This document provides information on why educators should join the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). ISTE offers many benefits for teachers including access to educational technology resources like podcasts and publications, networking opportunities, and discounted registration for the annual ISTE conference. The 2019 conference in Philadelphia featured sessions on engaging students with technology, cultivating diversity, and using assistive technology and coding to support students with special needs. Joining a professional organization like ISTE allows educators to gain knowledge, collaborate with others, and improve technology integration skills to become more effective teachers.

Objective: A position in educational technology where I can create an energized learning environment that is conducive to the academic, ethical, and social grow of each individual student and the learning community.
The document discusses participatory approaches to learning with digital technologies. It describes different levels of participation in design from children and teachers providing input as "native informants" to equal stakeholder roles in co-design. Key aspects of changing educational paradigms are also summarized, including personalization, learner voice, use of new technologies, and links to informal learning. Examples of participatory projects involving co-design with users are provided.
Educational technology aims to improve education by making course materials easily accessible to students and motivating learning. It allows for broader participation through distance learning and helps students improve their writing skills. Different types of educational software have been designed to help students learn specific subjects easier. A methodology course evaluates educational technology through student presentations using various technologies, reading assessments, article discussions, teaching demonstrations using technology, and a final essay analyzing technology use in education. Research shows the importance of understanding teachers' and students' experiences with technology and training teachers to use technology for educational purposes rather than just computer skills.

In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

Editor's Notes
Professional organizations offer their members many different resources to offset the high membership fees. The resources that are contained within these organizations are written by experts in their fields and contain valuable insight that will not be found other places. Journal articles, magazines and books written be respected authors can be expected to be included in the membership fees or available at a discount (Dush, 2016). Because the professional organizations have expert members, discussions can often lead to new research ideas. “Consuming the latest research at conferences can help you identify exciting trends coming in the field before they even appear in the journal” (par. 7). Meeting other members also allows for networking which can help one find a job, advance their career, or simply meet other educators who are interested in the same niches. Educators looking to fund higher education, special projects, or enter themselves or a colleague for recognition will benefit from access to information on scholarships, grants, fellowships, and awards. Finally, those looking to develop their leadership skills will gain prospects from professional organizations. ISTE offers several different forms of valuable resources to its members.
ISTE offers several podcasts to its members. YourEd Tech Questions is a podcast that answers questions related to educational technology (ISTE, 2020). Teachers can expect to gain insight on new technological resources available to them. This podcast will provide educators with vital information on implementation of new and upcoming technological tools and how to best use them to benefit students. Teachers of students of all grade levels, backgrounds, and abilities will find this podcast useful and full of valuable information.
ISTE offers two educational journals related to technology. The Journal of Research on Technology in Education is a free resource for premium members of ISTE and can be purchased by other tiers of membership. Teachers can find “original research, project descriptions/evaluations, syntheses of the literature, assessments of the state of the art, and theoretical or conceptual positions that relate to the field of educational technology in teaching and learning and inform P-16 school-based practice” (ISTE, 2020). Teachers are able to locate and familiarize themselves with the most current practices in education related to technology which will allow them serve students with the most up to date services. This resource states that is beneficial to teachers of preschool students through those teaching higher education. All students will benefit from an educator who is privy to information on best practices.
There are several books listed in the ISTE website that have been written by field experts. The book Awesome Sauce was written in a simplistic manner as an easy to apply approach of technology integration in the classroom. The book explains how to make videos to address many different situations that may arise, from explaining directions to addressing parents. Chapter Five of this text specifically addresses differentiation and how to use videos to curate lessons for learners with different abilities and needs. This book provides a fun and charming method of technology integration that would engage students and parents alike. Elementary aged students would benefit the most from the video integration suggested. Diverse student populations would find this type of video integration helpful and would meet various needs they have within the classroom.
The 2019 ISTE conference was held in Philadelphia. The main idea was that “Bold Educators Activate Change” (ISTE, 2020). Some of the speakers at the conference were Danielle Feinberg, Pixar’s director of photography for lighting, Kasey Bell, an award winning digital learning coach, Sady Pauslon, film director and editor with cerebral palsy who uses assistive technology on a daily basis and Pedro Rivera, the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education. The conference sessions were organized by content into themes which were listen and learn, engage and connect, explore and create, and participate and share. Three sessions have been highlighted for their content.
Amp It Up: Empower Student Engagement was an explore and create session. This session provided information on how to actively engage students and to increase teacher confidence. This session was for all educators of any grade level PK-12. It covered two ISTE standards for students the “Empowered Learner: Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes and the Knowledge Constructor: Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions”(ISTE, 2020). Piquing the interest of students is one of the first battles in engrossing them in the lesson. This session provided useful insight on how to successfully accomplish this goal.
A Seat at the Table: Tips on Cultivating a More Diverse Culture was a listen and learn panel discussion. This session was meant for all educators of all grade levels. The purpose of this panel discussion was to “discuss how to cultivate a more diverse culture in practical ways with a stellar panel” (ISTE, 2020). Understanding, appreciating, and integrating diverse cultures into the classroom is a crucial part of education. Students are increasingly diverse and allowing them to all feel included and valued within their schooling is necessary. ISTE standards for educators and education leaders were covered during this session and included: “Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders. Empower educators to exercise professional agency, build teacher leadership skills and pursue personalized professional learning. Inspire a culture of innovation and collaboration that allows the time and space to explore and experiment with digital tools” (ISTE, 2020).
Pi for Everybody: Assistive Technology + Coding for Students With Special Needs was a listen and learn lecture. This lecture was put on by the New Jersey Assistive Technology Act Project and the Asbury School District. Their partnership created Raspberry Pi Assistive Technology which developed a coding program for students with special needs. The lecture was geared towards library media specialists, technology coordinators and coaches. This type of program would benefit students of all school-ages. This lecture would have been useful to learn new ways to meet the needs of students while also providing them with fun and empowering tools. This session accomplished three of the ISTE standards for educators and students. “Students use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints. Educators ensure all students have access to the technology and connectivity necessary to participate in authentic and engaging learning opportunities. Educational leaders advocate for equitable access to educational technology, digital content and learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students” (ISTE, 2020).
“Teaching is a complex combination of what teachers know about the content they teach, how they decide to teach that content, and the tools they use to carry out their plans” (Roblyer & Hughes, 2019, p.17). Joining a professional organization provides resources, establishes standards and allows educators to collaborate on important topics. Joining a professional educational organization, such as ISTE, will elevate the profession of teaching. Educators can hone skills and share ideas when brought together. These organizations provide a great opportunity for improvement in a variety of areas. You should consider joining ISTE or another professional organization today.
