voice transmission over broad band connection
• VoIP started with company called vocal tec in 1995
• The scope of communication
Pc to pc
Pc to phone
Phone to phone
Ip phone to phone
Ip phone to Ip phone
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VOIP & PSTN
•VOIP
• All channels carried over one Internet connection
• Features such as call waiting, Caller ID and so on
are usually included free with service
• Upgrades usually requires only bandwidth and
software upgrades
• Long distance is often included in regular monthly
price
• Lose power, lose phone service without power
backup in place
• 911 emergency calls cannot always be traced to a
specific geographic location
•PSTN(Public Switched Telephone Network)
• Dedicated Lines
• Features such as call waiting, Caller ID and so on
are usually available at an extra cost
• Can be upgraded or expanded with new
equipment and line provisioning
• Long distance is usually per minute or bundled
minute subscription
• Hardwired landline phones (those without an
adapter) usually remain active during power
outage
• When placing a 911 call it can be traced to your
location

FUTURE OF VOIP
• Continued growth is expected inVoIP service
• Strong performance from market competitors
ADVANTAGES
• Lower call Cost
• Phone line Installation
•Voice Quality
• Mobility
DISADVANTAGES
• Power Outages/ Emergencies
• Latency
• Difficult to trace a call

NORTH CAROLINA HOSPITAL
– Use of intercom system
– Eliminated use of intercom system
– Rolling out a wireless handset
– Efficiency amongst nurses

INDIANA UNIVERSITY
– Old-school voice-messaging system
– Different handsets for Voice message and Email
– Adapting VOIP system

CONCLUSION
• low cost alternative for communication.
• companies that depend on international communication are
making use of such services in order to lower their operational cost.
• With all of the improvements continually going on withVOIP, it will soon
be accepted by everyone as an alternative to PSTN
