Virtualization helps deliver improved agility  – Retail Example Agility The marketing department at a major retailer is rolling out a major marketing campaign culminating in a new television advertisement at the World Cup. This campaign requires a provisioned web commerce site to handle increased customer transaction volume   Reaction Time Start 6 months  prior to launch Start 2 months  prior to launch 2 hours after launch 2 minutes after launch 0 minutes after launch Traffic increase is anticipated and capacity is reserved based on marketing department proactively scheduling necessary IT resources to coincide with product launch and advertisement.   1. Over the past two years, virtualization has become more and more important to our clients. It is becoming a cornerstone, a base requirement for moving to a more effective infrastructure. In many cases, cost is an initial driver for consolidation, and the increasing capabilities in virtualization allow more consolidation than ever before. While cost is a driver, more and more or our clients are viewing virtualization as an enabler. An enabler to move from managing individual resources to managing resource pools as if they were a single server, storage device or application. Analysts are telling our clients to look at virtualization as an enabler and one of the first steps to the new, emerging technology of cloud computing. Virtualization is also one of the key initiatives for a client to embrace on the way to a dynamic infrastructure. IBM has a long history with virtualization. We are the pioneers of virtualization, bringing it to our mainframe customers over 40 years ago, introducing new innovations over the past decades for server, storage and application virtualization.   2. What all of this means is that the digital and physical infrastructures of the world are converging. Computational power is being put into things we wouldn't recognize as computers. Indeed, almost anything—any person, any object, any process or any service, for any organization, large or small—can become digitally aware and networked. --Sam Palmisano With so much technology and networking abundantly available at such low cost: What wouldn't you put smart technology into? What service wouldn't you provide a customer, citizen, student or patient? What wouldn't you connect? What information wouldn't you mine for insight?
  3. All of this pervasive instrumentation enhances our ability to sense and capture what is actually happening in any given system. Where we once inferred, we now know. Where we once interpolated and extrapolated, we can now determine. The historical is giving way to the real-time. We are amassing an unimaginable amount of data in the world. In just three years, IP traffic is expected to total more than half a zettabyte. (That's a trillion gigabytes—or a 1 followed by 21 zeroes.) 30%, the percentage of total data in the world used for medical images. 30%, the percentage of total data in the world used for medical images. And it's not just about volume and velocity. The nature of the data we are collecting and analyzing is changing, too. Consider that 30 percent of the data in the world now consists of medical images. Consider the 10,000 security cameras here in London that are connected to the Web, feeding it video 24 hours a day. Or take the 1,000 connected sensors monitoring a new bridge in Hong Kong—and multiply them by the millions of roads, bridges and buildings in cities around the world. We're capturing data about temperature, soil condition, water flow, vibration and location. And then there's the growing torrent of information from billions of individuals, through so-called social media. They are customers, citizens, students and patients—and they are telling us what they think, what they like and want, what they're witnessing. As I said, all this data is far more real-time than ever before. Most of us today, as leaders and as individuals, make decisions based on information that is backward-looking and limited in scope. That's the best we had, but that is quickly changing.
  4. Virtualization is a logical representation of resources not constrained by physical limitations. Virtualization allows a single physical server to be partitioned into multiple logical servers to support server consolidation—to reduce the number of servers required to support IT services. Through virtualization, your clients can achieve a simpler, more scalable, more cost-efficient IT infrastructure that aligns more flexibly with emerging business goals. Key Thoughts: Consolidate Resources is primarily a CapEx reduction priority as customers increase utilization of existing equipment. There is an OpEx aspect in reducing electricity and cooling costs, but those typically do not appear under the IT organization part of the ledger. Manage Workloads and Automate Workflows are primarily focused on OpEx, especially by reducing the labor required for the management of the IT infrastructure. Optimize Delivery is primarily focused on business agility and tight alignment of IT resources with Business imperatives. As you move thru these different priorities or stages, the emphasis moves from IT efficiency (Consolidate) to business effectiveness (Optimize)
