It has become more popular due to increased broadband access, affordable videoconferencing software, and its estimated $48 billion global market. The benefits of online learning include decreased costs, increased portability and availability of courses, ability to use mobile devices, ability to increase class sizes by combining online and in-person students, and ability to recruit students globally.
Hacking the Faculty: Bringing Content Discovery Into Online Course Development

Original Proposal/Abstract: Discovering resources is easier than ever, yet barriers remain for faculty trying to embed quality content into online courses. Course development tools are silo-ed away from content discovery systems, so faculty must leave the Learning Management System (LMS) to seek articles and e-books, then navigate back to the LMS to paste the link. They need to know how to identify persistent URLs and how to enable off-campus access. The process is tedious and fraught with pitfalls. At the University of Central Florida, the Library and the Center for Distributed Learning collaborated to integrate content discovery and selection seamlessly into course creation. The result, dubbed Library Tool, is presented as a simple icon in the LMS on the page-creation form. Library Tool opens a simple search form which returns a results list of full text articles. Faculty can add any article to their page with a single click. The Tool leverages the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standards and EBSCO's API, which can be easily adapted by other institutions. The presenters will demonstrate the Library Tool in action and briefly describe the development process as well as an overview of the LTI standard and the EDS API. Finally, we will share preliminary usage and faculty response and will discuss options for future developments.

It oversees instructional design, technology support, testing, media production, and student services. ODL works with academic departments to develop online programs and courses. It assists with marketing, curriculum approvals, budgets, and production. ODL also manages a testing center that has expanded from 96 to 260 stations to accommodate increased demand for proctored exams from distance students. Overall, distance learning enrollment and revenue at FSU has grown substantially in recent years.

Abstract: In the last decade the way knowledge is organized and made available has been radically altered. Users are witnessing the emergence of the new services, tools and technologies known as Web 2.0 environment. The significant attributes and features of these new tools relate to knowledge creation, management, sharing and dissemination causing the appearance of anomalies in the information literacy paradigm. Fact is that many of the aspects of current information literacy practices originate from a print-based culture which is incongruent with the transient and hybrid nature of digital environments. The authors examine the grounds for the possible re-conceptualizations in the field of information literacy and identify the current developments in the information universe.

This is my presentation for the Wiki Education Programme panel at the 11th annual Wikimania conference in Mexico City. The presentation was to be delivered on 17 July 2015.
Here I share some of the discovered pitfalls and protocols of the wiki education programme in Bulgaria, as well as some tried and tested local teaching experiences.

Abstract: In the last decade the way knowledge is organized and made available has been radically altered. Users are witnessing the emergence of the new services, tools and technologies known as Web 2.0 environment. The significant attributes and features of these new tools relate to knowledge creation, management, sharing and dissemination causing the appearance of anomalies in the information literacy paradigm. Fact is that many of the aspects of current information literacy practices originate from a print-based culture which is incongruent with the transient and hybrid nature of digital environments. The authors examine the grounds for the possible re-conceptualizations in the field of information literacy and identify the current developments in the information universe.

Virtual learning spaces: example of international collaboration
This document discusses two examples of virtual learning spaces created through international collaboration:
1) The Omega virtual learning space at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences which uses Moodle and has over 4,850 students and 600 courses. Popular features include uploading resources, assignments, forums, and quizzes.
2) The BISER virtual learning space at the University of Sarajevo's Faculty of Philosophy which also uses Moodle and has over 140 students, 19 teachers, and 30 courses. The most used modules are resources, forums, and assignments.

School librarians coping with electronic environment
The document discusses the evolution of the web from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and the concept of Library 2.0 as a reaction to developments in information and communication technologies. Social networks and libraries
This document discusses research into Croatian libraries' use of Facebook. It finds that over 94 Croatian libraries have a Facebook presence, with the majority (55%) being public libraries. Most libraries have an open profile or page. The content analysis found that libraries mostly post about activities and links but have low user engagement as shown by few comments and likes. The conclusion is that while the number of library Facebook presences is large, there seems to be a lack of strategy and understanding of how to best create an engaging social media presence.

Globalization through the mediation of information and communication technologies influences greatly higher education (appearing transnational education, great amount of alternative providers of higher education and runaway staff mobility in virtual space). Virtual mobility attracts attention of politicians and experts in the field of education (“The Bologna Process and the European Higher Education Area” – Salamanca Convention, 2001, includes an idea of joint European approach to virtual mobility and transnational education; “Mobility for Better Learning” – Mobility strategy 2020 for the European Higher Education Area, 2011) and scientists (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine project “International Education on the Basis of Flexible Centers of Distance Technologies and Computer-Tele-Communicational Networks”). Problem of mobility is one of the most disputable among higher education researchers in Europe. Development of virtual academic mobility transforms modern education into a social institution which could provide different educational services to humans for their lifelong learning. Modern situation demands attention to distance education development through creation of specialized informationaleducational courses and areas of e-learning, development of e-libraries and databases, support of “network lecturers” and e-courses developers. It should stimulate university staff media-educational training they could project educational environment using modern information technologies. Our task was to investigate Ukrainian academicians’ experience and e-competences necessary for participation in virtual mobility processes (sample – 710). The instruments of measurement and diagnostics were a specially constructed questionnaire and a method of self-evaluation of ecompetences necessary for effective participation in virtual academic mobility.Conole Japan
Gráinne Conole presented a holistic, student-centered approach to learning design using new technologies. She discussed how technologies are changing the learning landscape and learner expectations. Conole proposed learning design as a conceptual framework and tools like CompendiumLD and Cloudworks to help educators design for learning and share ideas. Her vision emphasizes flexible, experiential learning that blurs boundaries between formal and informal learning through open educational resources and new digital spaces.
Liberal arts online
This document discusses the use of technology in liberal arts education. It explores previous experiments with distance education and online learning. It also examines new opportunities for collaboration between institutions using technologies like high-definition videoconferencing. Case studies show how schools are partnering on shared courses and global programs. "InterMeCo" for Croatian Medical Schools

The Impact of MOOC in Higher Education
With the rapid development of information technologies and the spread of the Internet, universities have been able to extend their learning environments using technology all over their campuses. Numerous universities have implemented OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiatives and OER(Open Educational Resources) development to share their learning materials on the web. In addition, some universities provide free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with large-scale interactive participation and open access on the Internet. This keynote evaluates the status of the Open Education movement and its dissemination in higher education. It reviews the growth of MOOC movement, activities of MOOC providers and consortiums, introduction MOOC to university education as well as the possible impact on higher education. In addition, this keynote introduces current open educational practices in Hokkaido region, utilizing OER across campuses to improve student outcomes.
e-learning: a catalyst for academic excellence
