Verbal communication uses spoken language to convey messages and information through sounds, words, phrases and sentences. The study of language is called linguistics. There are five basic features of language: phonology studies the sound system; semantics examines word meanings; morphology analyzes word formation; syntax looks at grammatical rules for combining words; and pragmatics considers how context impacts language interpretation.
