Why use STEM?
“STEM education is a contemporary approach
that aims to use integrative approach while
educating individuals and teaching them the
necessary skills in daily life and scientific
process that can meet the needs by equipping
them with 21st-century skills” (Yildirim, 2016,
as cited in Karaşah-Çakici et al., 2021, p. 267).

“Structured use of cross-curricular academic
teams can lead to improved integration of
subject matter and to deeper understanding
of content and pedagogy related to state
standards” (Reed & Growth, 2009, p. 17).

Editor's Notes

  1. STEM is comprised of science, technology, engineering and math. This means that teaching STEM allows for students to learn different skills to use in school but in their everyday lives as well. The students apply 21st Century skills to real world scenarios to show their critical thinking skills and how well they can adapt what they have learned in the past to the problem they are solving.
  2. STEM utilizes standards from multiple subject areas that reinforce what the students are learning in other classes. Getting teachers to collaborate on a topic or unit allows students to see how that one topic can be looked at from different subject views.
  3. Cross-curricular learning allows for students to gain a deeper understanding of the lessons they are taught. Students can apply what they learn in one class into another. This reinforces the different subject areas and supports students understanding of the lesson if done properly. Students need to see the link between both subjects and how one can affect the other.
  4. An example of cross curricular topics is coding. Coding relies on students using their critical thinking skills, understanding how to plot points and/or shapes, variables and basic math skills such as adding or subtracting. This also allows students to apply their artistic and musical skills to some of their projects as well. At the end, the students can reflect on what they learned.
