Video on demand (VOD) allows users to select and watch video programs on their own schedule. VOD systems use either satellite or wide geographic networks and include a video server storing video content. Users can request videos using their TV receiver and set-top box, and the video server then streams the selected content. VOD first launched in 1990 and grew with increased bandwidth availability, finding applications in education, video conferencing, and streaming films, games, music and local news on demand.
