#2 Over the past two years, virtualization has become more and more important to our clients. It is becoming a cornerstone, a base requirement for moving to a more effective infrastructure. In many cases, cost is an initial driver for consolidation, and the increasing capabilities in virtualization allow more consolidation than ever before. While cost is a driver, more and more or our clients are viewing virtualization as an enabler. An enabler to move from managing individual resources to managing resource pools as if they were a single server, storage device or application. Analysts are telling our clients to look at virtualization as an enabler and one of the first steps to the new, emerging technology of cloud computing. Virtualization is also one of the key initiatives for a client to embrace on the way to a dynamic infrastructure. IBM has a long history with virtualization. We are the pioneers of virtualization, bringing it to our mainframe customers over 40 years ago, introducing new innovations over the past decades for server, storage and application virtualization. #3 What all of this means is that the digital and physical infrastructures of the world are converging. Computational power is being put into things we wouldn't recognize as computers. Indeed, almost anything—any person, any object, any process or any service, for any organization, large or small—can become digitally aware and networked. --Sam Palmisano With so much technology and networking abundantly available at such low cost: What wouldn't you put smart technology into? What service wouldn't you provide a customer, citizen, student or patient? What wouldn't you connect? What information wouldn't you mine for insight?
#4 All of this pervasive instrumentation enhances our ability to sense and capture what is actually happening in any given system. Where we once inferred, we now know. Where we once interpolated and extrapolated, we can now determine. The historical is giving way to the real-time. We are amassing an unimaginable amount of data in the world. In just three years, IP traffic is expected to total more than half a zettabyte. (That's a trillion gigabytes—or a 1 followed by 21 zeroes.) 30%, the percentage of total data in the world used for medical images. 30%, the percentage of total data in the world used for medical images. And it's not just about volume and velocity. The nature of the data we are collecting and analyzing is changing, too. Consider that 30 percent of the data in the world now consists of medical images. Consider the 10,000 security cameras here in London that are connected to the Web, feeding it video 24 hours a day. Or take the 1,000 connected sensors monitoring a new bridge in Hong Kong—and multiply them by the millions of roads, bridges and buildings in cities around the world. We're capturing data about temperature, soil condition, water flow, vibration and location. And then there's the growing torrent of information from billions of individuals, through so-called social media. They are customers, citizens, students and patients—and they are telling us what they think, what they like and want, what they're witnessing. As I said, all this data is far more real-time than ever before. Most of us today, as leaders and as individuals, make decisions based on information that is backward-looking and limited in scope. That's the best we had, but that is quickly changing.
#8 Virtualization is a logical representation of resources not constrained by physical limitations. Virtualization allows a single physical server to be partitioned into multiple logical servers to support server consolidation—to reduce the number of servers required to support IT services. Through virtualization, your clients can achieve a simpler, more scalable, more cost-efficient IT infrastructure that aligns more flexibly with emerging business goals. Key Thoughts: Consolidate Resources is primarily a CapEx reduction priority as customers increase utilization of existing equipment. There is an OpEx aspect in reducing electricity and cooling costs, but those typically do not appear under the IT organization part of the ledger. Manage Workloads and Automate Workflows are primarily focused on OpEx, especially by reducing the labor required for the management of the IT infrastructure. Optimize Delivery is primarily focused on business agility and tight alignment of IT resources with Business imperatives. As you move thru these different priorities or stages, the emphasis moves from IT efficiency (Consolidate) to business effectiveness (Optimize)

#10 Clients worldwide are leveraging virtualization technology to reduce CAPEX and OPEX and increase agility and improve the quality of their service delivery. As they start their journey towards a more efficient and optimized IT environment, IBM provides well-defined methodology and tooling to do this effectively and efficiently. As customer start consolidating their workload, IBM provides planning and analysis tools and services. STG has tools that allow you to estimate the capacity needed when moving to IBM platforms. GTS, GBS and Tivoli provide tooling that helps in workload migration . When customers do this migration, they save significant Capital Expense but often find that the resulting environment is more complex. Integrated service management from Tivoli tools and Systems Director provide visibility, control and automation for their new environment to reduce cost and realize the gains form virtualization. Using the hypervisor level monitoring and management capabilities from Systems Director VMcontrol and application and workload level discovery and monitoring capabilities from Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager and IBM Tivoli Monitoring integrated into a single solution provides a complete and integrated physical and virtual management of the physical and virtual infrastructure. Customers can now start moving workload into this environment. CPU and memory allocation for the Virtual machines can be dynamically adjusted using Systems Director VMcontrol capabilities and new workloads can be assigned to the correct systems wether they are x86, Power or Z from Tivoli Workload Scheduler and Tivoli Dynamic Workload Broker. Virtualization allows rapid provisioning of systems using virtual images. Tivoli provisioning manager along with Systems Director VMcontrol allow rapid provisioning of services on virtual machines to this environment. As customers start using virtualization, they find that virtual images start getting creates and before they know it they are facing virtual image sprawl. No one seems to know where all the images are who owns them, if they are patched or not, who has changed them. Director VMcontrol provides a mechanism of storing virtual images in a repository and deploying virtual images for hypervisors on IBM platforms and Tivoli Provisioning Manager with its Federated Image Library and the Tivoli Service Automation tooling allows conversion between image formats, management of multiple image repositories in the data center from a single console. Tracking changes and ownership of images across IBM and non IBM platforms provides client change and configuration control to prevent sprawl These constitute Basic and Advanced Image Management capabilities . Virtualization provides unique capabilities that improve the availability of the infrastructure. Customers want to make their infrastructure and applications available. Director VMcontrol provides infrastructure level availability by moving virtual machines due to predictive failure alert form hardware or due to maintenance and Tivoli Systems Automation provides application level availability by automatically restarting application components on other severs when failure is detected at the software level and VMs are still running. Security is an inherent part of the solution that IBM recommends. This includes Identity Management, Access Management, Audit and compliance form the Tivoli portfolio and Isolation management of virtual system that System Director VMcontrol will be providing. As customers become more efficient in monitoring and managing their infrastructure, greater optimization can be achieved by implementing sense and respond automation for mode advanced workload management. Tight integration between Tivoli tooling and Middleware allow greater awareness and automated actions for advanced workload management . Significant operational expense reduction can be achieved by delivering standardized services using a service catalog and self-service so that cost of service delivery for standardized workloads is drastically reduced. All these scenarios are possible due to the deep technical capabilities in hardware management, hypervisor management and service management that include predictive alerts, energy awareness, application level discovery, monitoring, provisioning, configuration management, license management, usage monitoring, and better datacenter analytics.

Before : In the consolidate resources phase, typically 50% of power is lost to cooling, UPS and power conversion. The migration involved literally thousands of assets – a full range of IBM servers and mainframes, including System z, p, I, x and TotalStorage disk and tape units, as well as hardware from other vendors. All of FIAT’s applications were part of the migration, including its extensive SAP application suite – consisting of finance, procurement and resource management and planning, and the industry-specifics SAP automotive solutions, along with HR, warehouse, parts management, global dealer management, marketing and production systems. No part of the organization was left unaffected. These systems serve thousands of users at dozens of facilities across Europe and also tie into FIAT’s global operations. The new infrastructure is far simpler, flexible and capable. In total, some 2250 servers were consolidated onto 1562 servers and FIAT’s 400TB of storage was increased to 450TB. The number of discrete databases was reduced from 1900 down to 500. Over 1000 network lines and VLANs were reissued and some 900 people were physically relocated . #22 Virtualization benefits extend beyond the data center and out to the business. While the IT community is concerned with streamlining the data center by: reducing complexity, reducing server and storage sprawl to see benefits like higher utilization, reduction in floor space requirements, and more efficient power and cooling. The business has other concerns. If the business needs to deploy a new application, it doesn’t want to wait for IT to acquire a new server or storage device. It wants to be able to quickly grow and expand as the market demands. A virtualized, flexible infrastructure that allows for quick provisioning of resources can satisfy that requirement. If the underlying resources can be quickly provisioned and brought online, new services and applications can be made available to the end users much more efficiently.
