This document discusses thin film coatings and their characterization using variable angle reflectance and transmittance measurements. It introduces thin film coatings that are used in consumer products to provide protective, moisture-blocking, or anti-reflective functions. Thin film thicknesses can range from 10 nm to 150 nm. The document then describes how two Shimadzu spectrophotometers equipped with accessories allow measuring transmission and reflection of thin film samples at various angles of incidence, characterizing the effect of film thickness. Transmission and reflection spectra are presented for four samples measured using the two instruments. Both instruments provide suitable characterization of thin films for research and production.
