2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

MELO SPREADS THE WORD
far and wide about TriVita
2. An Important Message for Women
Take care of yourself first
by michael r. ellison, ceO & founder of TriVita, inc.
Let me continue the theme of women’s health which I
introduced in the October catalog. When it comes to
nurturing, I encourage all women to embrace the “me
first” rule. I know that may be hard to accept because
mothers tend to put the needs of their children first. This
nurturing instinct begins when that firstborn arrives in
your arms for the first time. Being an outdoor lover, I
have encountered the instincts of a mother bear with
cubs, and that will put the punctuation on the thought
that a mother’s instinct is to care for her children without
even thinking about her own well-being.
But, at some point in life, there has to be an understanding and acceptance that only when a
woman nurtures herself can she sustain long-term nurturing of others. In our world of demands,
there are not many who are taking personal responsibility to ensure that they are nurtured for
great health and well-being. You must attend to your needs yourself.
Just to prime the pump of thought a little more on this subject: Would you want to fly with
a pilot who cared much for his passengers, but cared little for his own health and mental
alertness? If you had a surgeon who cared for his patients but cared little about himself and
lacked the proper rest and nutritional support for mental alertness and stable hands, would
you want him to perform surgery on you?
Caring for oneself must be the top priority in life so that you can lead a long life filled with
wellness and can contribute to the lives of others. Why is it easier to think of caring for others
whether in the home or on the job than it is to care for oneself? At TriVita®, we believe the 10
Essentials for Health and Wellness must lead and guide the lives of both women and men. They
cover the spectrum of essentials which can help you create wellness for your life. One of our
essentials is to eat a nutrient-rich diet. To aid you in your targeted nutrition, we have developed
wonderful, science-based products that are highly absorbable and will help your body keep you well.
Now in our 60s, my wife Susan and I have dreams of doing much around the world, and
we know that only if we have wellness, will we see our dreams fulfilled. We depend on the
products of TriVita for all our nutritional supplement support. We have both had amazing
results overcoming health challenges with TriVita products. When we traveled across North
America introducing Nopalea™, many women wanted to know what Susan takes and the
dosages she has adopted as a daily regimen. Here is her own testimony of how she nurtures
herself and supports her wellness program:

e’re excited to bring you this
month’s VitaJournal in celebration
of women’s health. In my own life,
I lost my grandmother, aunt and cousin, all on my
mother’s side, to breast cancer. I’ve also lost my
father and brother to heart disease. Knowing this
strong history is in my family gives me more than
enough reason to do my part in helping prevent
a devastating illness from attacking my life. I am
extremely timely in my annual well-woman exams,
mammograms and bone density tests, as well as any
other testing that is required as we age. I feel very
blessed with my good health, and am very happy
with this stage of my life. I do know, however,
that I must nourish my body and treat it properly.
My favorite regimen involves my hormone
health. I’ve found the magic formula that works
for me in helping to prevent hot flashes and night
sweats is two TriVita OmegaPrime® soft gels and
two Balanced Woman® capsules three times a
day along with one Vitamin E soft gel once a day.
This combination works great for me, and I can
tell when I miss a few days. Recently at a well-
woman exam, my doctor tried to convince me
that even though my hormone levels were still ok,
I should consider going on hormone replacement
therapy. After I chimed in with what I take daily
to keep my hormones balanced, she stopped and
said “OK, never mind – maybe I should take what
you’re taking!”
Since we are physical, emotional and spiritual
beings – it is crucial that we nourish each area.
You might remember our interview back in the
May VitaJournal with Pastor Judith Crist. We’re
excited to bring her back this month in a two-part
message on women and spirituality (page 18). Dr.
Judy also helps educate us in her monthly feature
on the various stages women go through and how
they affect not only women’s emotional health,
but that of the men in their lives as well (page 19).
Whatever stage of life you are in, it is our hope
that you love and nurture yourself. I also hope
that you share the information you learn from this
VitaJournal with others, and take advantage of the
special savings on our featured women’s products.

SUCCESS STORIES
“My X-rays showed no osteoporosis.”
“Thanks to TriVita, I no longer
have osteoporosis, osteopenia
(pre-osteoporosis) or weakening
of the bone. Several years
ago, my doctor said that my
osteoporosis was so severe
that he wanted me to give
myself shots in the stomach every day. I am a
strong believer in a more natural approach.
So in November of 2006 I started taking Bone
Builder and six months later I appeared in
the VitaJournal sharing my story about how
it helped my body ease the pain. In February
2009, I was in an automobile accident. My
doctor requested X-rays and when I met with
him, he asked me what I had been taking
because my X-rays showed no osteoporosis.”

any people
don’t realize
it, but bone
is living, growing
tissue. It is made
mostly of collagen, a
protein that provides
a soft framework, and
calcium phosphate, a mineral that adds
strength and hardens the framework.
This combination of collagen and
calcium makes bone strong yet flexible
enough to handle stress.
Throughout our lifetime, old bone is removed
(resorption) and new bone is added to the
skeleton (formation). During childhood
and teenage years, new bone is added faster
than old bone is removed. As a result, bones
become larger, heavier and denser. Bone
formation continues at a pace faster than
resorption until peak bone mass (maximum
bone density and strength) is reached, usually
before age 30.
After age 30, bone resorption slowly begins
to exceed bone formation. In women, bone
loss for women is most rapid in the first few
years after menopause but persists into the
postmenopausal years. Osteoporosis (the weak
bone disease) develops when bone resorption
occurs too quickly or if replacement occurs too
slowly. Osteoporosis is more likely to develop
if you did not reach optimal bone mass during
your bone-building years.
Risk factors
Certain risk factors are linked to the
development of osteoporosis or contribute
to an individual’s likelihood of developing
the disease. Many people with osteoporosis
have several of these risk factors, but others
who develop osteoporosis have no identified
risk factors. There are some risk factors that
you cannot change, and others that you can.
Risk factors you cannot change:
• Ethnicity – Caucasian and Asian
women are at greatest risk. African-
American and Latino women have a
lower, but significant risk.
• Gender – Your chances of developing
osteoporosis are greater if you are a

woman. Women have less bone tissue and
lose bone more rapidly than men because
of the changes involved in menopause.
• Age – The older you are, the greater your
risk of osteoporosis. Your bones become
less dense and weaker as you age.
• Body size – Small, thin-boned women
are at greater risk.
• Family history – Susceptibility to
fracture may be, in part, hereditary.
People whose parents have a history of
fractures also seem to have reduced bone
mass and may be at risk for fractures.
Risk factors you can change:
• Sex hormones – Abnormal absence
of menstrual periods (amenorrhea),
low estrogen level (menopause) and
low testosterone level in men.
• Get help for anorexia.
• A lifetime diet low in calcium
and Vitamin D.
• Use of certain medications, such as
glucocorticoids or some anticonvulsants.
It is important to discuss the use of
these drugs with your physician, and
not to stop or alter your medication
dose on your own.
• An inactive lifestyle or extended bed rest.
• Stop smoking cigarettes and
drinking soft drinks.
• Excessive use of alcohol.
Prevention
To reach optimal peak bone mass and continue
building new bone tissue as you get older, there
are several factors you should consider:
Calcium. Calcium needs change during
one’s lifetime. The body’s demand for calcium
is greater during childhood and adolescence,
when the skeleton is growing rapidly, and during
pregnancy and breastfeeding. Postmenopausal
women and older men also need to consume
more calcium. This may be due to inadequate
amounts of Vitamin D, which is necessary for
intestinal absorption of calcium. Also, as we
age, our bodies become less efficient at absorbing
calcium and other nutrients. Older adults
also are more likely to have chronic medical
problems and to use medications that may
impair calcium absorption. See recommended
calcium intakes listed at right.
Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an important
role in calcium absorption and in bone health.
It is synthesized in the skin through exposure
to sunlight. While many people are able to
obtain enough Vitamin D naturally, studies
show that Vitamin D production decreases
in the elderly, in people who are housebound
and during the winter. These individuals
may require Vitamin D supplementation to
ensure a daily intake of between 400 to 1000
International Units of Vitamin D.
Exercise. Like muscle, bone is living tissue
that responds to exercise by becoming stronger.
The best exercise for your bones is weight-
bearing exercise that forces you to work against
gravity. These exercises include walking, hiking,
jogging, stair-climbing, weight training, tennis
and dancing.
Detection
Osteoporosis is often called the “silent disease”
because bone loss occurs without symptoms.
Following a comprehensive medical assessment,
your doctor may recommend that you have your
bone mass measured. Bone mineral density (BMD)
tests measure bone density in the spine, wrist
and/or hip (the most common sites of fractures due
to osteoporosis), while others measure bone in the
heel or hand. These tests are painless, non-invasive
and safe. Bone density tests can:
• Detect low bone density before a
fracture occurs.
• Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
if you have already fractured.
• Predict your chances of fracturing
in the future.
• Determine your rate of bone loss and/or
monitor the effects of treatment if the test
is conducted at intervals of a year or more.
Conclusion
An inadequate supply of calcium over a life-
time is thought to play a significant role in
contributing to the development of osteoporosis.
National nutrition surveys have shown that
many people consume less than half the amount
of calcium recommended to build and maintain
healthy bones. Good sources of calcium include:
• Low fat dairy products, such as milk,
yogurt, cheese and ice cream
• Dark green, leafy vegetables, such as
broccoli and collard greens
• Bok choy and spinach
• Sardines and salmon with bones
• Tofu
• Almonds
• Calcium-fortified foods, such as orange
juice, cereals and breads
Depending upon how much calcium you get
each day from food, you may need to take a
calcium supplement.

H
ow are you? It’s such a
simple question, yet it
can cover so many aspects
of health, both emotional and
physical. As we at TriVita®
celebrate women’s health this
month, I’d like to look at some of
the emotional aspects of health,
hormones and Vitamin B-12.
We know that all living things have cycles,
and men as well as women are subject to
fluctuations in hormones and emotions.
For women especially, though, the ebb
and flow of hormones before, during and
after menopause can have real, troublesome
emotional symptoms. These can include
feelings of sadness, irritability and anger,
fatigue and mood swings. In some cases, I’d
say that the problem may be at least partly
due to a B-12 deficiency. (Of course, your
own healthcare professional is the best source
for medical guidance.)
B-12 and mood:
a strong connection
Thanks to rigorous studies by my colleagues
in medical research, we know that people
who have a B-12 deficiency can suffer from
a range of emotional/mental symptoms,
including mood swings, mental confusion
and forgetfulness. That’s why one of the first
things I do when people complain of these
problems is make sure they are getting enough
of the essential vitamins like B-12.
If you’re over 40, a strict vegetarian, or have
thyroid, liver or kidney problems, you’re at
risk for B-12 deficiency. As we age, our bodies
may become less able to absorb some vitamins
efficiently, especially in the case of Vitamin
B-12. Without enough B-12, other vitamins
like folate and B-6 cannot function normally
within the body.
Youth is no protector against
B-12 deficiency
It’s important to note that older adults
aren’t the only ones who are at risk of B-12
deficiencies. While it’s true that the body’s
ability to absorb B vitamins from food
decreases with age, younger people can be
deficient, too. One study looked at three age
groups, ages 26 to 65 plus, and found that
a consistent number of people in all three
groups had B-12 deficiencies. Even more
interesting: Regardless of age, those who
didn’t take a B-12 supplement were twice as
likely to be B-12 deficient as those who did.
So even if you’re a woman years away from
menopause, it’s possible that you’re not
getting enough B-12. Because of the known
link between B-12 and mood, it’s also possible
that this gap is worsening symptoms of fluctu-
ating hormones.
If you or someone in your life is struggling
with mood issues, low energy and related
symptoms, I urge you to consider making
healthy changes. It’s important to exercise, eat
right and do all you can to promote your own
physical and emotional health. For maximum
results from supplementation, I recommend

TriVita’s B-12 products, which offer
maximum absorption.
As a doctor, I know the importance of
maintaining appropriate levels of these
essential vitamins, especially Vitamin B-12.
That’s why I applaud those who supplement
their healthy diets with TriVita Sublingual
B-12 products, and encourage others to see
how they might benefit, too.
Unlike injections, or pills that you swallow,
Sublingual B-12 dissolves under the tongue for
maximum absorption and maximum benefit.
The answer to “How are you?” could change
for the better, once your B-12 levels put you
in the mood for health.
SUCCESS STORIES
“I have more energy at work...
my mental clarity and memory
have improved.”
“Super Sublingual B-12
is a product that I will
not ever go without. I
take my Super B every
single day. I work four,
10-hour days every week.
When my alarm goes
off on Tuesdays through
Fridays, I’m up at 4:00 a.m. Super B helps give
me the energy to get right into my routine:
first I stretch. Then, I run in place while moving
my arms as if I were using a jump rope. Next, I
work out with my four-pound sport hula hoop
for a few minutes. This is an amazing morning
wake-up and it’s good for me. Super B-12 helps
give me the energy to go like this.
I am over 50, yet everyone at my workplace
wants to know what it is that keeps me
working like I do. I tell them it’s Super B-12,
which has helped with more than just my
energy level. I used to forget things more often.
Now, if I am trying to remember something, I
notice that it comes right to me. So, not only
do I have more energy at work, but also my
mental clarity and memory have improved.
I never miss taking my Super B, and I tell
everyone at work how wonderful it is. My
husband also takes Super B-12 and really
likes it. We love TriVita products!”

riVita’s
Bone Builder
contains a
unique family of
ingredients called Bone
Growth Factor (BGF).
These additional
ingredients are like
a formula within a formula. BGF
addresses the disparity between how
much bone you lose and how much you
make every day. How does it work?
Bone cells have a specific life span. When their
life is over they die. Cells called osteoclasts tear
down dead bone and recycle the minerals for
use in the next generation of bone cells. This
happens every single day of our lives.
How your body changes after age 30
When we are young, the amount of bone we
make exceeds the amount we lose. Cells called
osteoblasts “blast” out new bone at an amazing
rate. All we have to do is give the osteoblasts
enough fuel in the form of nutrients and they
do their job of making bone. After about age 30,
the building-up work of osteoblasts is outpaced
by the tearing-down work of osteoclasts.
Collagen and minerals are leached from our
bones in a sort of “deficit spending” routine that
may leave us with porous bones – osteoporosis.
Normally there are enough osteoblasts and
osteoclasts in your bones to keep them healthy.
The failure of osteoblasts to “blast” out enough
bone to keep up with the loss of bone cells is
mainly because of two deficiencies: not
enough nutrients and not enough signaling
hormones. These signaling hormones tell the
osteoblast to pack the bone crystals tightly
for lasting strength.
Collagen’s essential role in
bone health
We think of bones as mostly calcium. That’s
true to an extent; the main mineral in bones
is calcium. But more calcium is not the only
answer to building healthy bones. In fact, I
like to say that calcium is really just a dumb
rock. Collagen (the same thing that keeps
your skin young and healthy) organizes calcium,
magnesium, phosphorus, boron and many
other minerals into crystals that provide
compression strength to your bones. Further,
collagen provides tensile strength to bones
that allows you to bend and stretch, dance
and even fall without injury.
Collagen is the brains and calcium is the brawn
in healthy bones.
Bone Builder’s key ingredients
TriVita’s Bone Builder contains all of the
minerals required for building healthy bones.
It also contains all of the collagen needed
for “blasting” out new bone matrix. Further,
TriVita’s Bone Builder contains Bone Growth
Factor (BGF). These ingredients signal the
osteoblast that it is time to make new bone.
They tell the bone cells that they are young
again and that they need to bulk up for a long
and healthy life. Ipriflavone, a plant hormone
found in legumes and red clover, tells the
osteoblast to make new bone during the day.
5-Methoxy-tryptamine (related to melatonin)
tells the osteoblast to make new bone during
the night. Boron, a mineral but also a signaling
hormone, tells the osteoblast to pack the bone
crystals tightly for lasting strength.
An interesting point about human growth
hormone (HgH) and bone cells: HgH is turned
down and then completely turned off by stress
hormones associated with fight or flight or by
depression hormones. It seems that muscles,
bones, organs and even brain cells prefer to live
in a stress-free environment!
Bone Growth Factor contains the protein
GABA (gamma amino butyric acid). This is the
“anti-stress” amino acid found in abundance
in a relaxed brain. It is also found in the bones
of people when they are stress-free. We added
GABA to Bone Growth Factor to send a
message of tranquility to both bone and brain.
TriVita’s Bone Builder also contains Vitamin D
which is both a vitamin and a signaling hormone.
This important nutrient is needed for bone
health, heart health, a healthy immune system
and healthy blood sugar. At one time we were
convinced that 400 IU of Vitamin D was enough
to keep us healthy. Recent science tells us that we
need more – much more – if we are to resist the
bone erosion common after age 30. So, we added
1,000 IU of Vitamin D to make sure people over
30 get enough of this important nutrient.
Healthy bones last a lifetime. TriVita’s Bone
Builder with Bone Growth Factor can help
supply the nutrients your body needs to blast
out new bone every active, healthy day of
your life!
Enjoy a lifetime
of healthy bones

Women: It’s time to keep an eye on your health
Learn which health screenings you need –
and when you need them
Screening timeline
Although our individual health needs are unique, we can use established guidelines to help keep
an eye on our health. Review the information below from the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services Office on Women’s Health to determine which health screenings you may need.
This chart is meant to be used as a general guide: don’t wait if you are currently experiencing
problems or have concerns based on family or personal health history. As always, discuss your
individual needs with your healthcare provider.
Although it is no substitute for a clinical exam,
breast self-exams can be performed at home
each month. Cut out this Breast Self-Exam (BSE)
information and put it up where you will see it
(e.g., bathroom, bedroom). Perform the exam
when your breasts are not tender or swollen,
at least two days after the end of your period.
1. Lie down and place
your right hand
behind your head.
With the 3 pads of
the middle fingers
of your left hand,
use small circular
motions to feel for lumps in the right breast.
A firm ridge in the lower curve of your breast
is normal.
2. Use light, medium and firm pressure on all
breast tissue.
3. Next, examine the breast using an up-and-
down pattern. Imagine a straight line drawn
from your armpit down to the top of your ribs.
Start there and move across the breast to the
breastbone. Be sure to check all breast tissue.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 on your left breast.
5. Stand in front of the
mirror and press
your hands firmly
down on your hips.
Look for dimpling,
redness, scaliness of
the nipple or breast
skin, or any changes
in your breasts.
6. Examine your
underarms from a
seated or standing
position. Only raise
your arms slightly
so you can better
feel the area.
If you notice any changes in your breasts,
contact your healthcare provider. Remember,
women under 40 should get a clinical breast exam
every 3 years and women over 40 should get them
yearly. If you are over 40, talk to your healthcare
provider about scheduling a mammogram.

hree little letters may be
having a big impact on the
#1 disease threat to women:
heart disease. The letters are “CRP,”
and they stand for a protein found in
the blood called C-reactive protein.
If emerging science stays on track
with CRP, it could become as well
known as cholesterol in the battle
for keeping hearts healthy.
The big deal about CRP is that it’s a marker
for inflammation. What’s the big deal about
inflammation? More and more, it’s linked with
the risk of heart disease. Like cholesterol, a
certain amount of inflammation is natural and
good: it’s how the body repairs itself after an
injury, as when you cut your finger and it heals
within days. But chronic inflammation, when
the body gets “stuck” in this repair process, is
thought to be the problem behind a growing
number of ailments.
So if chronic inflammation can be controlled
or reduced, it appears that the outlook for
managing heart disease, especially for women,
could be bright. This makes Nopalea™, the
breakthrough wellness drink that fights
inflammation, even more important to
everyone committed to their own health.
Female fatalities tied
to high CRP levels
Important research in recent years indicates that
high levels of CRP are linked with high levels
of risk for heart disease. In fact, it seems that
high levels of CRP are even more accurate than
cholesterol levels in predicting heart troubles.
The Physicians Health Study, an ongoing,
25-year clinical trial involving 18,000 supposedly
healthy doctors, was the first major study to
show this link. It revealed that high CRP levels
tripled the risk of heart attack.
Another major study, the Harvard Women’s
Health Study concluded in 2005, built an even
stronger case about CRP, heart disease risk and
women. Almost 40,000 healthy women age 45
and over were studied for three years to monitor
12 different markers of inflammation. One of the
main results: CRP was the leading indicator of
heart disease risk. In the group with the highest
CRP levels, the women were over four times
more likely to have died from heart disease, or
had a heart attack or stroke, than those in lower
CRP groups.
CRP and inflammation
gaining attention
The importance of CRP in heart health is
gaining recognition and attention. While it
isn’t yet a standard part of wellness exams, a test
for CRP (called High-Sensitivity C-Reactive
Protein, or “hs-CRP” test) is recognized as
necessary in some cases.
The prestigious National Heart, Lung and
Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes
of Health, notes that “Doctors use standard CRP
tests to check for inflammation and autoimmune
disease. Your doctor may order an hs-CRP test,
along with other tests, to see whether you’re
at increased risk for heart disease.” (Be sure to
check your health insurance coverage if you’re
interested in this test.)
When high levels of CRP are detected by an
hs-CRP blood test, it signals that the body
is in a raised state of inflammation. And
as many VitaJournal readers already know,
fighting inflammation is a key reason to take
Nopalea every day. Its exclusive blend of rare
antioxidants, called Betalains, plus other
healthful nutrients, help the body fight back
against inflammation.
If inflammation is the problem,
Nopalea is a solution
More and more, medical science is zeroing in
on inflammation as the culprit behind so many
illnesses and ailments. And the astonishing
benefits that Nopalea is bringing to so many
people demonstrate how effective it can be
in helping the body ease pain, detoxify and
protect against premature aging.
“Daily servings of Nopalea can provide you
with the Betalains that help put out the fire
of inflammation and rescue cells under attack...”
notes Brazos Minshew, TriVita’s Chief Science
Officer. “Further,” he adds, “Betalains act to
clean up the dead cells and help to protect
them from becoming a target for sickness.”
Combating one of the signs of premature aging
– wrinkles – may be yet another benefit of
Nopalea. “Since Nopalea targets inflammation,
aids detoxification and optimizes cell health,”
says Minshew, “it can help slow down the
process of premature aging.” A recent feature on
inflammation in a prominent women’s magazine
notes that “...the spots and wrinkles that we all
recognize as aging are the results of the skin’s
inflammation response.” When the skin tries
to correct against the daily attacks of pollution,
stress, too much sun and allergy triggers, this
protective reaction can end up as skin that looks
creased and splotchy before its time.
Compared to the dangers of heart disease,
naturally, a few wrinkles are nothing. But the
possible damage that chronic inflammation can
inflict on the skin could go far beyond vanity.
One noted dermatologist recognized for his
research into inflammation has been quoted as
saying, “There is a line of thinking that certain
kinds of repeated inflammation can create a
nurturing environment for skin cancers.”
Clearly, chronic inflammation and its role
in many illnesses and conditions is worthy
of more study. But those who are already
experiencing the wellness benefits of Nopalea
aren’t waiting around.

“I couldn’t hold a cell phone more
than 30 seconds... I just talked for
15 minutes with no pain!”
“In 2001, I had shoulder
surgery due to working with
horses. Since then I’d get
a burning sensation in my
shoulder when it was held
in a certain position, like
holding a cell phone with
my right hand, for example.
The longest I could hold a
cell phone to my ear would
be about 30 seconds and
then would come the excruciating, burning pain
that would last for a few minutes – until recently.
So I have a headset now.
My brother Todd and his wife, who introduced
me to Nopalea, spent time talking to me about
Nopalea at our recent family reunion. Let me tell
you, what convinced me was how excited my
brother was about the potential of the product.
He has never gotten involved in anything like
this, ever. Even so, at the beginning I was a little
skeptical, probably like many others, as I started
taking Nopalea.
While traveling recently (my roommate driving),
I called my mom; my headset was dead so I
hand-held the phone with my right hand and
during my conversation with my mom I noticed
I had gone past the 30 seconds. So I thought to
myself, ‘Oh my gosh, my shoulder isn’t burning
yet,’ so I continued to talk. Fifteen minutes later
the conversation was ended... I FELT NO PAIN
AT ALL!! I told my roommate, ‘I just talked for
15 minutes with NO pain!’ I was shocked and
excited at the same time. To me this is a HUGE
deal, as I am a dog groomer and have problems
with that shoulder all the time.
I planned to spread the word anyway, but now
that I am my own testimonial, I am that much
more motivated to help others. Thank you!”
MARnie P. – MonuMent, co
“At 81, I’m beginning to feel like a real
person again.”
“This is my second
testimonial for Nopalea.
In case you missed my
first one, I had only been
taking it a short time and
the benefits were amazing.
I am now on my second
bottle and have the third one on order. My aches,
pains and swelling have almost vanished.
I am an 81-year-old great-grandmother, beginning
to feel like a real person again. Life has begun to
be so good.
Again, my friends, neighbors and family see a
different me. If others see the difference, imagine
the difference I am experiencing.
If you have any doubt, just let Nopalea do for
you what it has done for me. Give Nopalea a
chance. I will feel rewarded for guiding you
to a life-changing experience.
Praises and thanks to TriVita for introducing
me to Nopalea.”

W
hen you think about
obesity, the last thing that
probably comes to mind
is the state of the economy. But it
turns out that the health conditions
stemming from obesity – heart
disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood
pressure, certain cancers and more
– are putting a strain on the overall
economy. A report in the July 2009
journal Health Affairs estimates the
medical costs of obesity at $147 billion
per year, up from $78.5 billion in 1998.
According to a July 2009 report issued by the
Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF),
adult obesity rates increased in 23 states and
did not decrease in any states in the past year.
Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity at
32.5%, and Colorado had the lowest at 18.9%.
Obesity rates exceeded 25% in 31 states and
20% in 49 states and Washington, D.C. Some
additional, troubling findings:
• Researchers suspect that the current
economic crisis may contribute to
the obesity epidemic. Food prices are
expected to rise (especially healthy
foods), making it more difficult for
people to eat a healthy diet. Also,
depression, anxiety and stress, which
are linked to obesity, are increasing.
• Childhood obesity has more than
tripled since 1980.
• Baby Boomers have higher obesity rates
than previous generations, which could
significantly raise the costs to Medicare
and Medicaid.
According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention National Center for Health
Statistics, more than one-third of U.S. adults
were obese in 2005-2006. Obesity is defined
as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more.
What causes overweight
and obesity?
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
lists the causes of overweight and obesity as:
• Not having energy balance: in other
words, consuming more calories than
you burn
• Physical inactivity: this can be
because of too much time spent in
front of computers and TVs, modern
conveniences, lack of physical education
classes in schools
• An environment that encourages
inactivity: lack of neighborhood
sidewalks and safe places for recrea-
tion, long work hours, oversized food
portions, lack of access to healthy
foods, food advertising
• Genes and family history
• Health conditions: underactive
thyroid, Cushing’s syndrome, polycystic
ovarian syndrome
• Medicines: certain medicines such
as corticosteroids, antidepressants and
medicines for seizures may contribute
to weight gain
• Emotional factors: emotional overeating
can contribute to overweight and obesity
• Smoking
• Age: age-related muscle loss can
slow down the rate at which your
body burns calories
• Pregnancy: weight gain during
pregnancy is sometimes hard to shed
after the baby is born
• Lack of sleep: studies find that the less
people sleep, the more likely they are
to be overweight or obese
Healthy weight saves your money –
and your health
The best defense against high healthcare costs
is ensuring you reach and maintain a healthy
weight. The National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute suggests that you can help prevent or
treat overweight and obesity if you:
• Follow a healthful diet, while keeping
your calorie needs in mind
• Are physically active
• Limit the time you spend being
physically inactive

SUCCESS STORIES
“My goal was to lose 10 pounds of fat
and gain 10 pounds of muscle in one
year’s time. Among friends and family,
my goal was met with skepticism (I have
been trying to lose ‘just 10 pounds’ for
years). I admit it was ambitious. But
desperate times call for desperate
measures: hypothyroidism,
dealing with menopause
(never getting a whole
night’s sleep),
having a desk
job and not
getting any
younger... you
get the picture.
I met with a
professional trainer to
measure my body fat so I
would know how much muscle
mass I was gaining. He thought
a 10-pound muscle gain for
a woman of my age and
circumstance was once again,
ambitious. He didn’t know
about Leanology Capsules!
I took six capsules per
day, mostly with lunch
and dinner. To make a
long story short, the 10
pounds of fat was no
problem. I lost the 10
pounds in one month.
It was concentrated
around my middle and
hips and surprisingly,
neck. In that first month,
I went from a size 10 to
a size 6, while my shirt
size didn’t change. What
did change about my
shirt was the fit. My
daughter was the first
to comment on the
shape of my neck
and ‘jowls.’ Then
others followed. They noticed a
slimming of my throat and neck.
After two months, I was right on
target with muscle gain. I took a
Pilates class through the community
college. It was wonderful: deep
breathing, stretching, core
strengthening. With my
weight training, I lifted
nothing over 15 pounds.
I lifted smaller weights,
repeating an exercise for
an entire minute.
I had energy and people
noticed! They said I
carried myself differently,
walked differently. My
boss commented that
I was more productive.
I started riding my bike
to work and around town.
And my wardrobe doubled
in size... I was able to share
clothes with my 18-year-
old daughter!
A person’s self-confidence
should not be wrapped
up in what they look like.
It should be about who
you are, what you are.
But when you set a goal
and reach it, you say,
‘I am a person who gets
things done!’ You begin to view
yourself differently. Then you
begin to act differently, and who
you are changes. Once you say,
‘I am a person worth investing in,’
other personal issues become
easier to tackle. And after investing
in yourself you have something to
share with others.”

and healthy. Remember, too, to have everyone
take it easy on the candy; below, you’ll find some
ideas on treats that won’t play tricks on well-
being. Let this holiday acronym from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, “SAFE
HALLOWEEN,” guide you through the season.
S Swords, knives and related costume
accessories should be short, soft
and flexible.
A Avoid having children go trick-or-
treating alone. They should walk in
groups, or travel with a trusted adult.
F Fasten reflective tape to youngsters’
costumes and bags to help drivers
see them.
E Examine all treats for choking hazards
and tampering before eating. As an
alternative to candy, offer trick-or-
treaters healthy snacks like packs of
raisins, trail mix or pretzels. For party
guests, offer lots of fruits, vegetables and
cheeses instead of platters of sweets.
H Have kids use a flashlight while
trick-or-treating so they can see
(and drivers can see them).
A Always test costume make-up on
a small area first. Be sure to remove
it before bedtime to avoid skin and
eye irritation.
L “Look both ways before crossing”
should be emphasized to children before
they go out. And, encourage them to
use crosswalks wherever possible.
L Lower the risk for serious eye injury
by avoiding any use of decorative
contact lenses: This applies to
Halloween revelers of all ages.
O Only walk on sidewalks or on the
far edge of roads, facing traffic.
W Wear well-fitting masks, costumes
and shoes to prevent blocked vision,
stumbling and falls.
E Enjoy sweet treats in limited
amounts. If you or little ones do eat
processed treats, reach only for those
that are factory-wrapped. Unless
you know the baker well, avoid
homemade treats.
E Enter a house only when with a trusted
adult. Otherwise, stay outside.
N Never walk near lit candles, luminaries
(candles in bags or containers) or jack
o’ lanterns. Be sure that costumes are
flame-resistant.
With these tips in mind,
every member of the family
can reap a full measure of
fun from the season.

all is a good time to travel. Once school
is back in session, popular destinations
are often less crowded and less expensive.
However, a long flight, time changes, irregular
eating or a break in your routine can all affect
your travel enjoyment. Here are a few easy-to-
implement ideas that can help you stay well
and fit when you travel.
Plan ahead
You’re much more likely to stay in shape on
the road if you’ve already mapped a running
route, printed a list of healthy, local restaurants
or booked a hotel with a great gym. There are
numerous websites available to help you learn
the travel-fitness secrets of most major cities.
Sightsee with sneakers
Skip the escalators, elevators, moving side-
walks or the trams. There’s nothing like a
brisk walk to rack up some real mileage. Chart
your progress with a travel-friendly pedometer.
Researchers have found that counting your
steps will encourage you to walk more. Many
fitness-conscious hotels offer runners’ maps that
feature three- and five-mile running routes and a
guide to local retailers for runners. Some hotels
actually have running concierges that lead daily
runs or walks through the city’s sights.
Exercise on the plane or in the car
It’s important to keep moving during long
flights or car trips to avoid deep-vein thrombosis
(DVT). That’s what happens when blood clots
form in your veins, usually in your legs, and
block blood flow. You can do the following while
seated: shoulder rotation, neck roll, finger/toe
stretch, ankle rotation, foot flex and heal lift.
If you’re driving, take frequent stops to stretch
your legs and walk around.
Relax and breathe deeply
Travel can be stressful and that is definitely
not good for you. When you feel stressed out,
close your eyes and take five deep, belly-filling
breaths in and out through your nose.
Hydrate
It’s easy to forget simple things like drinking
water when you travel. If you are flying, avoid
alcohol and high-sugar drinks. Choose water
instead. Also, pack an empty, reusable water
bottle and an easy-to-use travel water filter.
Find the nearest health club
Many hotels offer fitness centers. But if one
isn’t available, check the phone book. Many
full-service health clubs offer day passes within
walking distance. Your local health club may
also have a reciprocity arrangement with
health clubs in other cities.
Eat light – and right
Make sure you have the right nutritional fuel
before heading to the airport. Avoid high-calorie
snacks at the terminal and make sure to pick
healthy onboard selections. You may also want
to pack healthy favorites like granola or nuts in
your carry-on bag.
Update your vaccinations
If you’re traveling overseas, you may need to
get certain shots before departing – sometimes
up to six weeks in advance. Visit the Federal
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) website, cdc.gov/travel – and click on
your destination for required and recommended
vaccines. The same website includes country-
by-country information on food and water-
borne illnesses, and how to avoid them.
Protect yourself from infection
Wash your hands or use an alcohol-based “hand
sanitizer,” especially after spending time on a
crowded plane, train or bus and before eating.
Remember, what you eat, what you pack and
how you act make all the difference. With a little
preparation you can have a very memorable,
healthy trip.

A
little channel surfing
became a large, life-
changing experience
for Cody and Marty. Eight years
ago, Marty tuned to a TriVita®
infomercial for TriVita Sublingual
B-12, featuring Dr. Alfred Libby.
“I was a critical care nurse at the
time and was impressed by TriVita’s
unique delivery systems and how they
increase nutrient absorption,” Marty
recalls. “We ordered Sublingual B-12
and saw a definite improvement in
our health, especially from seasonal
allergies. Now, we’re taking Super
Sublingual B-12 and enjoying even
better results.”
Many other TriVita products fit in perfectly
with the “on the go” lifestyle of this Prescott
Valley, Arizona couple. Cody owns several
businesses, including an aircraft dealership.
“Between the everyday stress that comes
from running a business and the toxins in
the environment, both Marty and I feel
it’s important to take care of ourselves and
supplement on a daily basis,” he says. “We
don’t rely on guesswork, and we know we’re
getting top quality products with TriVita.”
Their lengthy
list of favorites
Cody admits to being
not much of a vegetable
or fruit eater, so
NutraFruits™ is a perfect
match for him. “This
delicious drink mix has
all the vital nutrients
that I would normally
get from fresh fruits
and vegetables,” Cody
remarks. “When I take it,
I know I’m getting some
of the most antioxidant-
rich foods available.”
Another “must” on their list is heart-
healthy OmegaPrime®. Cody’s family has
a history of high cholesterol, and studies
show Omega-3 helps people at risk for
coronary heart disease. Cody and Marty
also agree that nearly everyone requires a
multi-vitamin. And because men and women
have different needs, they take scientifically-
formulated and physician-approved Daily
Men™ and Daily Women™, respectively. Since
loss of vision often comes with age, that’s why
they’ve proactively added VisionGuard™
to
their nutritional regimen.
Recently Marty enjoyed some very good news
when she passed her bone density test with
flying colors. She credits VitaCal-Mag D™
with its 17 proven, bone-nourishing nutrients
for helping keep her bones healthy. Both
Marty and Cody have dramatically reduced
the number of colds they get because of Dr.
Libby’s Vital C Crystals. Marty often enjoys
a tasty Leanology® shake before her workout.
It gives her plenty of energy and helps avoid
an overfull feeling. She describes the new
Leanology shake formula as “great.”
Cody is equally enthusiastic about
OptimaFlex®. “It’s one of my favorites –
I just love it,” he states. “OptimaFlex
improves my flexibility and gives me more
freedom of motion, which allows me to
play an even better game of golf.”
Nopalea™
– their
natural solution
to inflammation
Cody and Marty can
barely contain their
enthusiasm for TriVita’s
new wellness drink,
Nopalea. “Nopalea
isn’t just another
fad product,” Cody
observes, “it’s the
real deal and we are
one hundred percent
sold on it. This product
appeals to people of all ages
and if you are alive, you are

nd even their dog
going to see significant health benefits
from Nopalea.” They both take it daily
and know that it’s helping them neutralize
dangerous toxins and lower inflammation,
which can lead to a host of serious condi-
tions. Marty says, “I’ve seen firsthand how
debilitating chronic pain can be, and we
are doing everything we can do today to
avoid major health problems tomorrow.”
Cody and Marty get a special pleasure from
recommending Nopalea™ to friends and
family. For example, they know a young lady
who suffers from serious psoriasis. Nothing
seemed to work, but after she tried Nopalea,
her psoriasis dramatically improved. Their
next-door-neighbor has arthritis, and after
taking Nopalea every day for a short period
he was able to flex his knuckles, something
he couldn’t do for a long time.
Cody’s brother recently had a double hip
replacement. Soon after his brother was
discharged from the hospital, Cody sent a case
of Nopalea, but didn’t make any promises.
Cody simply said, “Here’s something that
might help you.” After one week, he received
a call from the thrilled brother who reported
that he didn’t have nearly as much pain in
his hip and could now walk normally. As an
experiment, his brother temporarily stopped
taking Nopalea, but when the pain returned,
it confirmed the value of Nopalea and he
started taking it again.
Nopalea is even helping
the family pet
There’s another unexpected fan of Nopalea –
Cassie, their 9-year-old Rottweiler. Cassie
developed arthritis in her hips, which
prevented her from standing up fully or
walking without pain. Their veterinarian
wanted to start giving the dog shots, but Cody
and Marty decided to try a more natural route.
At first they weren’t even sure if Cassie would
drink the Nopalea, but she happily lapped it
up. By the end of the first week Cassie’s mood
improved, she was no longer hunched over
and walked much easier. Soon after, they were
pleasantly surprised when Cassie jumped right
into their SUV without using the ramp which
they normally set up for her. After two months
on Nopalea, Cassie is doing even better and
they have added OptimaFlex to the dog’s daily
bowl of Nopalea. Their joy at seeing the dog’s
improved health is immense and they are
equally pleased that they didn’t have to
give Cassie expensive shots.
So, it all comes down to results. Cody
and Marty have seen what TriVita products
have done for their friends, family and
beloved Cassie. “We have complete trust
in TriVita supplements,” Cody says, “and
we’re doing everything we can to make sure
more people – and pets – experience these
products firsthand.”
TriVita suggests that you check with your pet’s
veterinarian for dosage or use. This product is
developed for human consumption.

was out to lunch
with a girlfriend
the other day and
she was expressing her
frustration at having
two weeks out of the
month ruled by her
mood swings.
“One week I am emotional and crying, and
the next I am mean and mad at everything
and everybody,” she explained. She went on
to say, “I feel so bad for my husband, but I just
wish he could understand what I go through.”
Recognizing the symptoms
After hearing this same comment made by other
friends over the years, I thought it would be
beneficial for my male readers to go over some of
the common symptoms that happen during the
two primary hormonal cycles of a woman’s life.
Premenstrual symptoms (PMS) are defined as
physical or emotional symptoms that precede
menstruation and that are severe enough to
interfere with work or activities. There are at
least 11 premenstrual symptoms that occur
during the two weeks prior to the menstrual
cycle. Some of those are:
• Feeling tired
• Trouble sleeping
• Upset stomach and bloating
• Headache or backache
• Tension
• Irritability
• Mood swings and crying spells
As a woman ages, she will go through various
phases leading up to menopause, which has its
own list of over 35 symptoms. Menopause is the
cessation of monthly periods. Men, if you thought
PMS was bad, it would be in your best interest to
take a crash course on women’s health concerns
during menopause. Just for starters, here is a list
of the most common symptoms:
• Memory lapses
• Irregular heartbeat
• Irritability
• Mood swings
• Hot flashes
• Night sweats
• Insomnia
• Irregular menstrual periods
• Loss of libido (sexual desire)
• Vaginal dryness
• Sudden fatigue
• Anxiety
New research shows that women in early
menopause report that lack of sleep is their
biggest problem. In a study conducted by Judith
A. Berg, Ph.D., involving 110 women between
the ages 43 and 55, the survey showed that
94.5% had difficulty sleeping.
Understanding is power
I’m sure you’ve heard the statement,
“Knowledge is power,” but in the case of
PMS and menopause, “Understanding is
power.” When a man takes the time to
understand how a woman feels, he has the
power to help himself and his wife cope with
the myriad changes taking place in her body.
In fact, one of the best things you can do for
your wife is to put your arm around her and say,
“I understand.” Women just want to know
they’re being heard. Don’t try to “fix” her
problem, just listen to how she feels. With
women it is “feeling, feeling and more feeling.”
When couples choose to learn as much as
they can, they can consider the choices for
lifestyle changes. Discover allopathic and
natural remedies for the symptoms such as
TriVita’s Balanced Woman®, which is good
for both PMS and menopause symptoms.
It can also be a time to celebrate as you take
a look at some of the more positive and more
important changes that happen to women: a
greater sense of freedom, more creativity, a sense
of peace that has not previously been present
and wisdom that only comes to those with
the experience of time.

know it all. Run to God!
Run from evil! Your
body will glow with
health, your very bones
will vibrate with life!”
– Proverbs 3: 7-8
Since women’s health is the theme of this
month’s VitaJournal, I’m pleased to welcome back
Pastor Judith Crist to my column. Her Mother’s
Day thoughts on women and virtue in these
pages a few months ago were well-received, and
she returns to give us a woman’s perspective on
women and spiritual health.
Judith Crist has served alongside
her husband, Dr. Terry Crist,
as one of the Executive Pastors
of City of Grace Church in
Arizona since it was founded.
Her passion is to see people
discover and live the abundant
life found in Jesus Christ. Judith
majored in music, ministry
and Biblical studies at Jackson
College of Ministries in Jackson, MS.
Chaplain Gene: Why is spiritual health
important to physical health? Does this have
special meaning for women?
Pastor Judith: Spiritual health provides
mental stability and emotional freedom. Because
women tend to perceive relational undercur-
rents, they may carry emotions and thoughts
that are toxic. This can lead to stress and
anxiety and physical deterioration. I recommend
spiritual “detox” and cleansing through prayer,
as well as what I call “everyday therapy.” Finding
wise and trustworthy people to process your
thoughts and emotions with, will give you
perspective and aid for your spiritual health.
Without others’ perspective, it’s like walking
through a dark room and tripping over unseen
objects. Prayer and the counsel of others turns
the lights on so we can process our inner
thoughts and emotions. When we trust God’s
wisdom, we can enjoy core health physically,
emotionally and spiritually.
Chaplain Gene: Do you think a person can be
physically healthy without the spiritual element?
Pastor Judith: Ultimately, no. Of course,
you can focus on diet, exercise and mental
attitude and achieve a level of physical health,
BUT – the reason for good physical health is to
fulfill our purpose. If you have health without
spirituality, it is for nothing.
An important area about women and spiritual
health is the idea of influence. Often, if women
think their choices about health, spirituality,
mental and emotional freedom affect only
themselves, they may not be motivated to
improve. But when we realize that our choices
affect others, we are motivated to be healthier
in all those areas.
Chaplain Gene: We know how to work on
our physical selves to be in better shape. Is there
a way to increase spiritual “fitness” too?
Pastor Judith: Yes, by aligning ourselves
with the truth of what God says about Himself,
about us and our time here on the Earth. I urge
the women I counsel to study the character of
God, to read and understand His faithfulness,
His promises and His strength toward us. This
helps us to unclog the pipeline to our source
of supply: Him.
Say to the Lord each day, “Lord, I know I have
a limited perspective so I am going to express
what I’m thinking and feeling and ask You to
purify that and to clarify that through Your
Word.” This lets us adjust our thoughts and
feelings and come away with a better perspective.
Chaplain Gene: It sounds like you’re saying
that spiritual, emotional and physical health are
all intertwined. True?
Pastor Judith: Absolutely. When we talk
with God daily, when we express ourselves
through prayer and align ourselves with God’s
perspective in our lives, it lets us “re-calibrate”
in a spiritual sense. Our emotions and our
health will be better, because we make better
choices when we think better about ourselves.
Women matter. Our health matters. We have
an opportunity to influence others by choosing
to live in confidence in our relationship with
God. And by “Living with the lights on,” we
can show the way to others as well.
Editor’s Note: In next month’s VitaJournal
Chaplain Gene will explore with Pastor Judith
how spiritual life can be different for men
and women.

20. This feature launches a new VitaJournal series
about toxins around us: in our food, air and water
and in our daily environments.
Doesn’t the living room look great with a fresh
coat of paint? Too bad it’s emitting VOCs
(volatile organic chemicals), which have been
linked to cancer. The new mini-blinds are
perfect; what do you mean, they’re sending
phthalates into the air, and now I’m breathing
in hormone-disruptors? Think I’ll head for the
office; I know it’s professionally cleaned every
day. With what? Products that contain acetone,
which can cause seizures and kidney damage?
Once you start tuning in to the dangerous
substances in our daily environments, it can
seem there’s nowhere “safe” to turn. But, since
knowledge is power, you can take action by
knowing about the toxins in our world.
What’s waiting for you in “Tox Town?”
Sadly, environmental toxins are such an estab-
lished fact that the U.S. Government offers an
introduction to “toxic chemicals and environmen-
tal health risks you might encounter in everyday
life, in everyday places.” It’s called “Tox Town,”
(toxtown.nlm.nih.gov), a service of the National
Library of Medicine to help you identify and learn
about the poisons that inhabit our lives.
From home to office to farm, from schools to
parks to factories, the site details the substances
in our environments that are known (or
suspected) to be harmful.
Home, toxic home?
Even the cleanest home can harbor potential
health dangers because of building materials used
in its construction, or from ordinary products
used and stored at home. There are toxic
materials, such as asbestos and lead, poisonous
gases like carbon monoxide, and allergy/asthma
triggers in the air, such as mold and dust. Here’s a
summary of just some of these hazards:
Asbestos: Cancer-causing insulation and
fireproofing material that was banned in the
U.S. in 1986. It’s found in older homes, in
roofing shingles, plumbing insulation and
ceiling and floor tiles.
Lead: Leaded paint chips or dust cause
childhood lead poisoning (kidney damage,
convulsions, even death). In utensils or dishes
that contain lead, common in some merchandise
from overseas, repeated exposure for anyone can
damage the brain, kidneys and muscles.
Carbon monoxide: Highly poisonous, this
gas lacks color, odor and taste. Exposure comes
from motor vehicle exhausts, gasoline-powered
tools and tobacco smoke. Results: dizziness,
unconsciousness, coma and death.
Radon: Radioactive gas formed naturally, it
enters buildings through rocks and soil and may
cause lung cancer.
Office hazards
Like our homes, offices are familiar places that
we may assume are safe, but which can pose
health dangers. Poor indoor air and potentially
harmful chemicals are among the hazards that
have been documented. Some examples:
Indoor air: You may be breathing in fumes
or tiny particles from cleaning supplies,
construction products, building materials and
copying and printing machines. Potential results:
allergies, asthma and breathing problems.
Chemicals: Some pesticides are known to
cause cancer, disrupt hormones or irritate skin
and eyes. Skin problems or allergies can result
from handling office supplies and products, as
well as from office cleaning products.
Of course, we can’t avoid contact with
all toxins. We can, though, help our
bodies deal with the stress of polluted
environments with Adaptogen 10
Plus®. Its natural ingredients help
relieve stress-related damage to
our body’s cells and systems. Ask a

“Think of yourself as impor-
tant. God made you in His
own image and you should
reflect that in your thinking.
When you can do that, you
will not settle for being second
best. You will look your best, do your best and
you will pick the best friends to be with. You
will not be swayed by what others think or do.
Look after yourself. When life gets crazy, we
tend to forget ourselves and what we need in the
day, looking only after the needs of others. We
also need some time for ourselves, rejuvenating
our minds and bodies. Take time to read, to soak
in a tub, to go out with friends and laugh a lot.
We need to start early to eat the right way. I
strongly recommend that you eat lots of fruits
and vegetables, drink lots of water and forget
the carbonated drinks.
You also need to take time out to commune with
your Heavenly Father because after all He is the
one who loves you and wants the best for you.”

“I would urge all my younger
women friends to fully follow
TriVita’s 10 Essentials for
Health and Wellness. These
are the great foundations for
principled living. They have
helped me establish my ‘habits for health.’
I was challenged by my own mother to read at
least one verse daily from the Bible and be in a
place of committed faith. I have had plenty of
support to develop acceptance and became a
forgiving, loving, grateful woman. I surrounded
myself with inspiring, positive people. I tried to
express my grateful spirit for everything they did.
Remembering a friend’s birthday and sending
caring notes is a priority. So is tipping the
attendant in an airport restroom and smiling at
everyone. I am developing an ‘after you’ spirit.
Letting folks in the grocery line go ahead of me
or letting a car merge ahead of me feels good.
This for me all combines into a fresh, fulfilling,
healthy life. Every day is a choice.”
Kelly Hickman,
TriVita employee
“There’s nothing more
important than our health –
our physical, spiritual and
emotional health. For physical
health, I would encourage
all women to maintain a
good supplement program of daily vitamins
and minerals such as VitaDaily AM/PM multi-
vitamin for general wellness support, Vital C
for preventative health, Adaptogen 10 Plus for
reducing stress and Nopalea for eliminating
toxins and reducing inflammation.
Emotional and spiritual health are equally
important. For spiritual health, I encourage
everyone to have at least one devotional
session daily to maintain and strengthen their
relationship with God. For emotional health, I
believe a positive attitude is essential. The minute
we get out of bed, we choose the kind of day we
are going to have. We all have issues to face, and
although we can’t pick the ones to come our way,
we can choose the attitudes we’re going to have
when facing them.
By helping to take care of all aspects of our health
we’ll be on the right path for greater wellness so
we can live our lives to the fullest.”

22. Pigments in fruits and vegetables may protect against bone loss, study suggests
Boston, Massachusetts
Carotenoids (antioxidant pigments found in fruits and vegetables) appear to have a protective effect against
bone loss, it was reported recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Researchers from Tufts University, Hebrew SeniorLife and Boston University studied data on 334 men and
540 women in the Framingham Osteoporosis Study. Using data from food questionnaires, they evaluated
the intake of carotenoids (including alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein
plus zeaxanthin) in association with bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip, spine and radial shaft (bone
in the forearm).
Carotenoids (lycopene in particular, which is found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon) appeared to have
a protective effect against loss of BMD in the lumbar spine for women and in the hip for men. Researchers
concluded: “Although not consistent across all BMD sites examined, these results support a protective role of
carotenoids for BMD in older men and women.”

Researchers examined data from nine earlier studies that recorded the consumption of green or black tea and
stroke incidence in 194,965 people. It was discovered that regardless of country of origin, those who drank three
or more cups of black or green tea had a 21% lower risk of stroke than those who drank less than one cup per day.
The results were presented earlier this year at the American Heart Association’s annual International Stroke
Conference in San Diego, California and published in the May 2009 Stroke: The Journal of the American
Heart Association.
The Unilever Lipton Institute of Tea funded the study.
A diet rich in fish and olive oil may preserve bone mass
Athens, Greece
A study from the Harokopio University in Athens suggests that a diet with some of the features of the
so-called Mediterranean diet may help women maintain their bone mass throughout adulthood.
Researchers measured the lumbar spine bone mineral density and total body mineral content in 220 adult
Greek women. Their diet was evaluated through food records and a Mediterranean diet score.
While a Mediterranean diet was not found to affect bone mass indicators, certain elements of the diet were
found to be positively associated with lumbar spine bone mineral density and total body mineral content.
Researchers concluded that “...adherence to a dietary pattern close to the Mediterranean diet, i.e., high
consumption of fish and olive oil and low red meat intake, was positively related to bone mass, suggesting
potential bone-preserving properties of this pattern throughout adult life.”

People with high “dispositional activity” or engagement in life (extraverts), have lower
levels of the stress-related inflammatory chemical, interleukin 6 (IL-6), according to
research published in the July 2009 issue of Brain, Behavior and Immunity.
“Our study took the important first step of finding an association between one
part of extraversion and a specific stress-related, inflammatory chemical,” said
Benjamin Chapman, Ph.D., assistant professor within the Rochester Center for
Mind-Body Research (RCMBR) at the University of Rochester Medical Center,
and lead author of the study. The next step, say researchers, is to determine if one
causes the other. If low engagement in life is causing inflammation, treatment
plans could focus on helping high-risk patients become more engaged in life.
For both white and minority women, the difference between high and low
engagement in life was enough to send IL-6 levels over a threshold previously
linked to a doubling of risk of death within five years. Other aspects of
extraversion, such as sociability and positive emotions, appeared to have no
affect on IL-6 levels.

density test, I had actually gained bone in my hips. Taking
Bone Builder requires a commitment as you must take three
doses daily. I have learned some little tricks to help me stay
compliant with the dosage recommendations, such as assembling
my supplements in pretty little containers on the counter to
remind me, and I even have a pretty pill box in my purse.
Nopalea has become my miracle cocktail that I take daily.
I had severe inflammatory arthritis and lived with chronic
and excruciating pain in my feet. I started taking Nopalea,
not knowing if it would even help, but within six weeks, the
inflammation was gone and I was pain free and even back to
exercising and enjoying life’s activities. One more exciting thing
happened as a result of Nopalea: my CRP (C-reactive protein)
number dropped below one. My physician was very excited to
see that, as CRP is a heart inflammatory marker. I have learned
that supplementing is like eating – you wouldn’t let a day go by
without it. I wasn’t born with good genes, but TriVita supplements
have made an incredible difference in giving me better health.”
Thank you, Susan. Here are some additional empowering
tips you might find valuable in creating a sustainable
wellness program:
1. Do what is right, not what is easy. There is no
magic bullet.
2. The respect and commitment you have for your
wellness program says a lot about the respect you
have for yourself.
3. Never trust anyone to care about your health more than
you do. You are the ultimate caregiver in your life.
4. Your self-care will build your self-worth.
While these are bold statements, they are powerful in helping
you focus your nurturing characteristics on yourself and create
greater wellness in your life.
May you be inspired to pursue wellness with passion
and purpose.

“Sublingual B-12 has given me lots
more get up and go.”
“I’ve been taking the Sublingual
B-12 for about a year. Before I
started it I felt terrible and didn’t
have any pep. Now I can go out
and walk without trouble. I use my
treadmill all the time... Sublingual
B-12 has given me lots more get
up and go. I was taking Zoloft pills, now I don’t take
them*. I also used to take a nap every day and I
don’t have to do that anymore.
I even gave the B-12 to a friend. Since he started
taking the B-12, he has a lot more energy.”

“...my bone density actually improved
4%! I was thrilled!”
“I’m 65 years old. Several years ago I had a
bone scan and was diagnosed with osteopenia.
My doctor put me on a prescription medicine.
I tried it for awhile but stopped taking it.*
My doctor suggested I take 1,500 mg of calcium
a day instead. I was very interested in Bone
Builder when it became available and started
taking it. Just a couple of weeks ago I had
another bone scan. The technician said that
they sometimes see improvement of 1% or so,
but my bone density actually improved 4%! I
was thrilled! I really believe that improvement
is attributed to Bone Builder because I’ve taken
the extra calcium for awhile but only recently
saw these improvements. The technician asked
for information about Bone Builder because they
said it normally takes 1 to 1 1/2 years for bones to
rebuild, and see that 1% improvement, so I was
just thrilled with the results. It says a lot for your
product!”

“Super Sublingual B-12 has allowed
us to help our daughter overcome the
daily ADHD challenges...”
“Our daughter was diagnosed
with ADHD (attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder) when she
was in 5th grade. Since that time
she has been on medicine to help
her succeed in her studies and
have healthy friendships. Since
putting her on Super Sublingual B-12 daily,
she is no longer in need of her meds and we have
completely eliminated them.* Our daughter is 17
years old now and carries a 3.9 grade point average,
takes Honors classes, works a job and says she has
never felt better! She no longer has the fatigue
that was related to her medicines, and neither is
she biting her nails or having trouble sleeping at
night. Super Sublingual B-12 has allowed us to help
our daughter overcome the daily challenges of her
ADHD naturally, eliminating the risk of side effects
of the medicine she was formerly on.”

“I don’t have PMS symptoms like before.”
“My thyroid went haywire after I had a miscarriage 15
years ago, and I more than doubled my weight. After
having three children right in a row, I started getting my
period only once per year, sometimes every other year.
I went to several naturopaths and was told I was maybe
entering menopause at the age of 35. I started walking
two hours every day and weight training every other
day just to try to keep the weight from ballooning, but I
couldn’t lose a single pound.
Finally, one naturopath told me I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. By this time,
not only was I extremely overweight, but I also had chronic PMS symptoms
such as sore breasts, bloating and irritability. I started taking TriVita’s
Balanced Woman and GlucoManage together, got my period three times in
a row, and lost 25 pounds which I’ve kept off for the past two years. I’ve since
lost another 10 pounds and have had my period four times so far just this year.
I don’t have PMS symptoms like before. I feel like I finally have some hope.“

“My pain is minimal and my energy level is
greatly increased.”
“I am surprised and also very excited about this product because it works.
As a 70-year-old retired Registered Nurse, I had to retire years early due
to fibromyalgia. I had suffered terribly with pain and fatigue to the point it
had taken over my life. I tried many prescriptions with little help until I tried
a prescription medication that helped the pain but had the bad side effect
of weight gain.
I was reluctant to try Nopalea as I believed more in the medical model
approach. My daughter-in-law convinced me to give it a try and I am so very
thankful she did. I cannot express the difference Nopalea has made in my
life. My pain is minimal and my energy level is greatly increased. I am also
sleeping through the night and able to do the things I love. I truly feel that I
have my life back. The taste is very good and more importantly, the results
are excellent. I have encouraged friends and family to give Nopalea a try. I
know they won’t be disappointed!”

A
ll it took was a chance
encounter with TriVita®
CEO Michael Ellison and his
wife, Susan, to dramatically change
one person’s life. Melody (Melo)
was working as a server at a hotel
restaurant on the big island of Hawaii
when she struck up a conversation
with the Ellisons. They were won over
by Melo’s bubbly, upbeat personality.
As someone who was very interested
in health and wellness, she was very
intrigued by TriVita’s products and
vowed to find out more.
Melo started researching the company and
discovered that her sister had been taking
(and raving about) TriVita products all along.
Now she was really inspired to give these
products a try.
A super lift from Super B
Melo started with TriVita’s hugely popular
product, Super Sublingual B-12. “I love it,”
Melo exclaims. “It gives me a nice lift and more
strength, energy and clarity than ever before.
Super B allows me to multi-task and easily get
through 40-hour work weeks without missing
a beat.” She also takes Balanced Woman®,
which gives her fast relief from many symptoms
of menopause. “Before I was getting such bad
hot flashes that I would step into the walk-in
refrigerator room at work and try to cool off,” she
recalls. “Now I finally feel like I have some help.”
Fantastic Nopalea™ results
Melo is positively ecstatic about Nopalea. “It
has given me unbelievable energy,” she relates,
“and I feel great after taking it.” She notices that
Nopalea has definitely decreased the amount
and severity of her family’s colds and
other viruses. It has also helped ease
her husband’s sciatica symptoms.
Melo is also thrilled that her friends
are enjoying tremendous results from
Nopalea. For example, one friend has
type 2 diabetes, which caused his leg
to turn black. Since he started with
Nopalea his leg has cleared up and he’s
so sold on the product that he’s ordered two
cases. Another friend had been living with
constant back pain for many years. After three
days on Nopalea she said to Melo, “I don’t have
pain anymore. What’s in this stuff?”
“Now that I’ve seen how Nopalea has benefited
both my friends and family, I am very passionate
about this product,” Melo reports, “and I strongly
believe that Nopalea is the perfect product for
our times.”
Even more important, she considers TriVita a
staunch partner in her effort to ensure good
health for her entire family. She has reason to
be concerned. “Four members of my immediate
family have died in recent years from various
diseases,” she says. “I also have a brother in
his fifties who suffers from several serious
health conditions and carries an oxygen tank
wherever he goes. I want to break this cycle of
illness that’s plaguing our family... and I don’t
want to be a statistic. I plan on staying alive to
help my children and grandchildren find their
purpose in life.”
Hawaii’s healthcare problems
Although Hawaii is considered a picture-
perfect, tropical paradise by many statesiders,
as a native Hawaiian, Melo is painfully
aware of the 50th state’s less glamorous side.
Hawaii tops the charts for many diseases,
especially type 2 diabetes. One of the reasons
unemployment is on the rise is because many
people have cut back on family vacations to
the Islands. This causes inevitable stress and
breakdown of health for families who depend
on the tourist trade. Many of these same
people could benefit from TriVita products –
and that’s why she has decided to become
a TriVita Affiliate Member. “My passion is
to help Hawaiians stay healthier and live
longer,” she remarks. “Now I finally have all
the tools available to make that happen.”
People immediately respond to Melo’s
dynamic personality and she is spreading
the word about Nopalea and other TriVita
products at stores, doctor’s offices and any
other welcoming location. “Just give me a
place to set up shop and I can assure you
that I’ll get people interested in Nopalea,”
Melo enthuses. “People just love the fruity,
delicious flavor. Then, I just need to wait a
few days after they’ve started their first bottle
to hear inspirational stories from many people
who have gotten incredible health results
from Nopalea.”
So, if a vivacious Hawaiian woman with a
warm smile offers you a Nopalea sample, make
sure to say “Aloha” because it could very well
be Melo.

26. SUCCESS STORIES
“After several months I started to notice a
positive difference.”
“I have been taking Balanced Woman now for
about two years. I was feeling overwhelmed
about everyday duties and had heart palpitations,
night sweats, anxiety attacks, hopelessness and
a very negative attitude. After several months
of taking Balanced Woman I noticed a positive
difference. Then I stopped taking it because I
thought I was getting better on my own. Once
the same negative symptoms came back I started
using Balanced Woman again and will definitely
continue with it. I highly recommend this product.”

O
ur bodies have small but powerful
chemical “messengers” that control
several vital aspects of life, from growth
to reproduction to mood. These messengers are
hormones, and just a tiny change one way or
another can affect the entire body.
So a change in hormones can be a major health
issue. For women, major shifts in hormone
balance are very visible: menstruation begins in
adolescence and ends at menopause. Not so visible
are changes in sex drive that often occur around
the time of menopause, and can cause concern.
Six out of ten women
experiencing discomfort
As menopause approaches or passes, there are
drops in the hormone estrogen that often result
in discomfort or even pain during intimacy.
When more than 1,000 women aged 35 and
up were surveyed, almost six out of ten said
they were having symptoms of dryness, pain
and discomfort during sexual relations, as they
approached or passed menopause.
Another survey indicated that up to 45% of
post-menopausal women find sex painful. No
wonder, then, that when menopausal symptoms
like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and
weight gain are added to the mix, women (and
their partners) can sometimes feel bewildered.
At the same time that the drop in estrogen can
trigger these unwanted symptoms, the urge for
intimacy can dwindle.
While prescription hormone therapy may bring
relief, concerns about side effects cause many
women to seek alternatives. Supplements that
support hormonal balance could be a solution
(see box at left).
Are you too stressed for sex?
In looking for solutions to the issues around
hormonal change, it’s important not to overlook
a very important factor: stress. Your adrenal
glands (involved in making estrogen) can get
worn out, or “fatigued,” by too much chronic
pressure. When the adrenals use their resources
to just cope with everyday life, they don’t have
much left to fuel desire and interest in sex.
Because stress contributes to so many health
problems for both men and women, it’s
important to find ways to manage it. Deep-
breathing exercises, quiet time, listening to
music... whatever helps you get off the merry-
go-round of “musts” may also help you re-kindle
your love life. (For more on stress relief, ask a
Wellness Consultant about Adaptogen 10 Plus®
at 1-800-991-7116.)
Poor nutrition also contributes to low sex drive.
So women who are juggling too many family and
work responsibilities, dealing with menopausal
symptoms and not eating right are prime targets
for problems. (For more on both adrenal fatigue
and how to help prevent it with food and
lifestyle choices, see page 28.)
While hormone changes can be baffling and
troublesome, they can also be opportunities
to find new perspectives on sexuality, and new
levels of health and wellness.
Experts agree that quality supplements can
help many women with hormonal balance.
TriVita offers two in particular that might make a
difference: OmegaPrime® and Balanced Woman®.
With its abundance of Essential Fatty Acids
(EFAs), OmegaPrime is formulated to support
the body’s production of healthy hormones. Not
only are EFAs a key building block for hormone
production, but also, the body cannot produce
EFAs on its own. So it’s especially important to
supply the daily need for EFAs through food
and supplements.
Balanced Woman is clinically proven to balance
hormones naturally, helping give relief from hot
flashes, night sweats and irritability. For women
who have symptoms just before their periods,
or those around menopause, Balanced Woman
helps to harmonize existing hormones that can
cause hormonal imbalances.
