Victorian poetry was written during Queen Victoria's reign from 1837 to 1901. While some romantic elements continued, Victorian poetry was generally less subjective and more realistic, discussing social issues like child labor, women's rights, science, and religion. Poets frequently used imagery, allusions to history and mythology, and poetic forms like the dramatic monologue and elegy. Victorian poetry often explored doubts and psychological conflicts that emerged during rapid industrialization, when many moved from rural areas to dirty, unhealthy cities with rising poverty and disease.
