Description
 Victorian was the first English monarch to see her name
given to the period of her reign whilst still living.
 The 19 century was associated with protestant work
ethics, family values and religious observation.
 It was characterised by rapid change and developments
in nearly every sphere.
 The industrialisation and gender from women’s work
make the influence by the prevalence.
 The scientific progress led significant changes in
medicine, increasing the specialisation and
developments in surgery and hospital buildings
Victorian era and Role of
Woman
 Low down the social scale, and the prevalence of
lodgers
 They could not vote, sue, or own property, they were
seen as pure and clean
 The role of women was to have children and tend to the
house
 Prostitution on Victorian Era was considered indignity
for that women
Characteristics
 In the Victorian Era had:
 Similar rights like the children rights in the time
 They had take care about their husband, and they were considered properties
from their husband
 They were also obligated to take care of her parents in case of illness sacrificing
their self-interest on her side
 They were supposed to obey their husband, and they were considered by the
stereotypes of society like angels
 High Class
 They have the advantages from wear expensive cosmetics, clothes.
 The attitude education for women just were only in the classical and commercial .
 The high class women did very little or almost no home chores
 Medium Class
 Women of the middle class depended heavily on marrying “up” into the upper
classes, therefore gaining social prestige as well as a great deal more worldly goods.
 Their lands were not so extensive nor their way of life so grand as that of the
aristocracy and landed gentry
 Lower Class
 The women of lower class worked in the factories, garment, industries, laundries or
various other jobs to support themselves.
 They were just domestic servants supposed to work seven days a week and twelve
hours a day.
 They were the upper class in found positions like shops, as bookkeepers or teachers
Dis-advantages
 Woman who wanted to study such subjects as law, physics, engineering, science or
art were satirized and dismissed
 Obedience was all that required of them, where in Victorian Era was a period of
wide extremes.
 The industrial reforms, cultural transformations, scientific progress, gracious living
and grinding poverty and wars.
 The young ladies were groomed thoroughly to get married and had to be innocent,
virtuous, biddable and dutiful.
 Working women shouldered the double burden of waged work and the bulk of
household responsabilities.
