Automated software testing is a key enabler for teams wanting to build high quality software that can be progressively enhanced and continuously released. To ensure development practices are sustainable, automated testing must be treated as a first-class citizen and not all approaches are created equal. Some approaches can accumulate technical debt, cause duplication of effort and even team dysfunctions.
The seven deadly sins of automated software testing are a set of common anti-patterns that have been found to erode the value of automated testing resulting in long term maintenance issues and ultimately affecting the ability of development teams to respond to change and continuously deliver.
Taking the classic seven sins (Gluttony, Sloth, Lust, Envy, Rage, Pride, Greed) as they might be applied to test automation we will discuss how to identify each automated sin and more importantly provide guidance on recommended solutions and how to avoid them in the first place.

Ideas can come from many different places, but how do we best turn these ideas into initiatives and ensure we are working on the right things at the right time? We tend to throw the idea around, discuss it with our team and management, and undertake a lot of analysis to decide if it’s worth spending time and money on. Unfortunately this approach means we have already spent a bunch of time and money, often without realising it!
A number of the early Agile approaches described a lifecycle for kicking off projects, but many of the newer and more popular approaches start with a backlog or an assumption that you are already building something. Go back to basics and look at different approaches for kicking off initiatives and the tools and techniques that make up what is often called the discovery, ideation or concept phase. Have you ever heard of Clients from Hell – the website that cites hellish stories designers collect over a lifetime of working with clients? If you haven’t, many of the situations described on the site won’t be foreign to you: clients who believe theirs is the only opinion that matters, who tell you which colors to use and ask to “make the logo bigger,” and who just don’t seem to get their head around what UX truly means. Clients being difficult is a well-known cliche in the design world.
There’s another side to all this: clients are also people who are deeply embedded within organizations we can help with our proficiency in design-thinking and user-centered design. They know their jobs, customers, and organizations so well that if we could just see eye to eye, we could make real impact together.
In her talk, Jenny will explore some insights from over a decade of working with clients. She will share practical examples of hands-on methods to explain, teach, and inspire user-centered thinking in clients who “just don’t get it.”

Agile Project Experiences - The Story of Three Little PigsCraig Smith

There’s another side to all this: clients are also people who are deeply embedded within organizations we can help with our proficiency in design-thinking and user-centered design. Design and evaluation of an interactive proof-of-concept dashboard for genera...Robin De Croon
Targeted follow-up meetings in general practice are important and missed often, because of both patient and general practitioners (GPs) related reasons. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept interactive visualization dashboard that provides GPs with a powerful, yet easy to use method to identify those patients in need of follow-up. We applied a user centered, rapid prototyping methodology with 12 information visualization students and 15 GPs. We evaluated the final design using the evaluation framework by O’Leary et al., as well as a System Usability Scale questionnaire. Results indicate that there is indeed a need for a follow-up tool and that a dashboard is a right kind of tool. Our proof-of-concept shows useful insights into patient records and can indeed help GPs recognize patients in need of follow-up. The major strengths of the design are the ease with which GPs can query patient records using interactive visualizations, such as parallel coordinates, and the ability to check if the number of patients diagnosed with certain diseases differs from the amount predicted in evidence-based guidelines.

While working with Agile projects, we simply can't get away from tracking and showcasing the progress of the project. A typical Agile project would be working with estimates, story points, velocities, burn-up or burn-down charts.
I have witnessed numerous sprint reviews and showcases where the business is only waiting to see those few slides of the presentation where there is the "actual" red worm, running against the "planned" green worm, trying to catch-up. If the red worm is ahead, I have seen a smile on the faces of the stakeholders. If it matches the green one, there is a sigh of relief. And as a development team you should just pray that the poor red guy is not falling behind the green one, lest it might lead to a lot of questions starting with why, how, what etc.
There have also been times where there have been some unfortunate heated discussions that last forever on why did the team end up not claiming a few points that they had committed. What gets lost is what the team accomplished in the sprint that adds good value to the product. There have also been times where the estimates are being questioned by the product owner or account managers. If you are working in a distributed setup where the product owner is working out of a different country, the problem is even bigger.
Let us think about a scenario where the project gets completed on time, budget and scope. Majority (or all) of estimates were correct. However, when the product went live to the market it failed big time. What is the use of building such a product?
Are we focusing too much on numbers and points and overlooking the other important aspects of Agile software development such as producing software that delights the customers and looking for ways on how we can measure that? Are we measuring if we are creating a solid, robust and a scalable platform that is ready for future developments and enhancements? Are we measuring the outcomes of the time we are spending in the shoes of the people who will actually use the software?
The objective of this presentation is to promote the thinking of measuring what matters for your project. To measure the goals that your software development wants to achieve. I don't plan to showcase an exhaustive list of measurements that can solve all your problems, however, I instead want to highlight some samples that I have used in my projects with the help of my team, that helped us to measure things that add value to the business and development v/S simply creating burn down charts.
Majorly, I want to encourage thinking out of the box to identify what measurements will really matter for your projects. Perhaps from the eyes of the users and business and see what things if measured will add a lot more value than simply estimates, and will help in creating a valuable product that will truly delight the business and the users of the product.

Any good Digital project starts out with a good set of Goals & Objectives...but when was the last time that you measured the result of those goals & objectives?
