GIS systems enable the electronic management of spatial data and facilitate its visualisation; they are specialised forms of information systems that are conceived solely for use with spatial data. Their purpose is the collection, modelling, storage, manipulation, analysis, retrieval and presentation of geodata. During the Smart Cities Project we examined the geobased services that were being used by the project’s six municipal partners. This guide provides a detailed review of the systems that are being used by two of these partners – the City of Edinburgh Council in Scotland, and Kristiansand Kommune in Norway – who had the most advanced geobased infrastructures in the Smart Cities partnership.
In preparation of the Dubai Rail Master Plan, GIS provided comprehensive mapping and was used for analysis. The GIS developed became integral to the planners, designers and developers assessing future demands of the Dubai Metro. Additionally, methods were developed to create and evaluate scenario based land use plans and socioeconomic projections to accommodate new growth in a more compact and less auto-dependent manner.

Development of a Survey 123 mobile inspection platform that would update an existing inventory of Permanent Water Quality control measures was vital to the compliance requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Developing the application will reduce compliance risk and increase efficiency. Utilizing form-based ESRI Survey 123 software for the mobile app development integrated with planned use of SpikeTM smart laser measurement solution lends itself well to geolocation-based solution with area measurements useful for CDOT needs.
As an industry we need to do a better job of making sense of our dynamically changing world by combining sensors, with software focused on providing solutions that work together to solve the challenges we meet today.

One of the biggest challenges information security leaders have is being able to effectively communicate the value of their team’s efforts across the organization .Here the ability to accurately report on their organization’s state of security and communicate the benefits of a proactive security effort in a language the rest of the organization can understand. This session will draw from the experience of seasoned CISOs with proven track records in enabling core business objectives by influencing key stakeholders in the organization. These risk and information security leaders will share their advice on how to effectively create and demonstrate security’s value. The security function is often seen as doing security for its own sake, rather than for the benefit of the business, and so misses the point of security entirely which is about managing risk to acceptable levels.
The security function all too often acts in a condescending manner thinking it knows what is best for the business when in fact it is just one of the various functions in which they have the organizations for business decisions. Business executives are far more interested in what is happening with information security than ever, thanks to a plethora of high-profile, very visible breaches and security incidents.
In recent years the level of attention paid to cybersecurity issues by organizations has skyrocketed. Cyber risk is now a board-level concern, and IT security budgets have risen accordingly. Despite the increased attention, it is not clear whether firms have become more sophisticated in how they manage cyber risks. Historically, most firms have made cybersecurity investment decisions by adhering to industry best practices, without necessarily developing a detailed understanding of their overall cyber risk first. Risk management is predicated on risk quantification, and many researchers have attempted to quantify cyber risks using quantitative metrics such as return on investment.

Schneider’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) e-government solutions change the very nature of how citizens interact with local governments, improving constituent service while lowering costs. Our innovative approach allows Schneider to serve as the GIS/IT service provider for hundreds of local governments across the country.
In 2013, The Schneider Corporation saved tax payers over 11 million trips to the courthouse by providing innovative, industry-leading solutions to help organizations get the most from their limited resources. With creative product solutions such as Beacon™ a typical, local government client can save on average over $150,000 each year in employee benefits from reduced counter traffic. The estimated financial impact of Schneider’s e-government solutions reach into the tens of millions of dollars each year.
I was amazed at how quickly they were able to get my info on the web; and within days, the phone calls and traffic at my window dropped by 70%. We had about 400 appeals the year before Schneider. The following year after we implemented our Schneider website we had less than 20 appeals. – Dan Whitman, Martin County, MN.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

The Citizen Input Form was designed to facilitate input from Beech Grove citizens to City administrators and staff. This form allows anyone to report incidents like missing street signs or potholes and have that report routed directly to the appropriate City department. The form allows users to first select a point of interest on the map and then fill out the form with the appropriate information to be submitted. The following are step by step instructions for submitting citizen input: Select the Citizen Input layer. (If the Citizen Input layer is not already selected.) Select the map tab to switch to the map view. (Located on the tab bar immediately below the page header.) Zoom to the location of interest using the map navigation tools. Select the location tool by clicking on the icon. (The tool's background will change to indicate it has been selected.) Click a point on the map to indicate area of interest. (The application will then redirect the user to the input form.) Fill out the form with the appropriate data. Press the submit button. (You will recieve confirmation that your submission was successful.)

The traditional method is little better than throwing a dart at a map. That’s pretty much how they picked the locations of the future fire stations in the maps below, but the software can also help find more suitable locations. In fact, you could probably throw that into the Return on Investment section.
The roads that are not included in the trial can be modeled for drive time based on the posted speed limit and the segment length. Adjustments can and should be made to account for the acceleration/deceleration time associated with turns and negotiating traffic at intersections. The ArcGIS Network Analyst Extension uses these drive times as input to produce a drive time model for the entire centerline dataset. In the graphic below, the impedance is set to Drivetime (Seconds). This tells the software that traveling along a road segment has a “cost”, or the time it takes to travel the segment. We can also set restrictions to movement along segments such as Oneway restrictions or road closures.
Once the road network is built, you can perform 4 basic types of analysis: Service Area, Route, Closest Facility, and OD Cost Matrix. The only one we really didn’t use for Fishers is the Route Analysis.
The decision is still up in the air, but the Chief is pushing for the 3 station solution as well as an additional single-engine station in the northwest to cover that area more effectively. Route This is basically used for route planning to multiple destinations (such as in package delivery). Since fire response doesn’t really work that way, we didn’t utilize Route Analysis. Closest Facility In terms of fire response analysis, this set of tools allows the user to assess the nature and time of response on a per incident basis. You can use real or hypothetical incidents and facilities to determine which facilities can best respond. This is great for on-the-fly demonstrations of how changes in the number and placement of fire stations can affect fire response (to individual commissioners’ houses, even). Below is an example from Fishers. The purple box is a hypothetical fire incident. We told the tool to show the three closest facilities, the routes they would take to get to the incident, and how long it would take for them to arrive once they left the facility.
OD Cost Matrix The “OD” stands for “Origin-Destination.” It works much like the Closest Facility tools, but can handle multiple incidents and does not provide routing. It does, however, provide drive times from each facility (yellow) to each incident (magenta…or is that fuscia?). This tool can be used to help place fire stations based on collective response times to multiple incidents.
some maps to depict the suitability of areas in the eastern part of town based on drive time. They were also considering a redraw of their station service zones based on the 5 minute drive time boundaries, but the analysis produced polygons that matched so closely with their existing zones that they decided not to J. Currently working on modeling drive times for a couple of other stations in Marion Co just south of Fishers. The folks in Geist who are resisting annexation are arguing that the two Lawrence Twp stations will largely cover them. Based on what I’m seeing, they’re not.
